I live in Alaska and throughout the summer and autumn go on many hike in, boat in and fly in fishing adventures, fly fishing for salmon, steelhead, trout, dolly varden and grayling. Countless times I have come upon bears including grizzlies with cubs. All are potehtially deadly and unpredictable 100% of the time. Sure, yes, it's true that bears are not always aggressive nor defensive. But nonetheless, I am always armed with both a 12 gauge brush gun (loaded with rifled slugs and shot) and a .44 magnum handgun strapped to my chest. I also carry bear spray. Although it's true that holding bear behavior awareness is more important than any firearm, four times I have done everything right and nothing stupid yet was charged, and those weapons saved my life. It's foolish to enter bear habitat without a firearm.
I can tell you never had to fire that deer & home intruder defense handgun 44 at a bear because you are still alive and I high think you are another UA-cam comments liar because Alaskans like me who guided 26 years for these bears never ever use such a wimpy handgun for Alaskan bears and never did any guide I knew ever used wimpy handguns for bears.
The common bear gun in Alaska starts at 338 win mag with the most common are the 375 H&H mag and the 416 magnums not a wimpy handgun of any size !.
This BS that handguns are bear cannons is PUNK ASS BS by big city slicker green horns who never in there life ever been to Alaska.
It really gets stupid with morons like you thinking large Alaska bears can be knocked off with a single pistol bullet that has less energy than a 30-30 win and the pistol bullet only carry's it's energy for a short range .
The next PUNK ASS stupidity is bears start charging at long range so you have time to fire all 15 round from a large auto pistol .
@WTF Kyle From what I have researched, a 10mm is a very capable (and recommended) bear defense "handgun' (knowing that handguns are not the ideal firearm like a rifle or shotgun, but they can be practical depending on the situation), but the other important aspect is the ammo. It is recommended to use hard cast ammo as opposed to FMJ.
Pure, Untamed, Incredible, Funny, Beautiful, Suspenseful, .......Just another Captain Quinn Masterpiece...
That is fishing. Uncertainty, questions and excitement. Nice vid!
You went in there unarmed???!!! That's just crazy and just plain Stupid! I only live in Massachusetts, but I fish in some remote heavily wooded areas that have a pretty heavy concentration of black bears, and I recently had a very close encounter with one! Thank God I had my .45-auto on me, I had just enough time to draw and fire a round over his head and luckily it scared the shit out of him and he ran off! After I calmed down I got the hell out of there! I didn't want to hurt him if I didn't have to, fortunately the day had a happy ending both for myself and the bear!
Craig Murley one issue we face in Canada however (where this is filmed) is legally we are not allowed to carry a restricted firearm in the woods , (restricted being any handgun or rifle the government looks "scary")... so when it comes to fishing here in Canada where this is filmed really we don't have much of an option as far as a firearm goes! I suppose if you had your "pal" and were willing to cary a rifle or shotgun over your shoulder that would work, but when wading upstreams that's pretty difficult to do... soooo bear mace and bangers it issss for us!
Craig Murley I bet that's not the only kind of happy ending you needed that day. The bear probably needed one, too, from an Asian black bear, no doubt.
A .45 is NOT a bear defense weapon! I have one and like it, but it was designed for hydra-shock to knock down a human and is not capable of knocking down even a black bear, let alone a grizzly. With bears, particularly Grizzlies, you need penetration. I fish in the area where this was filmed and carry a 12 gauge loaded with 3” magnum, Sabot slugs. I have never had to fire it - back away, you are the intruder! P.s. bear bangers are not helpful with Grizzlies.
I suppose it depends on your definition of "their house". It doesn't take a lot of extrapolation to include the entire province of British Columbia, with the exception of Vancouver and a few other small cities. The province is enormous and sparsely populated. For a sense of the scale of the province, you should note that it is larger than California, Oregon and Washington (state) combined. There is lots of room for the bears and for people that are seeking recreation, its just that you don't know when you will encounter a bear. I have never shot at a bear and have every intention to keep it that way - I am not a hunter and I even release all the fish that I catch.
