And incredibly the 70-year-old's classic car Volvo P1800 - which he bought in 1966- has NEVER broken down. To date, Irvin's classic Volvo P1800 has had 857 oil changes, 30 drive belts, 150 points and spark plugs - and guzzled 120 bottles of transmission fluid. The retired school teacher bought the classic Volvo P1800 convertible for £2,650 after a THREE-HOUR test drive with a friend. MOTOR-mad Irvin Gordon is set to enter the record books when his beloved Volvo clocks up a staggering THREE MILLION miles.
And incredibly the 70-year-old's runaround - which he bought in 1966- has NEVER broken down.
To date, Irvin's car has had 857 oil changes, 30 drive belts, 150 points and spark plugs - and guzzled 120 bottles of transmission fluid.
The retired school teacher bought the convertible for £2,650 after a THREE-HOUR test drive with a friend.
Irvin, from Long Island, New York, said: "I just couldn't get out of the car. I was having such a good time.
"I spent all Friday night, all day Saturday, all day Sunday and came back Monday for a 1500 mile check up.
"Most people think it's crazy that I've clocked up so many miles -- but driving is my drug of choice.
"Where other people get rid of their cars after a few years, I've never got tired of mine.
"I used to go on driving holidays and had a 125 mile commute to work every day -- so the miles just added up."
Over 46 years with his car Irvin has driven through the USA, UK, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, France, Holland, Canada and Mexico.
He averages 60,000 miles a year - but can do as many as 100,000.
He said: "I'm sure I'll feel very bad once I find out how much I've spent on maintaining the car - I spent thousands of dollars every year on gasoline.
"But I like to drive -- it's my hobby.
"I choose to spend my time at the gas station filling the car up."
Divorced Irvin says one benefit of being on the road so much is he knows American highways so well he no longer needs a map.
He said: "My friends used to think I was slightly nuts for driving as much as I do, but now that I am getting all of this attention for my Volvo, they are very impressed.
"I've made a lot of friends because of this car."
In nearly 50 years of ownership, his car has never broken down. However, the car may have broken other things for Irvin.
He said: "I don't see my ex-wife or my kids. I can't say if that is because of the driving."
Irvin will be driving his three millionth mile on his Volvo P1800 in Alaska this autumn - then plans to continue using the car unless someone purchases it.
He said: "I'm entertaining the idea of selling it for a dollar a mile.
"It's just been driven by a little old school teacher on the weekends.
"It has never been in the rain, snow or any inclement weather.
"It's practically a new car!"
One of the most beautiful cars volvo has ever made I think, and lets be honest, while they had a real boxy period, today no one makes a more beautiful every day family car. Think about it, what car on the road is better looking, without looking to flash. A volvo pulls off an impressive trick, beauty while retaining modesty, and that's my favourite trait in an every day car.
As a person who frequently works on Volvos I can safely say they are some of the weirdest most unreliable cars on the road today. Modern ones I mean. I think they look good but what does looks really mean when a german car does everything better for around the same price. The new volvo XC90 starts at 65 thousand and only goes up from there and that in my book is.. absurd!
EJK k Partly it's an image thing, Swedish design is more interesting and more left field. German cars, with the exception of Volkswagen, have a much less friendly demeanour to them. I know, that's a superficial way to measure a car, but image is still one of the core values of many people's car choices, and as a car design student, it's the only thing I'm really qualified to comment on :). That said though, we had a 2004-ish XC90 in the family for 7 years, and that thing never let us down, it was infinitely practical too, I don't fault them on my personal ownership experience.
