In the U.S. there is a company called BudK. Years ago I bought a Kukri for about $15 USD. Full sized with 1/4" spine and leather & wood sheath, Full Tang Carbon Steel. Made in India. What a Beast. It didn't come very sharp, but I took care of that. I liked it so much that I bought a 2nd one. I think they started carrying them again somewhere in the $20 range. So worth it. I'm not sure if they ship to Austria though. LOL!
I've got several BudK kukris, but they are stainless steel, not high carbon steel. Very hard to put a sharp edge on, but by same means, they are nearly indestructible, btw, far and away my favorite chopper is the large ("royal") cold steel kukri machete, I can hack 2" and sometimes 3" fresh (green) oak branches in a single whack. In complete contrast to the BudK stainless steel, the machete steel is high carbon but slightly soft... which is perfect, I can put a sharp edge on it with a file in seconds. It is a thin blade, not suitable for torture testing. Although I have a good selection of both real Nepal kukris, American style kukris, and Cold Steel machete kukris, I do not torture any of them... for dried wood I use a folding Silky style saw, and a hatchet or axe for splitting The cold steel royal kukri machete is long with a wickedly sharp point - if you are going to use it for chopping closely spaced vines and dense vegetation, beware of that point, or even grind it off, it is really blood-thirsty and if caught in vines can swing back and poke you!
Awesome video! I like to see these extreme cases of torture of steel, gives you a good idea on the limits. I just got a Condor K-tack Kukri.. what a piece of crap, the knife chipped 3 times while taking out a small branch. So far, my K-bar Kurki has held up after 10 years of use. No issues with it
It's so sad to see this new company taking over Cold Steel and all their products having the steel quality downgraded and the prices increased. It's the kind of thing Lynn Thompson said wouldn't happen.
I believe Lynn is far from giving a crap anymore. He has his stash of the older CS blades that will last him the rest of his life. It just pisses me off, that ALL OF US, who supported his company since the beginning, now have to settle for flea-market quality knives, or don't buy ANYTHING from the "NEW COLD STEEL"
Not necessarily the case, there is no reason to suspect a downgrade of production quality from this test. Apparently Cold Steel started production on these before the buyout. They have made many products with 420HC in the past (I have a 9" Oyabun in 420HC) and when you set up to produce a knife at a given factory you're going to have a lot of fixed costs according to the production standards you demand. If they have high QC standards that comes at a cost no matter what steel they use. This blade has very good edge geometry and is probably hardened for good edge retention, which is all going to result in worse durability. "THE PROBLEM" is a mis-match of steel and knife design, they could have used a much nicer steel with no impact on the price, AUS-6 or 13C27 would be my choice, but Lynn said they were having problems sourcing enough good steel and the 4034SS supplier was one of the first that came up who could fulfill their demands for quantity and consistency. Arguably this was the wrong choice, but that doesn't make this a low quality knife, it's just unfortunate.

Overall I'm not surprised at the results, and it's hard to say whether Cold Steel should change very much with the design. First of all Cold Steel loves to grind their blades thin for good cutting performance, that's a feature you need for stabbing flesh, arguably the intended purpose for everything they sell. You're never going to have good edge durability with that thin edge. Historically Cold Steel runs their heat treat near maximum hardness and gets great edge retention, however in a Kukri it could be argued this blade inherently demands some compromise from hardness for the sake of durability, I wouldn't expect it to perform significantly better but tempering the steel down to RC57 might just get you a few extra whacks on the stone and maybe a little less edge breakouts. And again the choice of a lower hardness temper gives it worse performance on ropes and soft targets, always a trade of performance attributes. The durability here was very much not amazing, but it did perform better than the 9" Tanto so at least relative to other large Cold Steel blades you could say this is good. The biggest complaint is of course the price, no-one else in the industry would charge this much for a blade out of this steel, and given how much effort does go into production (full height flat grind with a very nice thin edge) they should have just used AUS-6 or 13C27 for the same price.

