    You should always wear a little bell and carry pepper spray when in bear country. You can tell black bears are in the area because their poop is full of twigs and berries. You can tell when grizzly bears are in the area because their poop contains little bells and smells like pepper spray.

    I have black bears where I live and had one snap a peach tree in half to eat the peaches. I have had a few unintentional close encounters with them in which we crossed paths. I carry a gun just in case, but in our encounters we both create distance and go about our way. You just never know though. I don't ever want to kill a bear. I enjoy seeing them, but I don't go looking for them. I respect them and leave them in peace.

      I carry both a .44 and bear spray. In every study I've seen the spray is much more effective and I feel the same I don't want to kill a bear or anything else really. Yeah I leave them alone and when I encounter them I give them respect and space.

      @@doublethomas8415 a .44 will likely piss em off anyway. A pistol is not prime bear take down tools. A high powered rifle is. Better than nothing I suppose, but, I would hate to HAVE TO use a pistol on a Bear. Means I am too close already. Bow hunters do not hunt bears with bows..........unless they have a death wish. Yea I have seen and watched bow hunters take down bears, but, I would not want any part of that scenario. I have even seen bow hunters get charged after the initial shot and the Guide has to save their asses with a rifle shot. I would not want to kill a bear, I do not collect "trophies" for my man cave. I respect God's creatures too much. If it's me or the bear, then yea, I fire on em. Black Bears often do fake charges, ya gotta have nerves of steel to face that. Glad I have never had too.

    It's a very good thing that he identified you at the distance he did instead of say 50 yards, which might have initiated a charge from having been startled at a range that he would have considered too short to make a retreat.

    In my opinion, these guys did good. These aren't your typical "more afraid of you than you are of them" bears. Where they live, they ARE the boss. Firing warning shots isn't always the best. It could cause the bears roger curious, especially if they don't associate the gunshot with "danger". A lot of times, it's best just to sit still, and watch. Shoot only if you have to.

      @horvathbenedek3596 5 років тому +6

      @@claymac7895 I meant arrow, the text prediction probably sumed I wanted to write bow, considering I used the word a sentence before. No, bows are not effective killing machine, because they do not cause tissue damage to kill the bear fast enough. They might do if you hunt from a post, and the bear does not see you. A charging bear? A cross and a prayer is more effective.
      They mentioned A gun. ONE. One guy had a gun, the other had a bow. The bow guy was unprepared.
      Talk with actual hunters BTW. Even if they hunt with a bow, they will have a Desert Eagle or a .44 magnum revolver for animal attacks, because bows are not fast enough. Even assuming you are quick with the bow, you will make maybe one follow-up shot before the charging bear gets to you, and you are dead.

      MTrefiner , I lived AK bush for 27 years & bears DO NOT fear humans. Black bears in particular see humans as FOOD. They are however instinctively aware of human pheromones & when one is UNafraid they smell that & know theyre dealing w "something" that can kill them. IF theyre hungry/desperate enough they will attack anyway. Ive had literally 1000s of bear encounters & the ONLY absolute is their unpredictability. DO know that the more familiar they get w humans the higher the probability of an attack as experience has taught them we are "harmless". AK F&G teaches once you get a "cabin bear" ( one that keeps coming back around) KILL IT!!

      MTrefiner , I lived 27 years in remote Alaskan bush. Worked w the worlds BEST bear F&G experts & taught THEM stuff about bears they didnt know. All they had was "College" educations which at best is scetchy. Nobody knows the wildlife better than thoes of us whos EXPERIENCE has taught us. YOU sound like a college boy w NO experience. Just another self acclaimed "troll" whos only half right. After youve lived w bears daily & had 1000s of bear encounters, raised 13 abandoned cubs, and have some REAL experience you/I can have an intelligent conversation. Til then, don't let your " knowledge" get you killed. Tredwell thought he knew bears & now hes bearshit. Anyone who thinks bears are afraid of people is a fool. Granted, some have learned CAUTION but they're never afraid of mere humans. And your wrong about them not fearing death. Instincts alone have a built in self preservation mode. Hunger or rage over rides that instinct FOR last ditch attempt to STAY alive when they're starving.

      @@davejan744 ...I have black bears in my backyard...they pass thru as it's an old trail they've used for centuries. Never have they ever come near me or seemed aggressive in any way. They are shy, secretive, and very quiet. My 3 dogs ran up to one passing thru, and I ran after them yelling NO NO. The dogs stopped, they knew, the bear kept walking didn't skip a step...looked at me, knew I was protecting it from the dogs, and just kept walking....went his merry way into the woods.

    Yes bears most certainly do eat hunters, or anyone else for that matter. It's pretty well documented that we are on their menu as a selection. Now they don't tend to portray predatory behavior, but it does happen. When it does, DO YOU WANT TO BE THE ONE THAT'S NOT PREPARED?

      Acutally, you want to be downwind of the bear. If you were upwind, the wind would carry your scent toward the bear. Also, studies have shown that bear spray is much more effective than a gun. Unless you are an expert marksman, hitting a charging bear with a fatal shot is difficult. Bear spray is like a sawed off shot gun - a cloud of 2% pepper spray changes their mind real quick. And that handgun is useless against a grizzly and most other charging bears.

    I was in the woods in Red Dead 2 and i came upon what appeared to be an abandoned shack. I went up to it and opened the door and to my surprise I was face to face with a large grizzly ! It moved towards me immediately and I didn't have time to close the door. I heard my horse behind me, running away as the bear knocked me to the ground. It was on top of me for what seemed like an eternity. Then everything started going black as the Grizzly tore my character to pieces. And the moral of this story is, be careful with abandoned shacks or cabins in the wilderness! Also, when I replayed the beast was gone! And I examined the shack and discovered that it got in there through a back door it had busted down .

He talked with a Ranger, who knew about this bear, and told my friend that the bear wasn't hunting the hunters, but just lazy! Turns out the bear would wait for the hunters to make a kill and field dress the take, and when the hunter left would move in to clean up the remains Apparently the bear has been doing this for years...