You spew this bullshit everywhere. Its complete and utter crap. Ive worked for Volvo for 10 years and still am, me and my family has had Volvos since I was born. They are some of the most reliable cars Ive seen, my Volvos have a much much lower failure rate than then BMWs Ive had and the Toyota my brother has
+Kristoffer Lilja Hey man if that's your experience with them then, great.. my experience with them has been nothing but a pain in the ass. We had a volvo xc70 in the shop with 45,000 miles and the turbo was leaking oil and the leak detection pump was bad. The handling was atrocious, the ride was terrible, it had no power and was not worth the same as my Audi A4 even though they were priced the same when it was brand new. Every turbocharged volvo I've seen has been a disaster in terms of reliability.. Ford owned volvo for a while and I think it was Fords fault for not funding them properly and I hope they are in a better place now without Fords micro managing. But considering there new cars are turbocharged and supercharged I'm really worried thats a bad sign for reliability in the future. The BMW of old when they were naturally aspirated were incredibly reliable and I've had really good experiences with toyota and how tough they are. My 4runner went through hell and had 300,000 miles on it. it never gave me trouble. Even after flipping it and crashing into a tree and later hitting a guard rail head on at 70mph. It still ran and drove home after I flipped it back on its wheels!
@@ejkk9513 i have 2010 d5 awd xc70 and havent had anything else than normal maintance, no special problems. Which makes me think, how bad care do you take of your car or are you just a Volvo hater?
I always loved my Volvo 240's. I owned 3. The best one was my second... an 85. I only paid 1700.00 for it and i drove it 90,000 miles. I learned to work on cars with that one, and I barely had to take it to a mechanic. It was a treasure, and beautiful!
Volvo gave him a new XC60 to commemorate the 3 millionth mile. At each million-mile mark, the company has given him a brand-new car for free.
great advertising
this man is a pure legend he drives a volvo for more than 45 years and the car is still going, now thats the power of a volvo!
What a fantastic piece of machinery, and what a fantastic man to have taken so good care of it all these years!
My dad had this exact car, would let me shift while driving really fast through mountain roads when i was like 5 years old. Great memories.
Not many drivers nowadays have that passion for their cars !
What an amazing advertisement for Volvo
What an awesome machine
The first engine rebuilt was done after 600.000 miles the second was done at almost 2 millions and Volvo will buy the car from him to take it to their museum in Sweden.
I believe that Volvo was the first car make to come out with 6 digit odometers in 1968. It was not until the 1980's and 1990's that the rest of the auto industry finally converted over to six digit odometers, that show how many hundreds of thousands of miles the car has. This change was long overdue! Until then, cars had only five digit odometers that would only show "00000" when the car turned over 100,000 miles. But if Irvin Gordon does sell his 1966 Volvo P1800 for three million dollars, he ought to apply some of that money toward custom installation of a SEVEN digit odometer, that shows how many millions of miles the car has without going back to "000000".
I have a broom that's covered millions of sweeps, it has had 6 new handles and 12 new brushes ;)
I'm surprised that he'd be able to sell it after all those years.
That's what I call - Love! :)
Earth's circumference is 40,075 km (24,901 miles). This guy could have done about 120 turns around the whole world.
I dont get why $75,000 German luxury cars cant do half of this?
Modern Volvos are some of the most unreliable cars on the road and piss poorly designed.. I work on them frequently and there nothing compared to the Germans. They just got lucky with this engine from 50 years ago or they hired really smart people to design it.
@@ejkk9513 lol everyone knows you are faking all this and you certainly are a Volvo hater since you comment to every comment in this video something bad about volvos, don't you have anything elese to do?
@@ejkk9513 like when you commented the volvo xc90 just came out it cant have alots of problems in under a year if other people on the internet have had none, you are pathetic...
@@Antilaakeri Well.. lol I've moved on years ago. I'm not a Volvo hater AT ALL. I genuinely like their exterior car design. I think Volvo makes stunning looking cars now. I've been in a mechanic shop since the age of 10 and I'm still here at near 30. I've worked on many Volvo's and in MY EXPERIENCE. Key words there, "MY EXPERIENCE". They have been a complete headache with poor engine bay space management and horrible reliability. Your experience might be different and I can appreciate that. Mine not so much.. you enjoy your Volvo to the moon and back. I personally dislike them for objective reasons. I actually work on them and in my opinion they are the worst. I'm not taking your enjoyment of them away from you. But you cannot take away my dislike of their design away from me either.