The kukri never lies.😅 It's so shiny and broad blade, it's good for ladies used not only as wicked weapon, but also as mirror to check for beauty! 🦊💋💄💅🪒👗👠💍 Thats why it's so expensive 2 in 1 😅
I still feel kind of bad watching this test because that's a beautiful full flat grind, this knife really would cut through trees brilliantly (though they probably should be using 12C27, but I digress), and making an even grind on a broad blade like that is not easy. Of course the point of destructive testing is not to ask what the knife was made for, only to find out how it reacts to the test.
@@joex Absolutely this knife is also vastly overpriced for what it is now, but I wouldn't change the durability, it just needs better blade steel to justify the price. Cutting ability and durability are directly opposing attributes, the hardness that makes the edge chip also makes it hold an edge better, the thin tip that breaks easily is also best for slicing. Arguably, they just need to drop the price of the 3V version to what they're charging for 4034SS right now.
I’m looking forward to the cold steel fan boys chiming in to inform us that this tool was made to chop wood, not cement or steel. Some people just don’t understand that all knives are subjected to roughly the same tests and the outcomes are what they are.
Haha fyi on a Kukri the most cutting power is the skinny part right at the beginning of the curve that way as you draw through the chop to forces the belly to cut through 🇺🇸👍❤️💯 sir it looks like so much fun jumping in the pond yeah get some🤪
14:27 I feel like this is one of the first blades to actually break at the hilt, arguably that means the transition from handle to blade is under-developed. Especially when you see how carefully the tang was designed, they went to great lengths to make sure the tang doesn't break, but then overlooked the transition to the blade grind.
@@joex Thanks for pointing that out. Very interesting to see Condor 1075 didn't last long at all, especially when we should expect Condor to have a soft temper.
Shooting the package was really cool my friend. You have proofed that the Kukri Machetes from cold steel for 50 Euros are much better than this stuff for over 300 Euros. This Kukri Plus performed really bad. The structure inside did not look homogeneous and the heat treatment was not good.

I have many very deep cuts on my hands from my choice of careers .and it's caused a lot of nerve damage. if I can save a fellow knife enthusiast some nerve damage I will gladly tell you to get a pair of cut proof gloves.
Everything can be damaged, destroyed. But this is quite expensive and should have lasted considerably longer. If the steel is like this or slightly different, it is not so important. The factory (blacksmith) processing is always decisive! So the bottom line is why pay so much and get so little? I would rather invest in ordinary Indian, Nepali production, where it is made of spring steel. And in addition, he will have a bunch of children for food and development. Rather than stuffing money to the proud and rich. Thank you for a very good video!
Kukris are weapons. I never expected them to cut trees or cars, but expect them to cleave flesh better than a bowie, deeper than a sword, and stab very well. Surprised that it didnt hold up as well as the Nepali kukri for sure, but woukd choose this before the Nepali any day

I still feel kind of bad watching this test because that's a beautiful full flat grind, this knife really would cut through trees brilliantly (though they probably should be using 12C27, but I digress), and making an even grind on a broad blade like that is not easy.
Of course the point of destructive testing is not to ask what the knife was made for, only to find out how it reacts to the test.
for that price it should take some more!
@@joex
Absolutely this knife is also vastly overpriced for what it is now, but I wouldn't change the durability, it just needs better blade steel to justify the price.
Cutting ability and durability are directly opposing attributes, the hardness that makes the edge chip also makes it hold an edge better, the thin tip that breaks easily is also best for slicing.
Arguably, they just need to drop the price of the 3V version to what they're charging for 4034SS right now.
Almost bought this shit, thanks Joe!
u are welcome!
Shame. Didn’t even make it to the iron rod. I didn’t think anything could be more brittle than Tops’ 1095.
Thanks for exposing this fraud.
u are welcome!
Tops comparison is good!
9:41 a good strop should get that edge like new again 😄
for sure!
I’m looking forward to the cold steel fan boys chiming in to inform us that this tool was made to chop wood, not cement or steel. Some people just don’t understand that all knives are subjected to roughly the same tests and the outcomes are what they are.
yeah, i wait for that too!!! Fanboy Tears!
