I’m sure it was the movie studio that wanted John Wayne to appear to be a singeing Cosby. The two famous singing cowboys were Roy Rogers and Gene Autry. Now young John Wayne was expected to rise, and they thought all good guy cowboys sing.
Dang! That was a scary fall the horse took at 5:47. I believe JW was lip syncing cause that couldn't of been his voice. First time to see Loretta Young's sister Polly Ann Young in a movie. I enjoy seeing Gabby Hayes in these old movies.
John was quite athletic and agile when he was twenty-six; and a heck of a horseman. It's a wonder why it took him ten long years to break through into main stream film. Remember, this same year, 1933, Randolph Scott was already making "A-Westerns" for Paramount. Luckily for us, Wayne would have forty-six more years of fine work to give; maybe even more had he not smoked so much. A lot of those actors quit for not breaking through after a few years; Duke never quit!
Wow John Wayne singing. As surprising as clint and marvin singing in paint your wagon. Did they use the same set in several films. Speedway racing with horses and stagecoaches. Cool.
Saw before. Fun to watch. Rodeo scenes from Pendleton Round-up. Interesting steer wrestling as most have a hard time throwing steers. Thanks for sharing.
The main actress Polly Ann Young has a few sisters and the most famous was Loretta Young we all know from so many movies. Miss Polly lived a long life and made quite a few movies herself.
Gabby must have been the highest paid actors in both sides of Hollywood. Seems like he had a part in alot of different actors becoming famous. With and without teeth. Lol
Wayne made a ton of these formula B-and-C Westerns at Vitaphone and Lone Star (later Republic) after his basically wooden lead performance in 1930's Fox spectacular "The Big Trail", which almost sank the studio. In these, he relearned his craft and all parts of making a movie, creating the John Wayne persona Walter Wanger saw for "Stagecoach" in 1939.
Omg! There wernt that many people in the whole wide west at that time to fill those stands! The cows their bulldogging are full grown, their supposed to be yearlings half that size! Hollywood dont know shit! So unreal. And I love John Wayne.
A bit rough, acting wise, at times. The music, obviously mpodern, could hav ebeen left out. Sorry. And John Wayn'e shooting style at the start was shocking. BUT a very satisfying movie and thank you for the upload. And the leading actress, sister to looretta Young, was good. But, asgain, seeing the dresses she wore and the telegraph lines, in what year is the movie set please?
This is where Gene Autry got his Big Break. John Wayne told the studio I look stupid & won't do this, again, if you want a Singing Cowboy, hire that kid out in Oklahoma on the radio named Autrey that can actually sing & play a Guitar..
I believe I know how they make the horses fall. They stop the film, then the rider gets on a dummy horse with the front legs fold in like a folding table. Then they blow a lot of dust to make the fall look real. A fall like that would break the horses legs. No horses are ever injured. The public would not like it if they injured the horses.
highly doubt they went to that much trouble. most likely just tripped the horses. they didn't think about things the same way we do today. you give them too much credit.
I've watched a few of these Lone Star pictures over the last few weeks. They obviously had a problem with the locations. The road where the stage stops and the cliff dropping into the pool are used in almost all the pictures that I've watched. The original rodeo footage was great however.
@Clark Gable At 24:19-24:22, it's showing an out of focus cowboy roping, I think that's John Wayne roping the calf, isn't it? Is that John Wayne at 24:19-24:22?
JW was a Stunt Man before he began to act also . These were low budget films back in the day . Of course suitable scenic locations in proximity to the studios were used frequently by all the studios .
Does anyone know who wrote & where the opening instrumental music came from ???.....its not listed in the credits & other copies of the film don't have it.....the horn & guitar have heroic strains of good triumphing over evil which to my ears personifies what JW is all about.
RIP all to who? At 24:19-24:22, it's showing an out of focus cowboy roping, I think that's John Wayne roping the calf, isn't it? Is that John Wayne at 24:19-24:22?
I just notice a thing inside the stadium right on the pole,. a pair of lamp or a loudspeaker. The announcer still using a manual bull horn during the event.
The camera angles never show his right hand ( that would have been strumming and/ or picking ) . What we can see of left hand doesn't corespond to typical chord shapes ,and doesn't change in time with chord changes . So regardless of any vocal efforts or not , the guitar was faked . But this was the era of Singing Cowboy , both in films and music . Gene Autry , Rex Allen , Roy Rodgers , etc, etc . Lone Star Productions didn't have one , and it would have been almost neglect to not try to gain a little crossover action . With apologies to Bruce Willis , Kenau Reeves, and Don Johnson , it's generally more successful to take a good singer and guitarist and teach them to ride a horse on camera than the reverse .
They where put down if they broke anything and if they survived they where no good for filming for that day lots of stunt men and horses where killed or wounded at this time. One of the stunt men who doubled John Wayne did a lot to implement safety measures for horses and stuntmen a good man here is a link for you en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yakima_Canutt_filmography
Well even i.,i aint accepting mr judge offer that deputy sherief..i also have plans and that is to see another JW great movie..,sorry judge better try talk to Barton give him that deputy srar.
Although the "strings" at 12:37 were pretty good, dramatic. I think it was the cheesy 1990s Casio-sounding "trumpet" sound in the other parts that I found out of place.
JW never sang anything! He didn't like to sing. He once claimed he couldn't carry a tune in a bucket. So funny! It's the same song that he sings in another movie! 😅
He sang “Titwillow” in The Shootist with Bacall, probably the closest he came to singing. The guy at the rodeo must have his megaphone Set on WIFI with the speakers.
I guess prople were a lot simpler back then and movies were a big novelty so they didn't the moronic goofy nonsense screenplay , who knows , may have been based on some real events
Sorry, this is bloody awful, not because the movie is inherently bad (I actually love old B-westerns) but because it’s laced with that horrendous electronic music score that Sony created for this and several other of the Wayne Lone Star/Monogram productions when released to laser disc back in the ‘90s. They did this to more or less try to “re-copyright” these films-this was the first time any of the Line stars had been transferred to home video from 35mm prints. Ultimately, though, the only thing that they own are the actual scores themselves. The underlying films are completely in the public domain. Interestingly enough, when this same set of films was shown on AMC it was, thankfully, WITHOUT the music scores.
Wow! This awesome. A 90 year old picture in pretty decent condition. Good movie.
John made all great movies, this is the type of movies I love.