Look it up of the most car with a high mileage …. 2 Mercedes car is in the top 15
l remember a Lutheran minister back in the mid 60's who had a Volvo P544 from the 50's.
l was amazed in that he put on over 1/2 million miles as he use to travel back and forth from montreal, que to saskatchewan. rebuilt the motor at one point of time himself as well suspension. Then l remember a Catholic minister use to drive a brand new '66 Buick Electra which had me scratching my head.
I think he pulled out the speedo/cable and hooked it up to a dremel tool....... Now that I finished the video, " A dollar a mile " ? I'm going out to buy me a dremel for sure, I'm going to be RICH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. Lol.
he must have 45years of maintenance bills. Otherwise yeah, could be faked
If you read the New York Post's article on him, it does say that he had a 125 mile commute to work, and it also says that he's had around 857 oil changes, so I'm sure he does have the papers to prove he's driven 3 million miles.
Do your research, kids.
I just purchased a Volvo 940 1995 with 405k miles on it. No leaks. Very clean and good condition. My boss laughed at me when I told him I purchased a reliable car. My other car is a Mazda Miata with 235k. But now I use my Volvo for work and take me home to see my family. I made a video about it if y’all wanna Check it out. I plan on keeping it forever
Do you still have it?
@@bobjohnson205 I just parted it out this year :/
@@vincentbryan1962 So much for "forever", huh? My '90 740 GL is still going strong! I plan on keeping it forever, too! lol
@@bobjohnson205 you know. I wish I could have kept it for forever. You can plan a pretty picnic but you can’t predict the weather. I was replacing coolant temp sensor and bolting it back in too tight it cracked the engine threads and broke inside. coolant temp sensor was the make it or break it for me. I tried everything other than replacing the engine. I ended up finding a 99 geo metro that worked out better for my situation. It’s less technical than the Volvo and way more simple. Plus 47 mpg beats 20 mpg and I’m driving 80 miles a day. So, I’ll keep the brick forever in my heart.
@@bobjohnson205 everytime I see a 90’s Volvo on the road going strong I smile.
Volvo, For Life.
I don't think anyone will pay 3 million for it. Maybe he'll get around $200,000 - $400,000....if he's lucky.
this is probably the only thing that makes me proud i work at a volvo plant
Thinking about that mileage, only came to my mind he has a very nice flowerpot to put in the front garden.
Even at the first million he got one? I might have a new goal brewing. Sounds economical.
Volvo is/was definitely the best gasoline engine ever made , for longevity .
yes......
A paltry 300,000 miles on my 1990 Volvo 760 :-/
a dollar a mile baby
He was featured on the Tonight Show, & all Jay Leno wanted to talk about was what kind of sandwiches he liked when he traveled (& Jay is supposed to be a 'car nut')
I mean anyone could be first if they didn't have friends
How may times has the engine been rebuilt?
@Adam Leszkowicz They have tractor engines.
Twice.
it made the news because this car has the most miles on it (of the cars documented). If you get more miles than him on your Octavia, it will also be a big deal.
Quite simple and logic, actually ;)
he should become a taxi driver...
Look better than my 2009 BMW 320d se
1 dollar per 1 mile the car has? Cheap!
Imange he would ask 1 euro per 1 km the car has ...
00:28 Is his house number 'Two B'? Or not Two B? THAT is the question.
hes asking for 3 million dollars??wow thats a lot mnn.i doubt some one will buy it for that much price
Jay Leno
LJRossPhoto F*** yeah! Now THAT's the ticket (are you hearing this Jay?). I would would like to see you feature this car on an episode of "Jay Leno's Garage" someday. C'mon you can afford to spring a dollar a mile. But make sure he provides all the maintenance and repair documents that prove the car's actual mileage. And be sure to feature the documentation on your show too. Game?
So who is buying all the fuel ?paying for all service's? all needed repair's, all the tires? and all the lodging? looks a little small to sleep in on the
road ? or is this gentleman independently weathy? 3 million miles don't come cheap in today's world eh?
