all good information, but the real secret to backing up along a curb...adjust your side mirror to see along the side of your vehicle and also adjust it as far down to the ground as possible. You will be able to literally see the curb - no guessing, no reference points.

when I first took my drivers test I had to redo the reversing in a straight line like four times because no one told me I was supposed to know how to do that😭😭 so I did it with absolutely no clue what I was doing

very informative video. coming here because i just failed my test in Maine (we have to do parallel parking plus straight line backing) due to this maneuver. can't take driver's ed and my ability to get practice in is limited at the moment. hoping i pass next time.

It’s connected to your scanning pattern. You should be looking at your instrument panel every 8-15 seconds & should be adjusting your speed accordingly. Cheers

Dumb question but when reversing do you always have to put one hand behind the passenger seat and the other on the wheel? I see some people who have both hands on the wheel while reversing but still looking everywhere
For me, personally, putting one hand on the seat makes it easier to turn my head around to see through the back window. I don’t know if it’s required during the test but I still did it to be safe lol
Hi Rick, the four-way flasher here is the emergency lights? In another video about backing along a curb, the left signal indicating arrow of your car can not be seen, just look like the right turn signal light.

i saw in the dmv driving test book that i have to be within 3 feet from the curb but other people and sites have said to be 6-18inch from it during the backing portion. do you happen to know which is correct for the test?
Rick will probably answer this himself soon but as someone who has watched most of his videos, I would say no. I believe only New Jersey allows you to use it.

@@smartdrivetest so I’ve been working a little on the reverse by the curb it’s going okay I just have issues with the correction of the wheel not bad which I barely have practice parking but it’s getting better
What am I suppose to be looking at to focus on while looking out the back window if I can't really use side or rearview mirrors to often? I can't see the curb on the street. But I do, do better on hills because I can see the whole road. And are we allowed to lift up a bit from the driver's seat while reversing or do I have to stay completely sitting down? If you were building a house, would you just use a hammer and some nails? No, you'd use a level and a square too. Use all your tools to keep both yourself and other safe when you're reversing. All the best, Cheers Rick

update: i failed my first time because of an unprotected left turn and i didn’t know what to do but i passed my second time !!

can you adjust your mirror when asked to do reverse park near the curb during the test or will you get marked down or automatically fail?
