Sonic Frontiers (PC) - Shibuya Terrain Import

- Pretty much what the title says, it's an import of Shibuya from Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games: Tokyo 2020 to Sonic Frontiers. It's very rough right now (largely due to the collision) but I hope to eventually get that fixed up.
Getting the terrain meshes to actually show up was a bit tedious, but I got used to it pretty quickly. @Knuxfan24 had made a tool that lets you convert ".pcmodel" files (basically how the game stores it's terrain instances), which he had also used for his Ninjabread Land terrain import.

This tool was also used to get the skybox mesh to show up. Speaking of that, I had to increase the exposure of its texture by 2 so I could get it to (mostly) show up as intended. For the emission materials on the terrain, as well as the cubemap and GI lightmap/shadowmaps, I had to lower those by 6. And yes, Frontiers fully supports GI lightmaps/shadowmaps for terrain, but the base game almost never uses them outside of the indoor areas. I think this might actually be the first Frontiers terrain import to have GI lightmaps/shadowmaps, and a custom skybox mesh!
I had to tone the sunlight's intensity so it didn't make everything insanely bright, and I also had to use the RFL file from w5r01 (THE END boss fight's scene effect data basically) just so I could disable the SkyAtmosphere (which, believe it or not, is actually an asset from Unreal Engine 4, just formatted to work in Hedgehog Engine 2. The copyright screen on the main menu mentions this!)
Collision importing was straightforward, using @blueskythlikesclouds's BTMesh tool to get it converted from FBX to BTMesh with corresponding ".pccol" file. As you can probably tell, the collision's VERY jank right now, so I'll look into fixing it at one point.
Getting the music imported was pretty much like how I did with my Forces mods in the past. Using Skyth's SonicAudioTools, I replaced "00000_streaming" (1-1's music) and "00001_streaming" (1-1's boosting music) with "Freedom Buzz Dance" from Persona 5 Strikers. I chose this track as 1. it fits Shibuya pretty well (despite it being used in Osaka in P5S), 2. the song slaps and 3. I had previously used the track in my (currently-unreleased) Shibuya ports for SpongeBob BFBB Rehydrated and Cosmic Shake.
And I worked on this despite pulling a muscle earlier. Is it worth it? I guess so yeah. Though there's still work that needs to be done.

Yeah, the main issue with the biomes in Frontiers for me was a lack of distinct buildings and structures to explore. There were a few, but having a dense city environment would really allow the team to make some amazing structures to platform through.

This is exactly how I want to see the hub world in the next Sonic game. Just imagine exploring a whole large area of the city, parks, countryside, talking to characters, finding secrets and having fun with various gimmicks... Some people don't like hub world in Sonic just because they haven't seen a real interesting hub world yet. Adventure 1 was a pretty decent hub world for its time, but with current technology, Sonic Team can create something truly grandiose.
Sonic '06 didn't have a bad one either. It was just plagued with load zones straight outta fifth gen.

I just like to point out that I love how consistently accurate Shibuya is in every game that has it, cuz I'm sitting here with the first things I'm thinking of being persona 5 strikers first dungeon when you're fighting shadows out here , and Tokyo mirage sessions hub in general lol
There's even a small segment of Jet Set Radios first level that looks like that

I didn't know about Yakuza having it though, (I don't play yakuza, that's why) The other game I was thinking of was Project Sekai: Colourful Stage, which has many different variations of Shibuya.

i'm genuinely not lying when I say that this is an example of how good a mainline sonic game could be
i've had this idea in my head in a while for things i would have for the next sonic game that i kind of wanted to share with everyone
- replace the sonic model with the type g model and even include the light blue colouring (i know people will say it doesn't make sense nowadays but changing sonic's color would give him a fresh new look and coat of paint)
- have a city area like this but have new donk city/station square like features (mario odyssey) like minigames, shops, , npcs, in a sonic sort of way
- change sonic's movement to be more of a let loose flow movement when you run fast to give the feeling of speed (think of like a shadow or like the squids in splatoon)
- bring back the railing mechanic
- have a mix between 2d style cutscenes (like the knuckles prologue or sonic cd cutscenes) and 3d cutscenes
- multiplayer in some ways
- and of course bring back the rock music we all know and love
- add the whole frontiers thing with the floating platforms and enemies all over the city, i feel like this would make the whole concept seem more appealing
- with the fishing minigame in frontiers also add more and add references to other IPs
- along with the city def bring back the whole other world thing from SA1 with mystic ruins and all those other levels
oh yeah most important thing and i know everyone will disagree but i think sonic needs to be rude and more open with what he says, it feels like nowadays he's always being overly nice or cocky and we kind of need that rude side of him back again
i know this seems odd for this one simple video but this just kind of made me want to speak out and say something. i really do feel like sonic team got the idea of what a sonic game should be but they didn't capture the feel a sonic game needs

i’ve had dreams of them eventually making a sonic movie. they made two. i had dreams of them finally making a true open world game, they made one of the best open world titles ever created. frontiers didn’t disappoint, at least sega put in some effort this time lol. bet people won’t appreciate that. nintendo won the war by being overpriced, people just care about the brand. the games are fun but MOST of the games worth buying for their platforms are usually nintendo games because third party games run like shit. what’s the point of sega losing to nintendo if nintendo only wins by sending out a few mario and pokémon games every 2 decades? i don’t get it. i haven’t seen a single interesting or popular nintendo title since covid lol, i only got a switch for odyssey and the rest of the games got finished just as quickly as the first. their last popular game that popped up on my radar was animal crossing, and i don’t even care much about that soooo. yeah they tried an open world kirby game but nobody ducking played it because we’ve been disappointed by these companies for so long we have extremely low expectations, the other side of the the fan bases just lack the brain cells to see that these companies don’t exist to keep them happy.
