- Seymour Duncan pickup comparison-Slash set vs Alnico Pro II. Which set sounds better you think?
No post EQ or anything. Just the raw unprocessed tone from guitar and amp.
And no editing playing wise.
Alnico 2 Pro has that ‘Appetite’ & ‘Illusion’ sound. The Slash Set sounds more like the Miles Kennedy project.
Weve been tricked by that fucking product the main idea is custom gibson les paul guitar with alnico II pro than pay much money for that shit once more fuck gibson lespaul slash signature
You on the money there, I totally agree.
Paul Flemming I like both versions of the SLASH tone so I know the difference between the two 👍🏽
This is such an accurate statement. For THE Slash tone, Alnico 2 Pro is the way. Also they had much tighter and cutting palm mutes, which is also signature to the Gn'R sound. They can get more harsh in the top end, but dial it right with your amp and IMO results will be much better with the A2P than Slash signature
Makes sense, most of the time signature gear is not the sound you hear on classic records but rather the current sound they use on tour. One of my main gripes with signature gear.
Nice comparison! I think I prefer the Slash pickups for the extra mids.
The Slash pups Def has a little more Treble, the reg Alnico Pro II has a little less presents
@@mannyfragoza9652 They have nearly identical tonal characteristics. The Slash pickups have slightly more output - that's the biggest difference.
And not so much low end
1. Both of these pickups sound awesome
2. This guy can fucking play 🤘
The Slash set has more "meat & potatoes", but the Alnico II set has more clarity.
I like the A2 Pros better, wasn't really expecting that! Little more top end clarity.
Shit, they're very close. I think it just comes down to taste. Not even sure which I prefer, based solely on this video.
Slightly different output and mids due to the few extra wraps. His are just modified versions of these. He didnt want radically different, just a few adjustments, so the overall character is supposed to be the same.
You can coil split the aph1, not the slash set
The Alnico Pro II sounds better when it's just the guitar, but in a mix the Slash pickups cut through much better with because of the tighter more focused midrange
Right on but the Slash pu's don't need to be in the neck position/ just the lead ....
@@paradox7743 you are funny 🤣
Slash plays tons of neck humbuckers solos and Rythmn 🤷🏻♀️
The Alnico's have a rawer sound - I'm hearing more contrast between the lows and highs and less mid, heavier on the bass. Slash sound more balanced. I think it would depend on the song but my preference is for the Slash set, even though I'm a bassist! :) I love the tone on the high end on the Slash set. Alnico's have a really harsh upper end.
Thank you for not trying to sound like Slash, and thank you for the comparison.
He totally played slash inspired riffs and lead licks here, what you on about. Was really good tho🤘🏻
@@Mrdude30 I said “sound like”, not “play like”.
Well he plays and sounds alot like slash here, everything. Listen to slash's solo albums. Lol @@lukehenderson436
The slash pickups seem to have a bit more of a midrange prescence
To my ears the Alnico Pro II sounded better when playing chords... you could clearly hear every note in the chords, yet the chords sounded a bit muddy with the Slash pups... yet the Slash pups sounded better with the single note stuff... need a pup that's a combo of both !!! Overall though i'd choose the Alnico Pro II as when playing songs you mostly play chords.
Go for the 59's set, there's your combo
Whaaat ever.... roll the dice. APH-1b sounds more like the Gn’R records to me. “Slash” pickups sound like the cleaned-up, showered and shaved version. I’ll take the more-raw-sounding APH-1 an extra $20 in my pocket. If I want more top end definition, I’ll adjust the screws in the pickup to protrude more. 🖖
Absolutely THIS!!! the polepieces are the key to get the best tone you may produce from your pickups; angled and calibrated
I dig the Slash set, but the AP 2 Pro bridge has a clarity about it that really speaks to me. The neck for that set is good, but I’d probably pair the bridge pickup with a Duncan Jazz in the neck or something. Anyways, killer demo 🤘🏼
Both sound great but the alnico ii's sound more like that classic GnR sound than the Slash pickups to my ear.
Warren Anthony Brady the Slash set is what he used in the studio and the IIs are what he used live
Dan Gerving how does that work? I mean, he mostly used one guitar in the studio (at least in the 80s) which had the Alnico Pro II pus inside, cause the slash pickups were not built yet?!
