So nice to hear more about Dan Blocker,my nominee for most underrated actor..he took a cliché role, the ''big dumb ox'',and made him(along with the writers) a real living, breathing memorable character.. We laugh ,cry and everything in between, his range was outstanding...perhaps if Bonanza had not been so successful, Dan would have had time for more opportunities in films before his untimely death, which when it happened, felt to me,a kid@13,as if I had in some ways lost a friend..and of course, his work lives on.

I had a friend (passed away a few months ago) who did several Skelton shows over the years and told the same story. He had to keep one eye on Red and the other on the director, constantly mouthing "Now?" to him. He always knew the script, but that didn't mean a whole lot when it was time to roll the cameras.
    Nice interview, Rob!

I loved it when he would horse around in frequent sketches with Reta Shaw, who tried real hard to stare him down ,which made Red try even harder to crack her up..

    • @georgesenda1952

Red also would break the 4th wall a lot & would talk to the audience particularly when he or someone would forget their lines and sometimes he would break himself up & start laughing so hard that the other actors would also break up.
As a child my parents watched him every week but I didn’t appreciate him until I grew up & watched his show episodes on You Tube.
I did see his movies and enjoyedthem.

A new material release is always nice to see. I remember his face from one off movie and TV shows but the series didn't show where I grew up in Western Canada. Only had one channel for most of the the late fifties and early early sixties. As always a great interview with another actor who can tell stories, from the point of view of a child actor. For a Zoom interview you managed to bring a real sense of intimacy and immediacy that most Zoom interviews can't achieve. A ton of great observations and memories that can only happen on AWOW and complete my Sunday mornings.

Dennis is right about Red, who was always ad libbing on his show. Which for Red was probably his way of keeping it fresh with a slightly dangerous element of spontaneity most other tightly scripted shows lacked. Which naturally kept the other actors loose and on their toes, encouraging the more clever of them to do some ad libbing of their own.
The classic Vincent Price ad lib in the Da Vinci skit you included in one of your shows, Rob, being a great example.

In defense of Michael Landon, I read an article from a guy who later became a journalist about how as a kid, he and his parents had won as a contest prize, a visit to the Bonanza set with lunch on a break during shooting with all the actors. And how thrilled he was in anticipation of actually meeting his tv heroes, Hoss, Adam, Pa Cartwright and Little Joe. Only to have his little boy dream shattered by Pernell Robert's rudeness and obvious resentment at having these bothersome strangers intruding upon his workplace.
Bright side for the brought to the verge of tears kid? Was Michael Landon's and Dan Blocker's coming to the rescue in true Hollywood hero style to save the disastrous day with their uncommon friendliness, obviously making a very special effort (while their jerk of a co worker grumbled) to make the boy and his family feel welcome, personally seeing to it that he and his folks had a good time.

I love westerns. They ought to bring them back. They are greatly missed. What happened to Alec Baldwin was an accident. You surely don’t think or anybody would think that he wanted to kill halya. Such a great cinematographer. Things happen on sets. I don’t remember any accidents on other westerns but I am sure that things did happen and maybe they figured there was no need to be informed about what was happening on sets. I feel for Alec though. I think the woman who handled the guns and ammunition should be responsible for what happened. Not Alec. I mean he didn’t know she had put real bullets in the gun. I wonder if somebody he did not get along with him set him up to kill halya. It makes me nuts thinking about it. Why were real bullets even on the set? They shouldn’t have to even be there. If they charge him with murder that’s a travesty. But I loved all westerns. I wish they would show all of them but there is not enough time in the day to show them all. I want them to show new westerns too. I know they filmed paint your wagon on the rogue river here in oregon. I know Clint Eastwood didn’t like the singing in it. But I wonder why they put singing into shows unless they really need it. I would rather just see shoot outs. Fight scenes. Horse tricks. Horse riding. All things western. That’s why I enjoy ghost towns of the west. Laramie is a great show. I never get tired of it

Michael Landon was hardly a prima donna but he was very young when they made "The Gunmen" . By the time the show was over he was a totally different person - by all accounts. And he became quite the jokester himself!! As is well documented, cast and crew as well as many guest stars loved working with him . And as much as I loved Hoss and Dan Blocker's portrayal, I disagree with your statement that he was the heart of the show. The Cartwright family was the heart of the show. That's the reason the show failed after he died - because Pa and Joe did not really constitute the family we were used to watching, despite adding a new son, dandy Candy and a new young cowboy. If it had been ML that died instead of Blocker the show would still have failed. BTW - I enjoy your interviews!