By spending my vacation $$$ in British Columbia I am supporting low-impact tourism and thereby the local economy. If you spend any time up there, you quickly realize that the economies of the smaller cities and towns in BC are primarily supported by resource extraction - principally timber and mining. Unlike those industries, fly-fishing tourism leaves intact the habitat on which the bears depend. The fees I pay for fishing licenses and daily permits (over $300 Canadian, this year) help to fund broader conservation efforts and also help to pay the salaries of fish and game enforcement officers who are the first line of defense for wildlife. On the whole, I have no difficulty justifying my role in the eco-system and my relationship with the bears, of whom I remain in awe. @@lovely3097
to not have great respect and caution for grizzlys is to find your self its dinner.
yea, carry a weapon powerful enough to drop in one shot if the situation arises. Bears aren't in the compassion business.

There is always the factor of Murphys Law. The unpredictable unforeseen tradgedy occuoring.

Because of the possibilities of accidents life and death emergency situations occouring and to avoid tragedies preserve and save human life which is entirely worthy to preserve and save.

bs1820 youre stupid! Many bears have been stopped when charging if u dont believe search this here on UA-cam-(bear charging hunters stopped dead on tracks)
@@bauzel5890 yeah tell that to all the experts who knew everything that died as experts
Real with no B.S. thanks guys.
your in Grizz country with no protection, that pretty much says it all.
Not even a .44 mag, why take chances like that? The noise alone makes it worth carrying a handgun .
The 'new' thinking is 'animals don't bother you, if you don't bother them'. You can't predict what a wild animal is going to do no matter how much college you've had! He has protection, big teeth and claws...why don't you?!
@David Tucker he's trolling you lol
There are lots of guns here in canada. You are allowed to bring guns with you into the woods/wilderness. I'm Canadian. U can google it np
Edit: he is right. No handguns
"In general, the only firearms allowed for wilderness protection are non-restricted rifles and shotguns. The following individuals, provided they are Canadian residents and have a licence that allows them to possess restricted firearms, may be authorized to carry a handgun or restricted long gun for wilderness protection:"
His comment is pretty fucking stupid
Lmao please be more obvious.. camping in areas with bears without a firearm isn’t uncommon.. at all..
A hand gun is going to piss off a grizzly.. not kill it. If your going to bring a gun it better be a powerful one, you better have it on your side at all times, and you better pray you can pull the trigger in time. If you miss your dead. Might as well go without one to be honest
Love the Bears, go see them on Kodiak, helicopter ride is amazing
looking around . . . It was so beautiful we went again again!! Big Bear, called him #Scarface . . I miss him, hope he is still alive, he graced us with his presence and I didn’t want to leave . . . 😍🙏🐻🐻🐻
I wouldn't share my Glazed Donut or flyrod. Your the Camera man after that one😉
Loved this video and the respect shown for nature and the creatures that live there.
Thank you for sharing.... Would like a video on what you do when you hook a fish on the fly. How to you bring the fish in?
I Love this. The nature. The beauty. The bear eating. Man, I am jealous. Beautiful guys.
First video I've watched for this channel which has now got me organising my fishing gear waiting for Spring to hit here in Massachusetts.
Thankfully, we don't have Brown/Grizzly bears here, but, the black bears are just about everywhere out here in Western Massachusetts.... that and Moose.
Subscribed.
Love all the bears, and the fishing is fantastic!! Thanks for sharing this vid ☺👍
The bear then taps ya on the shoulder and says, "thanks for catchin that fish for me".
I would like to go fishing there for steelhead - but a bear even a quarter size of grizzly would freak me out beyond excitement levels.
Love seeing the Captain in stealth mode.
Boy if I were younger...thanks for sharing..grizzly bear crazy
When the man asks, what's the bear doing. I said SAYING GRACE!
I enjoyed the video. It's a bummer the so-called friend didn't share his fishing rod. What a tight wad! Real friends share when the other took a lost because of some unforeseen, unprovoked misfortune. Keep living the good life!
this is by far the best episode of Ozarks yet!