3 millons miles seems a bit exagerated but I can testify 600,000 miles on a 240 volvo that I've driven every day to go to my work and return home in the canada climate and this on the same drivetrain without any other maintenance than changing oils, replacing the timing belt(many times), the water pump ( twice) ,the alternator ( once),oil seals, steering rack and ball joints, ... and the oil pan
this car have 30 years and serve me every day...not so bad
You have made more repairs than I have in over 50 years of driving.
Victor LaBouche Believe it... it’s true and documented!
215000 miles on my s60 t5 2012 gets expensive tho
Volvo made cars that doesn't look like bricks?
Holy fuck! xD
Btw. 3 mil miles = 1050x around the globe(!)
Why so mad bro? Since I posted this I have got another 2.3k miles.
I should go drive into him and total the thing off just because he's asking 3 million for it... just laugh as the insurance company gives him next to nothing for it.
Wait, 157 oil changes? He changes his oil every 19k? Fuck kind of oil is he running?
857 oil changes is what it says in the description.
I was trying to calculate that as well . To be specific , he paid for 157 , yet I would guess he did a lot himself . He said in another video , that he changed oil every 3500 miles .
*"... he paid for 157..."*
Yeah, technically speaking, I doubt he's "paying" for much at all, seeing as he's a rolling advertisement for Volvo. I bet Volvo's picking up the tab for all that (or at least they should...)
i think 757 oil change, he was doing a 4k miles intervals
6 dislikes are from car companies that want your car to fail so you buy a new car
Can you post a video?
What are the average maintenance cost per mile?
3million dollars on a 34k dollar car. ....maybe its because it's rare for the miles?
so he changed the oil every 20,000 miles that isn't right??
+Filth Squad every 35.000.
lol lmfao
That's insane
Incredible car, eh?
Volvofan ... yes yes yes
is it as old as this one?
Also he will get a new Volvo of his choice free of charge.
The owner should start walking a little.
Description and video don't match on many points.
This car is in nY ?!!!! Whereeeee
i have 130'000 miles on my 1997 mercury villager
+Antonio Pantoja. I have 201,*** on my 05 Buick lesabre look at my picture I took it at exactly 200,000
This guy is my neighbor no joke ill take a vid on my channel
Is he ever home? lol
that's not even half. can't you count?
My skoda now has 1.2 mill
Wow that's crazy. That car is sexyy
👍
3 million>1.1 million, your car isn't that impressive compared to this guy's
157 oil changes? that is once every 19,000 miles.. does not seem accurate
Paid for oil changes, my thinking is when he was young he changed it himself
My Ford pinto has 750,000
he considers drugs and alcohol hobbies??
You can't sell that!
K.... cool?
No. it's worth more.
exactley 1 mil. this has 3 mil
Volvo hasn't bought him a new one?
No chevrolet, no ford, no mopar,
He spent $500,000.00 on repairs
no my skoda is 1998
I don't think modern cars do that many without kick your wallet.
My coworker had a 2004 Volvo V70 that had 860.000 km on it.
maybe 357 oil changes, there no way he went 20k miles per oil change, i call bullshit on that! but still how they prove it has that many miles?
Kevin Rogers Read description
Kevin Rogers Also, it's not a convertible. As for proving the mileage, if he has receipts documenting the mileage at every maintenance and repair interval, then that should prove that the car has (by now) over three million not necessarily original miles, but nevertheless, over three million actual miles.
+Marshall Curtis Yes, but these old cars only go to 99,999 and clock back to 0 so it would have to have some serious documents to put it all together and figure it out. Unless he was going for the world record why would he save all these random receipts for 50 years. you know?
Proof of what?
Lol he wants $3mill forit he will be lucky to get $30,000 for it unless some guy needs the highest mileage car in the world.
is this video about religion or a mans love for his car :s
first on these nuts
I think this dude is dead now
But his car lives on...