Or banana tree wood feather sticks 😂🍻
It may be a “choppa” but it’s not a “stabbar” 😂😂😂, it was nice of you to add your own custom serrations
yeah, thanks!
@@joex what do you think about testing throwing knives by Cold steel ?
bad idea or...
@@alexbergmann2817 did it
@@joex ok...I have to find it then
Haha fyi on a Kukri the most cutting power is the skinny part right at the beginning of the curve that way as you draw through the chop to forces the belly to cut through 🇺🇸👍❤️💯 sir it looks like so much fun jumping in the pond yeah get some🤪
cool!
With that chopping joe - you will get one massive crab arm 💪 that was one of the coolest sounding ringing when it broke btw 🎉
yeah, thanks, i like this sound too!!!
That 4034 is absolute dog shit. Its not even a high carbon steel. Pretty sad to see it on such an iconic model.
it is!
Привет. Испытание на ржавчину ))) как всегда прикольно! Да и всё остальное радует глаз...
thanks!
Get’em Joe x!
yes!
I don't that it is a proper full tang knife more like a large rat tail tang
the COndor Kukri was similar!
@@joex Thanks for pointing that out.
Very interesting to see Condor 1075 didn't last long at all, especially when we should expect Condor to have a soft temper.
and now imagine, grandma is taking that walk, every single time and finds it quite beautiful and the tip was pulverized.
grandma is dead!
👍
yes!
❤❤❤
Shooting the package was really cool my friend. You have proofed that the Kukri Machetes from cold steel for 50 Euros are much better than this stuff for over 300 Euros. This Kukri Plus performed really bad. The structure inside did not look homogeneous and the heat treatment was not good.
yes the cheaper ones are much better!!!! cheers!
Great video and nothing I don´t expect from the steel. The 3V version will be very interesting to compare in your tests, but I understand it is TOO expensive, so I can just imagine (I wouldn´t try my own 3V if I would have one, due to price;-) ). Have a great time. FM
The CPM-3V steel that Cold Steel uses is nowhere near as good as claimed. Look at the other JOE X tests with Cold Steel blades in this steel: overpriced and overrated.
yeah, but that costs 600 Euro!!!!
@@joex That´s what I said - TOO expensive;-) FM
@@ludoA.K.A Probably you are right about the CS´s 3V which is a shame:-( I own some CS´s 3V blades - all Warcraft Tantos and Magnum 9 in 3V, absolutely fine for my tests and use, but what I have seen on YT, they should do better work with the steel. Have a great time. FM
Totally agree, the price is too high, arguably this is just the result of high quality control though, in which case it was just really unfortunate that they chose this steel.
Impressive destruction ethics. Taking retired Austrian cars to a new level of retirement....
I eyeballed the CS Kukri for years but cannot and never will justify spending 500+ euro on it.
@joeX ever thought of endurance testing one of the CS swords?
dont have one yet, maybe later!
@@joexThe Grosses Messer... would be utterly satisfying watching it being destroyed by an expert of Messer destruction 😆
@@njdpdv
I wonder how one of those houge knives would hold up, could it compete with 4 max scout in AUS10A.
yeah interesting!
Hi joe, great film, which machete is strongest? Maybe cold steel jungle?
check my vids!!!
Take care,
awesome!!! thanks!!!
the brick really ate that remaining edge away very fast, i knew it would not perform good but that was just disappointing
thank you for showing us how shit this blade is JOE X
u are welcome!
👏👏👏 excelente trabajo amigo.
gracias!
😎👍
The stainless steel model is for collectors, high carbon for users. Same thing with their katanas.
ok, thanks for the intel!
medium carbon steels 1055-1070
You know them horror movies when the killer comes to the campsite for dinner, then turns nasty? Imagine introducing him to this!😦
for that i have a gun!