Roman Panchyrz You would be correct.
@@romanp.4319 The Alnico II Pros today were made a bit different in the 80s. Slash's signature pickups are made to those specs. They're based off the pair he had in his original Derrig Gibson replica.
@@sleepnaught nope. Go on the Seymour Duncan discussion board. A rep from them say that isn’t so. His GUITAR sounded different then any others he had so they tweaked the pickup to make his others sound similar.
I've got a Gibson Les Paul Studio with a Dimarzio SD in the bridge, and just ordered a Alnico 2 pro Slash for the neck.
Alnico Pro II (APH-1)
Gibson + Seymour Duncan + Good player = kickA$$ sound !
I think Slash set has more heavy sound then alnico pro 2
But it’s actually very close to each other
That’s interesting, I heard the opposite. Think I preferred the slash pickups, but then I’m a 80’s kid so impressionable I guess.
I used this video to decide what pickups I wanted to put in one of my LP's... The Slash set just sounds more put together and tighter almost... I ended up going with a slash in the bridge and Pro II in the neck.. Best of both worlds
I ended up with Alnico Pro ll in the bridge and Slash in the neck :P
Pointless video. Don’t waste you money on Seymour Duncan Slash pickups. He actually used Gibson Burstbucker 1 and 2
Burstbucker 1 and 2 came out early 90's. And it's well documented that he used Alnico Pro 2 in his fake Les Paul for Appetite For Destruction.
But.....I think the BB1 and 2 are very similar to both the APH and Slash signature.
Slash's sound more growly to me. : )
Great comparison...appreciate you doing this. both sound great, but I like the Alnico 2 sound better. Slash set def has more growl, but the definition on that Mr, Brownstone riff sold me. Sounds more like AFD era.
Firstly, nice legato. Really nice. If you want slash youd just go the alnico.
helikon tex thanks!
Great demo. Even though I'll still buy the Slash set because it has Slash's name on it, in reality there is a tiny difference between the two. A slight bump on amp treble will make your AP2 into AP2 Slash... and in the mix its just irrelevant
can't go wrong with Slash, he knows tone.
The Slash pickups sound like a wax potted version of the Alnico II's, they're basically the same but the Slash ones lose some of the outer halo of crunch. Well played by the way, usually demo's are 50 notes with no tune! lol
Slash neck, Alnico Pro II bridge would be my choice. I prefer the Gibson pickups that came on my old Les Paul R57 though.
Your R7 probably has '57 Classics.
I think I like the Slash bridge and the AP2 neck.
The slash!!! But just because they sound more like slash 😄
There's a noticeable but subtle output difference between the two. Same tone but a little more compression with the slash set. Awesome pickups if you want a *low* output pickup that's just very well done and very versatile
What do you think of putting an alnico bridge pickup on a epiphone les paul jr?
That should work well.
I prefer the Alnico Pro II sound in the neck. I have Alnico Pro II both on my neck and bridge and I'm thinking of swapping the bridge for the Slash PU. But Alnico Pro II on neck is just that famous Slash neck tone right on the money... Love it. And for bridge just for my personal use I might want a slightly hotter and thicker sounding one than the APII, so let's see if the Slash one will do the trick.
If there were a fight between the Slash set and the Alnico Pro II, the Slash set would go home in an ambulance...
Bought 2 sets of Slash pups, thought first set had to be bad pair, but 2nd ones sounded fizzy, mid bloated, tapered highs, lacking clarity and no bite with gain. Tried them in 5 guitars and all 4 tube amps and 3 s.s. amps. Too warm, lacking openness and no treble bite. Got rid of them.
Yep, added a set in my Standard and never looked back.... so good, I'm going to get a bridge Slash for my Custom.
Geoff Sweet I’m wanting to added them to my standard as well. After I get new pots American prs pots
alnico II,s have more low end girth (bigger balls)
And higher highs/sparkle.
the alnico pro sounds muffled compared to slash
That's the description I was looking for! 👍
Maybe it's fixable by tweaking the poles?
Screw the pickups. This dude is ripping it up. Awesome!!!
I just installed them in my guitar. They sound amazing!! Important piece of information: they come with just one wire (live), braided with a shield (ground), please look up the schematics for that because they are not included.