Sharing is overrated!
Every man for himself!
Good vid!
“Pauly might’ve appeared to move slow, but it was only because Pauly didn’t have to move for anybody” (Henry Hill)
I've ran into lots of black bears but never a grizzly. So cool!!!
Too bad about your rod being broke and I guess your 'friend' didn't want his broke either
cheers 👍👍
It's so entertaining watching you fly Fishing I am still learning but I always have passion. You're the best conservative fisher on UA-cam I'd say!
+James Wallace Thanks for the comment James, I really appreciate it! Hope to see you on the water some day!
I know you like to tour fishy water's so check out Birkenhead River or other river systems related to the area you would LOVE IT. 👌
Tyrone I agree with you, if I'm in the middle of nowhere Id rather have a gun hoping not to use it....but just in case.
Hayley Rose condoms and guns better to have and not need than need and not have 😋
no one has ever fish there...we all like to think this.
Don't be fools with your life. I'm in bear country, my .44 magnum is with me. Loaded with 6 hot, hardened lead 320gr. bear stoppers. Even the muzzle blast from the .44 mag will usually turn them. I'm not a gambler because the odds are always against gamblers.
Charles Joseph , the laws in Canada don't allow you to own handguns. This is more like it. If the laws in Canada did allow you to own them, you'd have them. Please don't play tough guy without giving a complete picture of why you don't bring a handgun with you or need one... It's simple, you can't by law. A rifle or a shotgun would be too cumbersome in this type of cover but still useful if only to turn a bear away. You probably have never seen how quickly things can turn really ugly with a bear, particularly a grizzly. Aside from your post, gorgeous video of B.C. Spectacular province.
Charles Joseph How about using a really loud horn or siren or something maybe?
@@Nexus-ub4hs Bingo!!...Guns miss and pepper spray works just as well! Plus, its usually the sound that scares them anyway, so an air horn wold work just as well..Its actually painful for animals with good hearing.
Dam !! Just found your channel/show and I love it.!! I've never actually had the opportunity to Fly Fish but it sure looks fun.
Keep up the awesome videos guys…...cheers
You KNOW the dangers and yet you still venture into Grizzly territory without firearms...you're tempting fate and playing with your lives. Some people don't fear death , but being eaten by a grizzly would be one of the worst ways to go.
Brother, after seeing all of these videos on bear attacks, I've already made up my mind, I'll never go into the woods again without a gun...a BIG gun.
How about not going into woods where you know there's bears and nobody dies ? You or the bear.
Hey, Joe-Bob...you don't NEED a firearm license to carry a handgun in the wild. What you probably meant to say was that you're an ex convict and can't OWN a gun, RIGHT ?
The kermode spirit bears are so beautiful.
Can't believe I found this channel just today
Great quality, great videos. New sub!
Yeah you would have broken Rob's rod as well then all you gous could do is look at fish lol great video boys
I've caught small wild rainbows with a sweet boron rod with 4lb line, 2lb leaders and they take all the line they want, FUN, I can only imagine those wild steelhead what a blast!!!
I was very happy to see you released the fish after the catch.
hey captain your mate made you breakfast it would start to be a bit weird if he let you use his rod 😬
Nice catch and yeah I would be super cautious of any grizzly or bear while fishing
You seem like an awesome guy captain Quinn. Really cool video, thanks for sharing.
Epic trip guys, bear encounter, sight fish and landed. I thought we might have been treated to some catch and cook Capitan Quin style.
That was epic... Good stuff captain
The is excellent raw adventure! Well done!
Been afraid of bears my entire life and is a big reason why I prefer the high desert; until I found bears also roam that area O_O
4:41 Unlucky, yells to scare it off... ends up being that one deaf bear in the forest XD
Crispy K Lol! Either that or he knew he had just about the only fish in there and he didn't give a crap about those two. I liked that uh comment at the end about friends...wtf? Glad they let the fish go too. More for the bear.😂🐾🐗🎣
Bear just made eye contact 😮. Boys get out of there 😱😱😱 OMG!
