my favorite pokemon is persian, I happened upon a dark persian card about a week ago and it’s kickstarted my journey to collecting both A. all of the persian cards and B. all of the dark pokemon cards

Pick one specific set, buy some trainer boxes, and boosters. Finish buying the individual cards you need. Two of every card has a battling rational too.
4:40 these are lessons everybody needs to learn. My dad always tells me to do stuff around the house myself to save money (like renovations etc). But I work in IT, I literally lose money doing these jobs when I can just work instead and pay someone to do it.
I recently started collecting again after a 20+ year hiatus where I only played the games. I just want to collect all of the versions of my favorite Pokemon that I think look cool 🙂 buying singles makes life so easy! I'm collecting Japanese Art Rares (not SARs though). Awesome art at an awesome price (except for that dang magikarp). I intend on getting every AR as I think it would look so awesome in a binder just seeing the fantastic art one after the other. I just love the little stories that are told from the art e.g. AR kricketune on a park bench playing a song and all the other Pokémon gathered round listening. Simply awesome imo. Great video.
I like the art. Also, the nostalgia hits hard for me and takes me back to a really great time in my childhood when we all came together with our cards to enjoy not just the collection, but each other’s company.
I started collecting this year and think that I have been very successful on keeping my collection in line with what my goal is. (personal) Mostly graded cards in a PSA 9 (because I dont want to look at japanese vintage cards and guess their condition.) with the old JP cardback and also cards from different Eraswith Dragonite, Tyranitar , Three 1st gen starter, E-cards in Japanese and some english alt arts (mostly promos). It was very overwhelming in the beginning as you exactly pointed out how one should set a goal for collecting. It is very important to stick to that or set a goal from the beginning bc I also had some growing pains with my collection. I bought slabs and cards I didn't care for just because I had an opportunity, which I had to sell or trade at a loss later on. While this hobby has a lot of great people it also has a lot of terrible people, who want your best, your money. Setting a goal personally and showing discipline is the most important rule for sticking to this hobby long term imo. As a result I dont give a fk about hype about new products orbc thats the easiest way to "lose" money.
Wow I just need to say thank you! This was quite relieving to me as someone who just opened a few packs in a McDondalds this weekend and have had questions on my mind like: "Do people make money from this", "What set should I buy", "What should I collect". Its really nice that you addressed many of these questions and urge us to ask ourselves important questions about why we are doing it. That way we are not wasting time or disappointed if things don't work out.
My recent journey back into Pokemon is pretty funny I think: Picked up a set of 4 random packs for the first time since 2014 > pull an SIR from Paradox Rift > buy a few more PF packs > sister buys me a PF booster box for Christmas instead of the few packs I asked for (ty btw) > get myself another booster box > now 75% done with the Master Set so just gonna buy the singles to finish it out. Weird how life works :)
I came back to my pokemon collection and i'm actually trying to collect every slowpoke, slowbro and slowking, some of them are pretty rare but not really that pricey, i also started making spreadsheets to keep an eye on which one are gonna be hard to find, pricey or the ones that i need to chase early if i want to make sure that i get them. Also i want to say that for me collecting pokemon cards should be a good time after all, just do whatever that will make you happy, of course some of the collections are more frustrating than others i will say but at the end the day if it's what motivates you and makes you happy then do it