That's great ! It makes them so easy to install !
I hear the Slash version having a little more output. Same eq curve to my ears, just an output difference. They're both good options.
Wish I had a 2nd guitar to use the Slash set for.
Both of them are the same, except Slash’s pickups only have the two required wires. No added l ones for the options of coil tapping/splitting or phase switching.
Slash set sound clear to me
Modern or 50s wiring?
I prefer alnico pro 2 than slash version. But slash himself play without slash version... 😅
50s wiring
@@TerjiSkibens nice 😉
Damn, after hearing the Mr. Brownstone riff, I think I prefer the originals EVER so slightly.
Slash claims to have never collaborated with Seymour Duncan on the pickups bearing his name. So for that reason I would go with the original wind.
Yellow Eagle but yet they bear his caricature and signature on the back? That’s impossible.
He uses them in his own guitars, so I don’t think he never collaborated with them
I just can't tell the difference. Both are awesome.
The Alnico 2 Pro sounds really badass
Alnico Pro II sounded better to me. When you switched over to them it's almost like the sound became three dimensional. All in all though, they are very close. Thanks for this!!
This!!! The 3D effect in the Alnico ii pro is amazing and not in the Slash model. Alnico ii pro spits harmonics all over the air, the Slash model is more unidimensional and foucused. Both are great anyway...
2 Great pick up but the Alnico Pro 2 have more Punchy and Brillance !!!!
Alnico 2 pro’s sound is powerful for me!!!!! Great video! Thanks!
Both sound very similar. But, if you do have an instrument capable of coil splitting, the option MUST be the "NOT-Slash" pickups set that is full split wiring compatible.
what are you saying ? you can NOT coil tap the Slash Pickups? Thanks
@@tootory9506 Yep. Contact Seymour Duncan. They have a similar kit that allows coil-splitting but without the "slash signature" on it.
Carlos M ok cool! thanks a lot!
I was surprised that I like Alnico Pro 2 set more. You can hear different notes more clear
I want to know how the bridge tone knob is set
Bridge tone knob is all the way up.
When you played Mr. Brownstone, Alnico 2 Pro won.
...lower pickup output needs more volume or gain from amp hence a better sound......perhaps...
Great comparison, but also amazing playing dude!
Yes there’s definitely more mids in the Slash pups as everyone has noted. I’m thinking if the guy dialed up the mid on his amp with the Alnico II Pros they would sound very close to the Slash’s. Maybe not as dark?
Great playing and tone!
I prefer Slash bridge but the neck can't decide... Great video 😎
I've gone with an Alnico Pro in the bridge and a vintage spec'd 59 in the neck! Rawks :D
Good job. Finally more clarity with the ol'good APH-1. I''d keep the Pro II for the neck (versatility) and maybe the Slash one for the bridge for this big bite.
The problem is not your guitar, it is you, the player l. 😅
Just to be sure, is the other one the APH-1B4C Model? Its the only one i can find on thomann besides the slash model that has the name alnico 2 pro in the description
Yes, APH-1B4C is the Alnico pro ll bridge model. The neck model APH-1N4C is also available on Thomann.
@@TerjiSkibens Nice! I‘m looking to change out the BB3 on my „new“ 2010 Traditional Pro but didnt want to loose the coil tap on the bridge. So the Alnico 2 Pro might be just the right thing with its 4 wires! What are your thoughts on the BB3 or in general burstbuckers? Thank!
Slah pups is tighter but the alnico 2 seems to have more grit
I thought you played ESP guitars(last time I saw you play live you did anyway), lovely Les Paul btw!!!
pickups are ok, but you need more tattoos...
I like the modded versions, but the original ap1 and ap2 pups were dynamite to start with. Slash really didnt have to change much to dial them to his taste for that very reason.
Both sound Great . Very versatile pickups
Are Alnico II Pro™ HB contents coil split?
Is that a Gibson Les Paul Traditional 2017?
Yes it is.
👍🇺🇸❤SLASH SET.........BY FAR !!!!!!!