WHAT a way to camp!!! hat's off to you. Fly fishing to boot.

Amazing video Captain Quinn!!!
"Let's go down to the river, then we'll go up"

Catch and release 😍😍👍👍👍👍👍
When you take a stupid friend fishing who has no fear of bear.
I get it. One fish, more than one bear, two humans (at least). Quinn is commenting on the scarcity of what we love: steelhead. Period. Move along folks, it's a good story with meaning. I share the bear phobia and for good reason, won't stop me from fishing and exploring either. Good stuff Quinn, I'm with ya
Such a nice looking fish
this was awesome and a bit scarey. very good camera!!!
The wilderness is for animals not for human beings to be there!!! Respect these animals that’s where they live!
I'm not surprised you broke your pole handling it like that.
I lived in Everett Wa for a few years and fished quite a few rivers for Steelhead and salmon....loved the Hoh!
Bear spray minimum. Firearms maximum.
Otherwise ya exposing yourselves to an ever increasing risk of potentially being attacked with no means of protection.
great video as always cap!
Bears are great at looking like they are ignoring while they take a read. They will often dig to put their watchers at ease. I"ve seen that on youtube videos. Particularly when they stalk baby buffalo whose parents are in a group being protected. The bear will go after the babies and find one that can't keep up. The bear presses the border of the herd to get them running.
What camera did you guys use to tape this? Awesome video and commentary!!
No sir, you have no chance. He had to ponder that, lol....
Damn fool. You've entered the food chain.
Nice video guys! Good storyline to the vid. Your luck with casting, two snags in a row, and then breaking your fly rod, is exactly why mine stays in the closet most of the time, ha ha!
I this man was a Bear 🐻 🤣 he barely fits in his car👀
You guys go into predator territory at the worst possible time of the season and do it without a firearm? do you understand these beasts will eat you while you're still alive? They will rip your flesh and guts out while you lay there helpless
I once saw a grizzly in the mountains it might have been a teenager it wasn't huge bigger than me but I said oh how cute I said hi mr. grizzly bear while I drove past him on the road and the grizzly bear said hi back just put up one paw and stood up I couldn't believe it it was magical
This is what they call survivor of the fittest. He who can run the fastest.
is this in bc canada?
I live in Maine, I'm never armed when I go in the woods. I would never go where there are grizz. without being armed. Common sense.
All woods in Maine have potential of housing a grizz....... common sense bud
@Mr. Browning lol your right. I didn't realise they were only in a few spots.
Amazing camera lens
Ever heard of using a sapling as a rod? You can fly fish with a short amount of line
Wow awesome hit ....thanks for thinking it out....and he told you don't brake your rodddddd...and you did....fish trip over for you
I really enjoyed the way you showed respect to the bears being guest at their table. I really like the *take n leave* way of fishing. Enjoy & Respect wilderness!
Yes thank you! All these people saying "carry a gun" no absolutely not necessary maybe for people but not wildlife. If you don't bother them, they don't bother you
you are wrong......bears with cubs will kick your butt........male bears feeling their oats, deer/elk get crazy, same way.......consider wild animals as sociopathic/very dangerous albeit cute
Who in hell holds their rod in the middle when fighting a fish!? Lmao, rookie move.
Catch and release. Honorable!
Great video , avid fly fisherman here aswell mostly chasing sea run browns and Atlantic salmon .. hard luck when your buddies don't give you a switch or two eh , especially after that hike but hey we all aren't so thoughtful

Wow, amazing video 👍👍👍
THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR BEAUTIFUL MOVIES
Love the woods area but not too excited about being that close to a bear. Live in New Mexico where the bear can be in the yard anytime of the day. Haven't seen one in my sister's yard this year but we do see lots of deer.
Great video, thanks for sharing.
So so so much fun!!!!
oatmeal, cofee and beans.... now that is the breakfast of champions
Thank you, great video.
Wow what an awesome video
8:42 was funny haha
What can someone do when you break your rod? Are there any fly shops near?
I'm with ya....A bear is not to be underestimated, or guessed at.