@@joex Luckyyou 😄. In Australia cant carry a Glock (14 years in prison). Only rifle if camping and in certain spots 🤥
Did pretty good considering the steel. Just wish the price was much cheaper.
worth 50 €
It doesn't "Stick" ............man! I want my money back, luke warm steel. I meant cold steel.😁
stick T tang......
@@joex 👍
nice one dude.. can you do those test on aitor comando please?
thanks!
I like this kukri
cool!
13:44 Very interesting to note that the Cold Steel 4034SS Kukri lasted WAY longer than the Condor 1075 Kukri: ua-cam.com/video/NMW-6yjzxzQ/v-deo.html
Cold Steel got 46 spine whacks, Condor only got 7!
Big blades are very hard to make durable enough for impacts.
Interesting note Pal 😎
I got two of the Cold Steel O1 tool steel
Gurkha Kukri knives and two Condor Heavy Duty Kukri knives also 😊
both are shit!
but u might be right!
What a shitty Kukri for that amount of money!
Thank you for testing and warning us, amigo ❤️🍻
We don‘t need show for customer tests with meat hanging down the ceiling … we need VW German steel and El Bricko tests! 🍻
yeah really bad!
Would like to see the Becker BK21 take the test.
me too!
I want one of these, even though you destroyed it,, 🤣🤣👍👍
ok, cool!
@@joex Nice idea - to get shades of blades destroyed by Joe X! I am very interested in!😜
If only there were cheap Busee combat Nuclear meltdown fusion battle Mistress knifes around for testings, that .2775 (7mm) blade would give an epic workout. That old destruction video i think is gone, it was the most impressive knife id ever seen which ever model Mistress the guy tested many years back, I think he wore the hockey mask and never spoke.
would be awesome for sure!
I just started watching your videos instantly subscribe. Can you test a condor king kukri?
cool, and welcome!
Joe x do you use cut proof gloves. a lot of HVAC guys use them in the states. You might want to invest in a pair. I have many very deep cuts on my hands from my choice of careers .and it's caused a lot of nerve damage. if I can save a fellow knife enthusiast some nerve damage I will gladly tell you to get a pair of cut proof gloves.
no i dont!
I'm glad someone tested it so I know what not to do 😂
yeah! thats what i am her for!
14:26 that made me laugh 😂
cool!
Can you tested a Ka bar bk18?
maybe
maybe
You should test that Kukri in O-1 steel it will perform much much better
good idea!
I like my kukuri it's the lower steel. I paid 45 dollars made in Africa I think. Mine is tough haven't broke my yet.
cool!
I have the China version, think it was 20 dollars at a market. looks the same except for the sheath is all material not plastic.
maybe it performs better too!
Thank you for a very good video!
u are welcome brother!
I know these weren't going to be perfect, but it does seem kinda brittle. Good to know.
yeah, it breaks a bit easy!
Kukris are weapons. I never expected them to cut trees or cars, but expect them to cleave flesh better than a bowie, deeper than a sword, and stab very well. Surprised that it didnt hold up as well as the Nepali kukri for sure, but woukd choose this before the Nepali any day
this one is overpriced! GSM style!
Joe, could you please test the CRKT Kangee T-Hawk? The full metal one. It's advertised as really being able to take a beating. I'm really curious about it.
nope!
Can u please do a destruction test on a cold steel katana i just bought one and i wanna see how much damage it can take,, you should make a sword destruction testing series too
nope!
4:16 lol😍
yes!
@@joex i wish cs just start selling model T

Ja danke
Cold Steel gettin that work , where's Jimislash and where's Stickman they need to see this video, so they can learn a little somefinn somefinn about real knife testing. 😎🐊🐊🐊
yeah!
Kukri is a farmer's tool, and a fighters knife from Nepal. Not made to chop cars and rocks
of course!
My problem with the new coldsteel is calling these 4034 steel knives budget. Then asking premium prices. When your get very low cost steel.
4034 is close to 420 not 420hc. 4034 has a rockwell of 55.
Im not against low costs steels. Im against charging ridiculous prices for a $25 knife.
yeah budget my arse Cold Steel!