Oh thank god lol I just ordered the Slash 2.0s so I’m even more excited. The original [appetite] sound fantastic though. I might be wrong but I think that’s the sound my SG will emulate more of. The reason I got the 2.0s is because again I’m playing with an SG. The thinner body and less weight overall might not work for the APH 2. I worried they’d sound too thin essentially.
Nice Comparison glad I watched im getting a set of Slash pickups for one of my Jacksons both sets sound great but somerhing about those Slash pickups just have a little more of what im looking for Tone wise!!
I don’t think they sound like the Appetite for destruction album . I’ve heard the classic 57’s sound more authentic. That’s the slash tone I fell in love with. Maybe the pickups where unpotted because it was a 59 copy.
aph-1 are more GNR aph-2 are more Slash Solo
Hi, what are you playing in the beginning of the comparison? (first part) Have tabs or song name? I am buying my first humbuckers soon, need to learn some "fat" tabs :)
Do you have potentiometer 300k or 500k?
500k.
Tell me if I'm wrong. The slash pickup is very simular to the APH-1 Alnico II Pro but has more winds to make it a little more higher output.?? And yes the pro 2 has more clarity but not as much grunt.
Great pickups. My favorite Duncan of all is a tie between the Custom SH-5 ceramic and the Custom Custom SH-11 alnico 2. Both are superb.
The Pro lls. Slashes have too much treble for my taste. Pro lls a bit more mid range and smoother.
In theory, it should be the other way around. That's how I hear the difference. The stronger mids of the Slash set bring down the emphasis of the lows and the highs....slightly.
Slash ALL day long. Wow... I didn't think there was that much difference TBH. Great comparison. There's a great clarity to the Slash set
The simple truth is The Alinco II is great for the heavy gauge strings but the Slash are better for soloing n have a nice mid section. I would put the Burstbucker on the neck and the Slash in the bridge for solo's. best of both worlds. Killer chops...
Maybe I’ll try a hybrid; slash bridge and alnico 2 neck?! I’m favoring the Alnico 2 pro in this video
Seymour Duncan Slash pickups 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
To my ears the Slash set has much better note articulation when playing a chord. The notes ring out better
Best comparison
They sound nice. Just got a used Epi Standard, and it might deserve some of these. Can't really tell much difference. I can't go fast like you. Brain wants to, fingers just won't cooperate.
You saved me from buying a slash gold top. they come with APH-1s and I don't wanna spend that kinda money and not love my pups
Alnico Pro II.
I've seen some complaints about the tinniness on the Slash bridge pickups; are you dropping the tone knob down some on the bridge, or is it wide open? This is the second video where I'm not hearing the issue.
They´re both good, the only thing that jumped to me was your low E string going out of tune every time you picked aggresively. Maybe a heavier gauge will be better suited to your playing style?
Ive got the slash aph2 on my bridge pup,do you think whats the good neck pup to put?do u think the alnico pro is good for neck
Sure, the pickups rock, sure the playing is awesome, but no comments on that fantastic Lucifurby shirt?
Personally, I prefer the Slash pickups. They sound much better to me. The Pro II's aren't as clear, imo.
Excellent music
Thanks 😘
Seems like the difference is the Slash ones are slightly overwound and have more low end and a tad more midrange. I think I like the originals better. They weren't lacking in midrange at all and they're a little more clear.
Difficult to tell much about the difference with this brutal distortion. For me they sound similar.
I go for a2 pro neck.
Also!!! I have tried both 500k and 300k volume pots with the aph-1. I definately prefer the 300k vol pots. That is also what are in Slash’s guitar..btw
Why 300k? 🤔 I'm curious
Gabriel Graham 300k pots allow less of the frequency spectrum to pass from the pickups to the amplifier. The tone has less high end bite for example. IMO it sounds more ‘analog’... smoother.
The ALNICO II's aren't really high output, so the "500k pot for humbuckers" thing is a bit overkill. The 300k pots let the big pup "breathe" a little more, but 250k pots are fine if you're not running 2 hb's. I run an HSS setup with the Slash, and pro II singles, and honestly couldn't be happier.
@@deangullberry5148 500k is considered vintage-correct for lower output HB pickups.
When you say "definitely," do you hear an "A" in the word? Sound it out. No? That's right, because there isn't one in there.
What's your amp?
Hear the low growl on the alnico11 pro
And the sparkle up top.