I think one of the best approaches for those who don’t know where to start, is to come up with a collection identity (similar to goal). Creating an identity around your collection or even yourself can help you focus on your collecting goal and build a unique collection. Similar to Maxmaxcity that dude lives and breathes Bandai. This explains why there is so much diversity in the community - it really is more complex than collectors vs investors. And important for us to reflect on which activities bring us joy rather than collecting broadly and blindly. Great analysis, as always!
for me its all about the cards drawn by ken sugimori. even though my first holo was a base set charizard i pulled myself from a pack when i was about 10 (and i still have). i set a goal for myself, from the hundreds of cards sugimori drew, and then i picked the holos and non holos i like the most, and i'm happy to report that i'm basically 2/3 of the way from completing the list i created for it. with most of the expensive cards taken care of such as cd promo charizard, blaine's charizard, the blastoise cd promo, and the black star promo venusaur from the english card guide. of course, the grail for my collection would be the parent-and-child trophy card kangaskhan, but they're sooooo hard to see, so i've just kept it on my peripheral view whilst i collect the other cards on the list. i havent bought more than 10 booster packs in the last 5 years, because my budget wouldn't have liked it, as you say in the video. i've just kept steadily buying those singles i want for the collection and it's been working out great.
Base Set for short term since all I need to get is some non-holo cards there. But in terms of passion, the Delta Species reverses I been picking up for a few years now everytime I saw one in the wild. The reverses back then were sometimes better than the rare slot and I miss it.
I mostly aim to get cards of the Pokemon I like that have good art. Already spent a bit of money on singles for that. But I also just like opening booster packs from time to time because opening them is just a fun time in general. I hardly ever remember what the full set of cards for an expansion is and I like seeing what I can possibly pull.
I'm looking back at my vintage cards (that feel like an old friend) I want to organize and fill any holes in my collection. I know I have a whole set of Base but it's outta order.
I never really got into this, as a kid I got some but I was more of an MTG player and those cards are more tied to their use in the game. If I had to choose a goal for pokemon it would be the Yuka Morii cards probably.
I’m a species collector for pretty much all the main favorites you could think of, I collect Blastoise Aggron and Tentacruel cards cuz they’re my top 3 favorite, I collect cardass and vintage sticker cards with nice art, and pretty much anything vintage I even have a lot of the early episodes on vhs.
As a kid I completed the original 151 Pokedex (without any rules or guidelines). I got back into collecting in 2018 and started goal to collect the Pokedex; first appearance / main expansion / unlimited / english. And master set base, jungle and fossil. It's cool how many different collection goal variations there can be. Really great video
I usually take a look at the card list and try to pull for any card I like that has my favorite pokemon, the rest is just a bonus to my collection and the duplicates go to my co-worker's grandkids
When I was younger I had the complete set of base jungle and fossil before I quit playing Pokemon I had so much fun completing those sets back in 99 00
I wanted the full set as a child back in 1999, might as well complete the set since it does not seem to be very expensive if I avoid the top dollar stuff.
I'm new to card collecting and my goal is definitely a personal one, I'm an artist and a pokemon fan since 2001 so I want to collect some of my fav AR and SAR throughout the years and specifically those that have my fav pokemon in them because I have an appreciation for the art itself. I have a list of about 50 cards that I want and would buy or trade for them but I do understand the fun in opening packs every now and then in hopes I would pull the card I want, that's a magical feeling.

