    that's correct they have a motorola VHF radio in the truck, and they do use the handset for better monitoring the radio, since the cab of the rig is loud as hell

    some sirens are operated by a foot switch and the changing tones are what catches attention

  • @thisissparta789789

    Oh, and the reason they took so long was because they were part of a 2nd or 3rd alarm response, and other companies were out on other calls.

    I'm a firefighter myself, and I don't mind..
    We have a large offroad rescue tender that due to it's weight and tires can go a max of 80 Km/h (50mph).. Our motorways are 110 or 130 km/h (70/80 mph) speed limit..
    So, it's okay that they overtake us... Especially on the long 20-30 km+ routes.. Otherwise it would make a VERY long congestion

    @hallcert Not sure what they were running on in this video, but if you pay attention to the audio there is a 3 alarm fire working in Bronx. This means ALL of Bronx units are either tied up or filling in at other houses.

    @kevinsilverado in some fdny pieces the siren you hear the federal signal pa300 is the Q some newer pieces have the eq2b but you still hear the pa300 in the city

    The reason why FDNY Rigs have telephones is because many times, FDNY dispatch will tell them to call their quarters by telephone.
    Also, the officer plays with the siren due to noise restrictions and to prevent siren hypnotisation often caused by leaving the siren on only 1 type of tone for the entire response time. A long tone ago, FDNY officers simply left the siren on wail before they realised doing this was more effective.
    Also, these trucks are heavier than European trucks. It takes a long time for one of these engines to reach 70 MPH. Usually, due to the weight, a fire truck in the States will average about 40-50 MPH if the traffic is clear enough.

    • @MariusW95
      @MariusW95 10 років тому +2

      lol, its not a phone, its simply a radio that is shaped like a phone so that they can hold it to their ears and hear dispatch better. They rarely call their quarters by telephone.

    • @Bobman84
      @Bobman84 6 років тому +2

      Why have so many FDNY trucks collided with each other then? Interesting to note some still leave the siren running even in 2017.

  • @RBayer

    @phirephoto im from upstate NY (syracuse) and cars have to stop. in NYC im quite sure its different, you cant stop 3 lanes of traffic. On the highway we're told to drive down the middle or left hand lane, because if your in the middle they can get off to either side faster than only one side.

  • @OneSkiWonder

  • @pafire11

    @Medionxtr Usually it it the officer running the sirens and E-Alarm. The driver operates the airhorn from a pull wire next to the door.

  • @51ENGINE51

    the Q is the FED-SIG Q2a... its the mechanical siren you think of when you think of a firetruck, its aka "THE SONG OF THE FIRE DEPT"

  • @EnjoyFirefighting
    @EnjoyFirefighting 12 років тому

    @howwon when we respond on the highway and traffic flows cars are passing by as well. Doesn't matter, rather would be even more dangerous when cars that go 80 to 100 mph all have to slow down to 65 or 70. We let them pass, and as soon as we get into the traffic jam (e.g. caused by MVA) we switch the martin horn on and pass them between two lanes

  • @b9consult
    @b9consult 15 років тому

    Usually if an engine company has a long run it's because they're second due or being called in on a second alarm. First due response time is five minutes or under.

  • @jmcbrid0
    @jmcbrid0 13 років тому

    @AcyclicEarth Anyone correct me if Im wrong, but I've learned they do use modern mobile radios however they use a telephone style handset instead of a regular microphone so the officer can hear the dispatcher better.

  • @NixNix-ch7ow

    Heavy truck or not, cars shouldn't be passing this fire truck on the highway the way they are.

  • @mortgagewizard40

    Happens in the uk ,especialy on the motorway, a friend of mine who was a Sub officer (yeah proper rank, now retired), informed me that even under blue lights a fire engine is not permitted in the outside lane ,(classed and an HGV) and if they needed ot pass vehickes they should return to the inside or middle lane and not stay in the outside (fast) lane of any motorway,. hence why, vehicles overtake fire engines regularly on the motorway.

  • @rscott417

    for those of you that don't know fdny rigs they're bare minimum p.o.s. just pulling out of the fire house bay you have to pin the gas to the floor. and even though it seems like everyone is passing them on the major deegen..thats why they're in the center lane, probably only doing about 55 mph cause thats all it can get up to they just recently got about 80 new engines with a bit more balls.

  • @DeltaFoxtrotWhiskey3
    @DeltaFoxtrotWhiskey3 14 років тому

    @Kingy12321 Are you seriously asking this question? Look how steady the camera is. It is not being held in anyone's hand. This means it is mounted. In a fire truck. Who do you think put it there?

  • @johnanddan
    @johnanddan 14 років тому

    @mattlovesall all though the video doest say... he is most likely responding to another alarm... when they get a call at location "A" the closest house might be house 1, when they trasmit a second alarm the next closet, house 2 will respond then for every alarm after that they send the next closest and so on

    @nilse1990 muss Crazyfogfighter schon etwas recht geben: USA allgemein, nud NYC im Speziellen, ist ein ganz andere Pflaster für Einsatzfahrten: für Einsatzfahrzeuge wird meist sehr ungern Platz gemacht, angehalten usw.
    Im Video selbst sind rund 6,3km Strecke zu sehen (knapp 3km sind zwischendurch rausgeschnitten), bei der Zeit macht das rund 60km/h, was für NYC alles andere als schlecht ist.