hell, we were all athletic and agile at 26.
Gabby looks a lot younger without his beard! For the parts that he plays, the beard fits in perfect! Great movie!! Thanks!
Wow John Wayne singing. As surprising as clint and marvin singing in paint your wagon. Did they use the same set in several films. Speedway racing with horses and stagecoaches. Cool.

I love the old western. They are the best.HA! HA!
It doesn't get any better than Duke, Yak and Gabby.
I have seen them 100 of times.l get much out as i did the first time.
The main actress Polly Ann Young has a few sisters and the most famous was Loretta Young we all know from so many movies. Miss Polly lived a long life and made quite a few movies herself.
I recall rodeos like that from the early 40's.
I believe they used actual footage from the rodeos in Casper WY., or The Calgary Stampede.
Gabby must have been the highest paid actors in both sides of Hollywood. Seems like he had a part in alot of different actors becoming famous. With and without teeth. Lol
Love Gabby Hayes too. I thought Polly Ann Young was Loretta Young, but it turns out they are sisters! I looked that one up.
Great crime busting cowboy movie every parts are perfect scene are played till end part..tnx i enjoyed
What a great movie, first class
The stage driver said there were fifty men after them, and the man from Utah, knocked them off their horses. I only saw four riders.
that's because the driver was blowing up the story when he told it. the truth is often not as interesting.
the good guy wins, win win,the girl aint bad looking either, rip JOHN WAYNE,HE KNEW WYATT EARP

The film crew used what was quickly available.
These people do get married mighty fast in those days 😂

Somewhere between 1870 and 1940.
One thing about John Wayne is no singer. I like the way they throw their shots with their six guns. (Mississippi gulf Coast)
that is not Wayne actually singing. even he said he could never sing. the singing was dubbed in during post production.

It looks like the guitar John Wayne is playing doesn't have any strings ?!!!!?

John Wayne doesn’t need strings. X^]
I had to carve myself a fast walking stick!
Um Dez - Muy Bueno - Very Good
Looks like Wayne hadn't quiet learned how to shoot a gun properly, yet.
that horse was so dispiteful of the calf

A young gabby Hayes, w/o his beard
Ripe “ Old Age of 24 “ 😄😄.
soooo...what does that do to a horse when they trip it like that at 5:46 and a 200lb man on it , take a good look .

The music additions are bad and off putting! But a great movie!
he has done it to another well i guess i wont watch any more vids of his, going to look for original
Agreed I have to find the original without the dubbed in music, nonetheless a great movie.
Strange music for a 1930s movie. Think it's dubbed in.
Well even i.,i aint accepting mr judge offer that deputy sherief..i also have plans and that is to see another JW great movie..,sorry judge better try talk to Barton give him that deputy srar.
The added music was a noble concept but doesn't work in this film.
Although the "strings" at 12:37 were pretty good, dramatic. I think it was the cheesy 1990s Casio-sounding "trumpet" sound in the other parts that I found out of place.
youthful and handsom

Before JW decided to be a real man, and not a singing cowboy.
We all know, he never did the actual singing 😄😄.
@@dorothycoker8830, very true. He could not carry a tune unless it was in a paper bag.
I guess prople were a lot simpler back then and movies were a big novelty so they didn't the moronic goofy nonsense screenplay , who knows , may have been based on some real events

I am with you on the cheesy added music. We were actually watching this to figure out where Eugene Levy got his Don Mills character for SCTV.
Repeat
I like John Wayne, but in reality his singing voice sounds like frogs mating in a 5 gallon bucket!
that is not Wayne actually singing. even he said he could never sing. the singing was dubbed in during post production.