Merry Christmas, really good video! I recently got back into the TCG after not collecting since 2000. It’s rather overwhelming when each set comes out and you feel the need to collect them or buy a load of packs to get the chase cards. I bought a lot of 151 but still need the majority of the expensive cards. I don’t want to spend 000’s finishing it. I’m going to go after putting a collection together of my two favourite Pokemon, Eevee and Zapdos.

I’ve started collecting recently and plan on completing the master set of the base set. Fortunately, I was given my cousins old binder many years ago which included various cards from the Original, Gym & Neo series. I only need 29 more cards in the base set, so I will slowly fill in the gaps. Maybe once I’m done, I will see what I’m missing in the other sets 🤷♂️ Enjoy the festive period 🎉
I sort of blend themes and specific pokemon. For example I like pikachu trainer cards/Red's pikachu but not just plain pikachu because it reminds me of watching the anime growing up and provides an emotional connection. I try to get eeveelutions. Also, I'm going to be making a collection based on what my pokemon team was for each of the video games. I'm also contemplating what I want to do about 151 which I find to be an awesome set, with so many great card arts.
Im close to a master crown zenith set with the full galarian gallery. I also focus on IRs and SIRs that i love the artwork of. My binders look like little art galleries! I may also begin focusing on a select few of my favorite pokemon.
My collecting goal for the next year is to build English language versions of the nine Generations Start Decks that came out in Japan last month. I adore the idea of having a set of decks to represent the nine eras of Pokémon so far, and I'm hoping that building these will allow me to have an easy way to onboard friends and family into the card game.
I'm trying to collect every Tsareena card! There are a few other favorites I'm lowkey collecting with the end goal of eventually getting every one, but Tsareena is my favorite and my focus. I have every one except the Play Pokemon cards, which are far harder to find in person. I might have to eventually cave and TCGPlayer them, but I've enjoyed hunting the others in the meantime!
I'm in this weird spot where at first I just wanted to finish my childhood Pokedex binder, but now I've seen the new ( to me ) illustration rares and my gosh they're so pretty! I want those! There's so many though, and scattered across all the expansions, so I rip a few random boosters and get nothing. I start buying more of the same kind of booster, and now I've got all this bulk (and still no art rares), I may as well dabble in a master set as well 😂😂 it's such a rabbit hole, I've only been back in the hobby for a few months

