Agree. Don’t buy packs chasing rares to invest. Unless you just ripping for the hobby of it. You’ll end up opening 10 boosters to get the card you could of bought outright for the price of 3 booster
Worst tip actually. The singles market fluctuates too widly, there is so much more risk involved. Sealed booster boxes NEVER lose value, the worst they can do is not gain value, you can always sell them for at least what you paid for them if you bought them at retail, but the potential gains are massive.
@@ViolentRainbowit’s a good tip if you want the card. Also with your point of sealed product going up that is actually a point for buying singles so that you can keep your packs sealed so they can hold value.
@@MrAmadeus1998 That's only a point if you have no self control, I'm certainly not going to be ripping into my sealed investments. As for single cards again I tried that, and it very rarely pays off to any of of level that negates the risk and potential losses involved. The single market is just a roller coaster of ups and downs, and generally results in a massive crash that can last for years and years and years and years. You have to put way more money into single cards to earn the kind of returns you are basically guaranteed from sealed booster boxes. Imagine you spent $300 on that super popular new card everyone loves, just to see it drop to $80 in 4 months and flat line for years. DEVASTATING. DEPRESSING. CRUSHING. Imagine if instead you spent that $300 on two of the popular new booster box that just came out, it's only going to go up, no depression, no crushing, no devastation.
Mistake 3 is one of those i make quite often. ive realised its better to have one very liquid and pricey item as opposed to a hundred cardss worth 2 or 3 quid.
Not necessarily. You never know, sometimes a card might be in a pop movie one day and it sky rockets. Life can be weird like that. But yeah a top 5 chase card of a set is better.
@@Tekkzn yeah, but for example, a magnezone from crown zenith won't really climb as much, or a spheal ar in Japanese won't go that far, unless after a loooong time. But you are right, like the pikachu from crown zenith is going up.
You could put the argument differently. Betting on one card rising in price is actually foolish. Even safe bets can burn you. So having a portfolio of cards can be a safer bet. A psa 10 greninja will likely be an easier sell in the future than some random IR. But the demand for the card might dwindle and you find yourself holding a card worth 100$ that you paid 700 for.
I was arguing with people before who think buying vintage is a smart play. Their prices are pretty stagnant and it's for yourself. And keeping the packs sealed are much more valuable than ripping them. It's funny though, I have that Slowking card as well and it's one of my favorites. That, Blaine's Moltres, and my Neo Espeon I will probably never sell.
One of the better “avoid these investing mistakes” videos as of late. I like that you made the destination between “investment and collecting”. I feel like many videos fail to highlight that distinction. Great video as always, Merry Christmas to you and everyone reading this message.
My raw singles collection consist of about 6-8 that are on display that I can see every day & ONE high quality binder. That binder had a mixture of vintage & modern IR/SIRs including my Base Set Master that im working. If that binder fills 🤷♂️, it means its time to get rid of stuff. My "investments" will always consist of top quality slabs & sealed products
Mistake 4 is so true, knowing the scheme of the market and understanding what’s happening in real time is one thing but looking at long term can be hard when it becomes emotional. “Oh I love this set I need to get it now” but is that really what you need? Can you enjoy it when it’s actually more feasible? It’s all personal at the end of the day but such good lessons to talk about it in this video. Keep up the great content as always man, merry Christmas to you and the fam and happy holidays! 🎄🎊🎉
new to the hobby, i have a few preorders on prismatic evolutions around 70 packs total. do you think as someone who wants to collect the set I would be better off opening all of it or should I save some to resell. I'm guessing prismatic will stay high for the short term but after a year or so will come down in price, so I would think it would just be better to get in then if I want to invest rather than collect. would love to hear your advice!
Me personally I’m going to try and buy 4 Pokemon center etb’s and then some other etb’s on release from like target. I want to sell right at the peak as preorders for a single Pokemon center etb is like 200 bucks, which means that stamped promo is going to go buck wild. But I’m just going to sell my stash for more Pokemon cards haha.
I think starting out we have all made a lot of mistakes. Hopefully we learn from. I definitely did. I used to open way more packs than I should and I would consider buying cards during hype versus waiting a couple months after release. There are a lot of people out there also that decide to grade with random companies like you mentioned or grade cards knowing they won’t get that 10.
To grade with the big companies, it looks like we have to use a middleman here, I’m guessing otherwise shipping will be hundreds. I’m just too risk adverse adding an extra person into the mix 😅
Once you realize it’s all just “stuff” … you don’t really care too much… collections get destroyed and happiness is fleeting… ripping a pack here and there is cool but as a grown man… not really crazy about cards anymore… I personally like the shows and games more than the cards… now if you play using the cards that’s cool but for collecting… I prefer other tcgs ..: Pokemon not so much
I have my motherload of holds but I also sell product that pays for my pack openings. 90% of the cost of the packs im opening is by flipping 151 currently, I'm using the demand and sacrificing the desire of me opening it and keeping it, taking those funds and opening "less desirable sets" and that money goes further in those sets becuase prices are lower.
Do you think in 3 to 8 years Pokemon pocket will replace physical cards no more being made. Pocket sales has been good it literally getting rid of scalpers because you can’t sell the pack or card that’s the whole point for Pokemon TCG is collect and trade and resell products high…that’s means new collectors will want to get physical cards and sealed products for the nostalgia like a penny common cards can go up to $5 maybe $10 because there are not prints being made
I am just saying it’s a thought because everything is getting replaced by technology and virtual…example who still uses DVDs blu rays I know a few do but really majority people use streaming especially the new generation then the new gen consoles video game will be the last supposedly…stores are accepting crypto now people collect nfts…pokemon is in high demand way more than ever but we have scalpers ruining it for kids and collectors…sooner or later they will get tired and rely on Pokemon pocket…the whole point of Pokemon TCG is collecting and trading and for kids not adults to resell or selling your card…us older people may not like but it all about the kids and the new generation of kids that’s just want everything virtual
Best tip - buy singles‼️🔥💥
100%
Or
At least set yourself a reasonable pack limit per set :)
(easier said than done...)

I really think this is the best most useful video I’ve seen. Ever. Thx✌

@Tekkzn Trueee, look at some of the SWSH trainer galleries, some are on a big trend upward.

I’m currently investing heavily in Crown Zenith sealed boosters.
Rule #4 also is basically, buy the card that you want instead of completing the whole set that you don't even like

Scalpers are in the pokemon scene. Anyone who buys all the product and hordes it to only escalate prices is a scalper.
I 💕 being a scalper
Keep the booster boxes sealed an chase top single cards that you like
Thank you for all the help, you're awesome.

I bought some Surging PC ETBs second hand, so I’m not sure if that counts as buying from scalpers.
Say what you want about PSA. They are the market. Unless you got something worth a Bekett grade
Yeah, totally agree
Got to stick with 9’s 10’s
Great video and tips Merry Xmas 🎉

Is trying to chase the poncho pikachu promo’s a waste of time and money?
GREAT VIDEO

Good stuff my boy!🙏 merry christmas pokemon friends

Smart way to approach it!
me just buying 3 slabs in the last week 🚶♂️
What about TAG 😅😂
We will all be rich off Pokemon and it’s partly because of Phil ‼️
grading ruined this hobby

PSA is getting a lot of hate rn, because is more and more suspicious their system. And TAG is growining step by step.

I don’t think pokemon will ever stop making physical cards, having a physical card in hand will always be better than having a digital one
Why would Pokemon neuter their own TCG for Pokemon Pocket? One has been around for decades.
