Kevin Morby: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

- August 1, 2016 by BOB BOILEN • The music of Kevin Morby is fairly straightforward and acoustic for the most part, with traditional, folk-based rock at its core. The mystery and intensity lies in the lyrics. His biting song "I Have Been To The Mountain," performed here at the Tiny Desk and on his 2016 album Singing Saw, was inspired by the 2014 chokehold death of Eric Garner at the hands of a New York City police officer.
That man lived in this town
Till that pig took him down
And have you heard the sound
Of a man stop breathing, pleading?
In this set, Meg Duffy's guitar provides a strong example of the care and craft that goes into these songs - and there's even more of that on Singing Saw, the album that finally hooked me on Morby's music even after good records he'd made with the bands Woods and The Babies, as well as two other solo albums. If you're a latecomer like me, dig in here. If you're already a convert, you'll likely love the clarity of these songs and their stark arrangements.

His music reminds me of days of the past, riding bicycles through wine country in California, half buzzed, half euphoric, without a care in the world. Thanks for the memories.
Since it isn't already listed in the video, the names of the performers are:
Kevin Morby - Vocals
Meg Duffy - Guitar
Cyrus Gengras - Bass
Justin Sullivan - Drums
Thank you! Was trying to find this.
The effortless talent of this band is crazy
Effortless ? This is art dude, you think this is easy and they play it like that, but there's a lot behind.
Kevin morby's music makes me feel like buying a caravan hitting the road and travelling.
That's right 👍🏽
I feel the same. And it feels like driving through all kinds of weather and landscapes, friendly and unfriendly, but always eventually making it safe and enriched.
Go do it
Kevin morby only reminds of my Dad now. Was his favourite.
Set List:
0:00 "Cut Me Down"
3:35 "Dorothy"
8:34 "I Have Been To The Mountain"
I just love this guy so much,he’s carrying on the almost lost art of singer/ songwriters in the vein of Dylan and Lou Reed just when you think real music is dying. Can’t wait to see Morby live this April
WHO dies Again, my Friend❤
Meg is so good at guitar. the solo where the camera zooms in on her playing in "I have been to the mountain" was really impressive. Edit- 10:12
Kevin is a great, unique and consummate musician /song-writer. His old band, The Babies, is fantastic. Woods is also a rad group he's been in. At only 28, he has had quite the career/life.
No idea he was part of the "woods" ...awesome
Meg's band Hand Habits is amazing too!
This rendition of Dorothy might just be my favorite I’ve ever heard live.
The feels ❤️❤️love yourself everyone! & love everyone else! Make peace in this world ✌🏻❤️❤️
I absolutely love his music. It's so beautiful, pensive and spiritual. I'm always deeply encouraged. Thank you, NPR.
I loved it! The sound of the electric guitar at the first song is fantastic.
Fantastic sound. So fresh and new with hints of some of my favorite sounds in the last sixty years. Great job from each one in the band.
Very cool. So glad I discovered this channel. It's helped me find a lot of great music
5:58 Is anyone else in love with Meg's smooth guitar tone, and glossy playing?
she's in the zone
Meg shreds
Wow, the "trumpeteers" thing was really something.
meg is always shredding 24/7
name on time meg didnt shred
shut up meg....
Does she play on all his albums? This version is so much better than the studio recording. She adds so many nuances to this song.
Shirt and Eyes in a perfect match! Liked the guitar player in the back! Thanks, great Tiny Desk Concet!
yes!
It makes me feel good in this mood
love the way he sings! love his music! great band :-)
I always come back to this performance
Yeah, guess I'm a latecomer. Having only heard Beautiful Stranger a few months ago. And then becoming a quick convert. If you listen closely near the end of ''Cut Me Down'' you hear a tapestry of woven rhythm. Each moving sligtly askew of the others. All led forward by Kevins wonderful lyrics. He is very much a Dylanesque musician. And that is no mean feat. Hope he maintains his direction for years to come. His outside work getting guns off the street is noble. He has my full support. Thanks for sharing.
Peace.
This is stellar. Diggin Meg's tape delay tones and Kevin your Bob Dylan voice cuts nice and your diction really makes the well written lyrics easy to understand. Nice!!!
My ears are in heaven
Remember only you can prevent forest fires
lol
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA

Amazing.
Haha. The best comment on here.
I'm late to the KM party. I've guess I've had several songs on my playlists for forevs, but didn't think about the artist until I heard another song in a speakeasy bar in Saigon. I asked the bartender what music it was and now I'm hooked. Of course, it's on tiny desk concert! Thx NPR!
meg duffy rules.
Listen to Kevin a lot , especially when I am hiking in the isolation of Scottish hills , he hits the spot every time. Brilliant stuff 👍
Kevin Morby certainly has a way about him ! Brilliance.

NPR please start a Tiny Desk channel on Spotify🤗
Yesss !!!
Harlem river and Singing saw = great albums! Singing Saw showed the evolution of his music with great arrangements specially on the song Destroyer. He does sound a bit like Dylan and the Velvet Underground but its hard to do folk without being compared to Dylan. Can't wait to see what he does next. Great artist. Damien jurado is also a really good artists his album " Brothers and Sisters of the eternal sun " is amazing, its actually the second album of his trilogy about a dream of his.
Awesome! This is so good that I bet Wranglestar gonna steal this recording and use it in his videos with no info about the artist or NPR lol.
And btw, get Mikhael Paskalev on this show!
Amazing 😅
Nice music :)
I already like him
Great sound...reminds me of Bob Dylan.
Rising Star
WOW...
Hand Habits is the jam. Meg Duffy is great.
Kevin Morby rocks my socks y'all
Can anyone tell me the effect used on the Fender? Sounds awesome. What is that??
Probably analog reverb and / or analog delay - only guessing
She uses a line 6 delay, and amp reverb... maybe? Not sure about the specific reverb
❤👏
god damn meg
Dorothy is apparently written about his red jaguar guitar
Eel People and his grandma
Timber Timbre
PLEASE!!
there is one
His music would be perfect for a Sundance/indie film. Its pleasant.
Awesome music... but who the heck mixed the egg shaker right to the top of everything on the second song?
Bart Kaian it happens.... Maybe the monitors the person had mixing this where not showing the shaker so much , happens also with headphones, maybe he was with the flu, who knows...
i was hoping for a 3 minute egg shaker solo
Hes got it. Really
kev!!!!