I’m finishing my Sword & Shield Master set currently (have 17 regular cards and 63 Reverse Holos to go), the one set I’d gotten into enough some years back that I feel I should finish, plus all Togekiss cards. Nothing like collecting every card of one’s favourite mon! Especially if it’s one that never got huge favour from TPCi or fans, so there isn’t that many and they’re not dear at all. Attached the matching Togepi/Togetic cards for each set Togekiss comes from as well, to complete the evolutionary family and because they’re a cheap, small edition. Stretch goals include, in order: * Togepi and Togetic cards from Gens 2/3 (not a cheap proposition, hence having it separate). * Upgrading the Sword & Shield set to a Grandmaster by getting all the other variants (except Jumbos, primarily because there are signed Zacian and Zamazenta ones that only had 20 made - I’m nowhere near that bullish). * Reprints of Sword & Shield cards in other sets in the Gen 8 block. Debatable whether this falls under Grandmaster, but I have it mapped out in case I close in on finishing the Other Variants enough to consider it.
I love the idea of chase cards but I’m fully aware I love gambling and don’t let it control me, I’m just starting collecting and I’ve spent a fair amount in the last month but I’m doing it with the intention to play so I’m building a collection to build decks to enter tournaments but I am collecting a master set of Shrouded Fable for the fun of it because most of the SIRs and stuff aren’t expensive. I even pulled the Cassiopeia within 15 packs so it’s going well to get it all fairly cheap
right now, im collecting every card of exeggcute. i find it super appealing to have so many arts of the same pokemon. I chose to start with exeggcute because its affordable compared to my other faves (mew 😔💸💸) and its much more interesting than a pokemon from a newer gen because i get to collect cards from so many eras. i also love that this collecting style allows me to appreciate even common cards, like my favorite card from my collection is a common aquapolis exeggcute. great video btw! it really helped me think about my pokemon goals for the long term
I have 2 goals at the moment. Aaaaaand maybe a 3rd. Main goal is every single Eeevee card in English. I'm about 80% done. Then will continue onto every 9ther Eeveelution. 3rd is every SwSh set card. Incousing the regular promos. Might be too large but i gave them tiers so I had fall back cards to look for when i couldnt find what i wanted
Personally, i point myself towards a personal and money goal. I am 13 years old. I don't have a job so i have to make money in other ways such as stocks and pokemon investments. To my surprise, i have been able to get some sealed product that has skyrocketed in recent months such as a fusion strike bb and a mew upc as my christmas gift. After I pulled a bubble mew from a tin, I realized what my goal in pokemon collecting was, to obtain every single mew card. Obviously, that goal as of now is very unrealistic, so that's why I am using pokemon as a money source. I love this hobby and I hope I can stay here forever.
I'm so lucky to have started my collections in 2017. Bought master sets of base, jungle, fossil and genesis for around 300$ all together. Now working on the rest of neo. Discovery getting close. ❤
I just started collecting again, my goal is to matter set all the new scarlet and violet sets from cheapest to expensive. My plan is to just buy the the dollar amount of the chase card in booster packs. And then buying singles from there.
When it comes to buying, I usually buy the products which have nice promo cards and open the included packs for the thrill of ripping. I buy sealed products (displays) for profit and the singles I really like or which I feel are undervalued for my collection. Also I am slowly completing the SWSH TG and GG subsets as they really have beautiful but affordable cards.
My goal is to collect Eeveelution cards. I started my collection in 2010 and my first card was Umbreon Prime, now I have more than 480 different Eeveelution cards.
I just got the urge to collect again. Learned 151 was a thing that I missed out on. Went on a wild journey to every retailer and card shop in my area and couldn't fined any. Called one random shop and the guy said he had the premium collection in stock because he forgot he had it.
I Collect every version of Decidueye and Haxorus in English and Japanese. I have Pokedex collections based of different games from different generations of cards. I collect decks to play with my Brother and friends and open packs with them for fun. Sell what I don't need along to way to help complete the others.
Collecting full evo lines of my favs - going for all English cards of each species and reverse holo/1st ed if possible. Got all Porygon and almost all Porygon-Z but Porygon2 has a lot of hard to find and expensive 2001-2005 cards; same with the Magnemite line and Magneton. Gen 5 and 6 mons have been a lot easier to complete provided they aren't legendaries; later gens have many EX/GX/V type cards and alternate art (Illustration/Rainbow/Gold etc)
I'm collecting Pokemon cards because of my dad. We did it together when they first released. They're nice memories I had of him and so my goal personal.
I'm just an old school collector I'm want to collect, but I know I'll have to do trades and resale of doubles.... I also am a person who sweats if I don't get everything however to me tye pack pulling is nostalgic and bring back old memories and I'm just greatful to relive the feeling expect loosing my old cards along the way so I'm fresh back after 20+ years
I wouldn’t say the gambling aspect has anything to do with ethics. Gambling on its own has nothing to do with ethics. i want as many lapras as possible. thats the goal that got me into the hobby just recently and Ive now found I actually enjoy playing the card game too. so i wanna build decks. maybe a lapras deck too idk. But my love for lapras is my main motivator.
Honestly as a (yet) minor collector I buy ETB like once per each year just to feel this nice spark of gambling. I started collecting pokemon cards, because I liked the Pokemon XY and XYZ series, especially pokemon Greninja and Zygarde, which arts I really like. Also I'm the type of guy which somehow feels connected emotionally to my cards (I don't want to sell or trade them). Budget is quite my problem, but ETB exists AND "scarlet & violet" expansion adds another booster pack to ETBs, and another reverse holo, and every rare card is holo (I wasn't born under 2000, but I'm minimalist - old cards "rainbow rare" or todays few extremely rare cards are too shiny and detailed for me, I prefer reverse holos, holos, full arts and these new art rares). Probably the only extension I want to 100% collect is pokemon detective pikachu and that's it. I'll probably just buy once per year an ETB (after getting job maybe a little more often, but not more than once per month). I just want to collect some cool cards of pokemon I like, like radiant greninja and shiny zygarde gx, etc. I don't treat it as an addiction, investment, main hobby or job - I treat it as a future memory, when I'll find and open my binder and say "hey, I remember when I bought this or when someone gave me this", even when it'll be just a normal holo.

I just started and my goal is to get one SIR or full art of every legendary (probably seems lame but budget and space are kinda tight. Especially due to the following side quest). Right now I'm trying to pull a full art Sylveon from terastal festival by myself since it's my favorite pokémon
In 1999 our six sons (now ages 25-36) and I started collecting mostly engrish Pokémon cards and placing them in binders. We did so because we already had an inkling about keeping our cards in az good condition az wuz possible back then but not with any other “goal” in mind. In the fall of 1999 I started a collection of all Pikachu cards in engrish along with a few Japanese Pikachu promo cards. 1999 also wuz the era when I started using eBay to purchase sealed Pikachu promo cards from Japanese sellers. So by spring of 2000 I had also completed the Base, Jungle & Fossil sets in engrish and Japanese because it wuz easy to purchase sealed Japanese booster boxes during deez early months. About 2015-16 I finally set the goal of obtaining ALL Pikachu cards in engrish and wuz already a massive collection. And in 2024 I have about 99% of the Pikachu cards printed in engrish including all reverse holos, jumbos, rares, promos, mini sets & cards tha feature Pikachu. It’s almost 2025 and now none of my sons want my collections! They don’t want “the hassle” of selling the cards regardless of the excellent condition of the cards My goals are stymied and I wonder wha to do next 🤔🤷🏽
That sounds incredible! Sounds like you have a lot in common with David Persin, whose kids also have no interest in his massive collection. It’s probably so overwhelming!

Wow I just need to say thank you! This was quite relieving to me as someone who just opened a few packs in a McDondalds this weekend and have had questions on my mind like: "Do people make money from this", "What set should I buy", "What should I collect". Its really nice that you addressed many of these questions and urge us to ask ourselves important questions about why we are doing it. That way we are not wasting time or disappointed if things don't work out.
My recent journey back into Pokemon is pretty funny I think:
Picked up a set of 4 random packs for the first time since 2014 > pull an SIR from Paradox Rift > buy a few more PF packs > sister buys me a PF booster box for Christmas instead of the few packs I asked for (ty btw) > get myself another booster box > now 75% done with the Master Set so just gonna buy the singles to finish it out. Weird how life works :)
I came back to my pokemon collection and i'm actually trying to collect every slowpoke, slowbro and slowking, some of them are pretty rare but not really that pricey, i also started making spreadsheets to keep an eye on which one are gonna be hard to find, pricey or the ones that i need to chase early if i want to make sure that i get them. Also i want to say that for me collecting pokemon cards should be a good time after all, just do whatever that will make you happy, of course some of the collections are more frustrating than others i will say but at the end the day if it's what motivates you and makes you happy then do it

I think one of the best approaches for those who don’t know where to start, is to come up with a collection identity (similar to goal). Creating an identity around your collection or even yourself can help you focus on your collecting goal and build a unique collection. Similar to Maxmaxcity that dude lives and breathes Bandai.

for me its all about the cards drawn by ken sugimori. even though my first holo was a base set charizard i pulled myself from a pack when i was about 10 (and i still have).
i set a goal for myself, from the hundreds of cards sugimori drew, and then i picked the holos and non holos i like the most, and i'm happy to report that i'm basically 2/3 of the way from completing the list i created for it. with most of the expensive cards taken care of such as cd promo charizard, blaine's charizard, the blastoise cd promo, and the black star promo venusaur from the english card guide. of course, the grail for my collection would be the parent-and-child trophy card kangaskhan, but they're sooooo hard to see, so i've just kept it on my peripheral view whilst i collect the other cards on the list.
i havent bought more than 10 booster packs in the last 5 years, because my budget wouldn't have liked it, as you say in the video. i've just kept steadily buying those singles i want for the collection and it's been working out great.
Smart! The cd promo Venusaur, Charizard, and Blastoise are a long my favourite cards ever.
Base Set for short term since all I need to get is some non-holo cards there. But in terms of passion, the Delta Species reverses I been picking up for a few years now everytime I saw one in the wild. The reverses back then were sometimes better than the rare slot and I miss it.
Man I have a soft spot for the Delta reverses. I have Espeon and it’s my baby

I mostly aim to get cards of the Pokemon I like that have good art. Already spent a bit of money on singles for that. But I also just like opening booster packs from time to time because opening them is just a fun time in general. I hardly ever remember what the full set of cards for an expansion is and I like seeing what I can possibly pull.

I'm looking back at my vintage cards (that feel like an old friend) I want to organize and fill any holes in my collection. I know I have a whole set of Base but it's outta order.
I never really got into this, as a kid I got some but I was more of an MTG player and those cards are more tied to their use in the game. If I had to choose a goal for pokemon it would be the Yuka Morii cards probably.
I’m a species collector for pretty much all the main favorites you could think of, I collect Blastoise Aggron and Tentacruel cards cuz they’re my top 3 favorite, I collect cardass and vintage sticker cards with nice art, and pretty much anything vintage I even have a lot of the early episodes on vhs.
As a kid I completed the original 151 Pokedex (without any rules or guidelines). I got back into collecting in 2018 and started goal to collect the Pokedex; first appearance / main expansion / unlimited / english. And master set base, jungle and fossil. It's cool how many different collection goal variations there can be. Really great video

I usually take a look at the card list and try to pull for any card I like that has my favorite pokemon, the rest is just a bonus to my collection and the duplicates go to my co-worker's grandkids

I wanted the full set as a child back in 1999, might as well complete the set since it does not seem to be very expensive if I avoid the top dollar stuff.
I'm new to card collecting and my goal is definitely a personal one, I'm an artist and a pokemon fan since 2001 so I want to collect some of my fav AR and SAR throughout the years and specifically those that have my fav pokemon in them because I have an appreciation for the art itself. I have a list of about 50 cards that I want and would buy or trade for them but I do understand the fun in opening packs every now and then in hopes I would pull the card I want, that's a magical feeling.

Merry Christmas, really good video! I recently got back into the TCG after not collecting since 2000. It’s rather overwhelming when each set comes out and you feel the need to collect them or buy a load of packs to get the chase cards. I bought a lot of 151 but still need the majority of the expensive cards. I don’t want to spend 000’s finishing it. I’m going to go after putting a collection together of my two favourite Pokemon, Eevee and Zapdos.

I’ve started collecting recently and plan on completing the master set of the base set.
Fortunately, I was given my cousins old binder many years ago which included various cards from the Original, Gym & Neo series.
I only need 29 more cards in the base set, so I will slowly fill in the gaps.
Maybe once I’m done, I will see what I’m missing in the other sets 🤷♂️

I sort of blend themes and specific pokemon. For example I like pikachu trainer cards/Red's pikachu but not just plain pikachu because it reminds me of watching the anime growing up and provides an emotional connection. I try to get eeveelutions. Also, I'm going to be making a collection based on what my pokemon team was for each of the video games. I'm also contemplating what I want to do about 151 which I find to be an awesome set, with so many great card arts.
Im close to a master crown zenith set with the full galarian gallery. I also focus on IRs and SIRs that i love the artwork of. My binders look like little art galleries! I may also begin focusing on a select few of my favorite pokemon.
My collecting goal for the next year is to build English language versions of the nine Generations Start Decks that came out in Japan last month. I adore the idea of having a set of decks to represent the nine eras of Pokémon so far, and I'm hoping that building these will allow me to have an easy way to onboard friends and family into the card game.
I'm trying to collect every Tsareena card! There are a few other favorites I'm lowkey collecting with the end goal of eventually getting every one, but Tsareena is my favorite and my focus. I have every one except the Play Pokemon cards, which are far harder to find in person. I might have to eventually cave and TCGPlayer them, but I've enjoyed hunting the others in the meantime!
I'm in this weird spot where at first I just wanted to finish my childhood Pokedex binder, but now I've seen the new ( to me ) illustration rares and my gosh they're so pretty! I want those! There's so many though, and scattered across all the expansions, so I rip a few random boosters and get nothing. I start buying more of the same kind of booster, and now I've got all this bulk (and still no art rares), I may as well dabble in a master set as well 😂😂 it's such a rabbit hole, I've only been back in the hobby for a few months

Agree with everything you said in the video, collecting the pristine gold star set is an insane goal i set for myself in 2024 but I’ve had many other goals like collecting all my favorite Suicunes that are just as enjoyable as completing my gold star set, there’s a collection goal for everybody and any budget! I'm working on all WOTC sets as that's the generation of Pokémon I grew up with. Just finished base set recently!
I’m finishing my Sword & Shield Master set currently (have 17 regular cards and 63 Reverse Holos to go), the one set I’d gotten into enough some years back that I feel I should finish, plus all Togekiss cards. Nothing like collecting every card of one’s favourite mon! Especially if it’s one that never got huge favour from TPCi or fans, so there isn’t that many and they’re not dear at all. Attached the matching Togepi/Togetic cards for each set Togekiss comes from as well, to complete the evolutionary family and because they’re a cheap, small edition.
Stretch goals include, in order:
* Togepi and Togetic cards from Gens 2/3 (not a cheap proposition, hence having it separate).
* Upgrading the Sword & Shield set to a Grandmaster by getting all the other variants (except Jumbos, primarily because there are signed Zacian and Zamazenta ones that only had 20 made - I’m nowhere near that bullish).
* Reprints of Sword & Shield cards in other sets in the Gen 8 block. Debatable whether this falls under Grandmaster, but I have it mapped out in case I close in on finishing the Other Variants enough to consider it.

I love the idea of chase cards but I’m fully aware I love gambling and don’t let it control me, I’m just starting collecting and I’ve spent a fair amount in the last month but I’m doing it with the intention to play so I’m building a collection to build decks to enter tournaments but I am collecting a master set of Shrouded Fable for the fun of it because most of the SIRs and stuff aren’t expensive. I even pulled the Cassiopeia within 15 packs so it’s going well to get it all fairly cheap
right now, im collecting every card of exeggcute. i find it super appealing to have so many arts of the same pokemon. I chose to start with exeggcute because its affordable compared to my other faves (mew 😔💸💸) and its much more interesting than a pokemon from a newer gen because i get to collect cards from so many eras. i also love that this collecting style allows me to appreciate even common cards, like my favorite card from my collection is a common aquapolis exeggcute. great video btw! it really helped me think about my pokemon goals for the long term

Personally, i point myself towards a personal and money goal. I am 13 years old. I don't have a job so i have to make money in other ways such as stocks and pokemon investments. To my surprise, i have been able to get some sealed product that has skyrocketed in recent months such as a fusion strike bb and a mew upc as my christmas gift. After I pulled a bubble mew from a tin, I realized what my goal in pokemon collecting was, to obtain every single mew card. Obviously, that goal as of now is very unrealistic, so that's why I am using pokemon as a money source. I love this hobby and I hope I can stay here forever.
I'm so lucky to have started my collections in 2017. Bought master sets of base, jungle, fossil and genesis for around 300$ all together. Now working on the rest of neo. Discovery getting close. ❤
I just started collecting again, my goal is to matter set all the new scarlet and violet sets from cheapest to expensive. My plan is to just buy the the dollar amount of the chase card in booster packs. And then buying singles from there.
When it comes to buying, I usually buy the products which have nice promo cards and open the included packs for the thrill of ripping. I buy sealed products (displays) for profit and the singles I really like or which I feel are undervalued for my collection. Also I am slowly completing the SWSH TG and GG subsets as they really have beautiful but affordable cards.

I just got the urge to collect again. Learned 151 was a thing that I missed out on. Went on a wild journey to every retailer and card shop in my area and couldn't fined any. Called one random shop and the guy said he had the premium collection in stock because he forgot he had it.

I Collect every version of Decidueye and Haxorus in English and Japanese. I have Pokedex collections based of different games from different generations of cards. I collect decks to play with my Brother and friends and open packs with them for fun. Sell what I don't need along to way to help complete the others.
Collecting full evo lines of my favs - going for all English cards of each species and reverse holo/1st ed if possible.
Got all Porygon and almost all Porygon-Z but Porygon2 has a lot of hard to find and expensive 2001-2005 cards; same with the Magnemite line and Magneton.
Gen 5 and 6 mons have been a lot easier to complete provided they aren't legendaries; later gens have many EX/GX/V type cards and alternate art (Illustration/Rainbow/Gold etc)
I'm collecting Pokemon cards because of my dad. We did it together when they first released. They're nice memories I had of him and so my goal personal.
I'm just an old school collector I'm want to collect, but I know I'll have to do trades and resale of doubles.... I also am a person who sweats if I don't get everything however to me tye pack pulling is nostalgic and bring back old memories and I'm just greatful to relive the feeling expect loosing my old cards along the way so I'm fresh back after 20+ years
I wouldn’t say the gambling aspect has anything to do with ethics. Gambling on its own has nothing to do with ethics. I think it would have been better to frame it as simply something that is possibly damaging instead of possibly unethical.

i want as many lapras as possible. thats the goal that got me into the hobby just recently and Ive now found I actually enjoy playing the card game too. so i wanna build decks. maybe a lapras deck too idk. But my love for lapras is my main motivator.

I likr collecting vintage cards like Base set holos as well as specific pokemon like Gengar, Pikachu, and Charizard.
Honestly as a (yet) minor collector I buy ETB like once per each year just to feel this nice spark of gambling. I started collecting pokemon cards, because I liked the Pokemon XY and XYZ series, especially pokemon Greninja and Zygarde, which arts I really like. Also I'm the type of guy which somehow feels connected emotionally to my cards (I don't want to sell or trade them). Budget is quite my problem, but ETB exists AND "scarlet & violet" expansion adds another booster pack to ETBs, and another reverse holo, and every rare card is holo (I wasn't born under 2000, but I'm minimalist - old cards "rainbow rare" or todays few extremely rare cards are too shiny and detailed for me, I prefer reverse holos, holos, full arts and these new art rares).
Probably the only extension I want to 100% collect is pokemon detective pikachu and that's it. I'll probably just buy once per year an ETB (after getting job maybe a little more often, but not more than once per month). I just want to collect some cool cards of pokemon I like, like radiant greninja and shiny zygarde gx, etc. I don't treat it as an addiction, investment, main hobby or job - I treat it as a future memory, when I'll find and open my binder and say "hey, I remember when I bought this or when someone gave me this", even when it'll be just a normal holo.

In 1999 our six sons (now ages 25-36) and I started collecting mostly engrish Pokémon cards and placing them in binders. We did so because we already had an inkling about keeping our cards in az good condition az wuz possible back then but not with any other “goal” in mind.
In the fall of 1999 I started a collection of all Pikachu cards in engrish along with a few Japanese Pikachu promo cards. 1999 also wuz the era when I started using eBay to purchase sealed Pikachu promo cards from Japanese sellers. So by spring of 2000 I had also completed the Base, Jungle & Fossil sets in engrish and Japanese because it wuz easy to purchase sealed Japanese booster boxes during deez early months.
About 2015-16 I finally set the goal of obtaining ALL Pikachu cards in engrish and wuz already a massive collection. And in 2024 I have about 99% of the Pikachu cards printed in engrish including all reverse holos, jumbos, rares, promos, mini sets & cards tha feature Pikachu.
It’s almost 2025 and now none of my sons want my collections! They don’t want “the hassle” of selling the cards regardless of the excellent condition of the cards My goals are stymied and I wonder wha to do next 🤔🤷🏽
That sounds incredible! Sounds like you have a lot in common with David Persin, whose kids also have no interest in his massive collection. It’s probably so overwhelming!
