I go through the in depth process of replacing the spark plugs on a 2013 Honda Accord Sport 4 cylinder. I also show the location of the PCV valve and starter.
Thank you for the video. Mechanic wanted $350 to replace spark plugs and air filter. I found this and another air filter video and did both my self for a grand total of $130 in parts and 30 minutes of watching videos and 30 minutes of actual work.
Michael, seen that you're using a 9/16" socket, and I bought one myself based on your video, and as a trial put a 9/16" socket on a new NGK spark plug and seen that it's a slightly loose fit (but will do the job like your video shows). Another video on UA-cam uses a 14 mm spark plug socket and I decided to check the fit using a new spark plug. Checked using the open end of a 14mm wrench vs the open end of a 9/16" wrench and it looks like the 14mm is much better fit for these 9th gen Accord spark plugs.
Great video, just wanted to mention that when I did my plugs, I lifted out all the coils without un-clipping each wire. I was worried about breaking them like you mentioned lol.
You can also use some rubber vacuum tubing to put on the top of the plug to get it out or start it by hand to avoid cross threading. Have done this for years.
Mike- Excellent tutorial...thank you. I couldn't help but notice how clean the engine compartment is.....any special method? Would love to clean my 2014 CRV up a bit. Northern cars take such a beating.
Thank you, I create them as often as I can. I hope to have more out soon. It takes pretty much an entire day per video to shoot, edit, and upload so I have to do a lot planning to make sure I put out a decent product for the viewers. I have a few videos in the pipeline, I just need to get moving on editing.
Congrats on this video! I also shoot/edit/deploy videos and I know how time consuming it is, specially if you are perfeccionist like me :) I love your video!!!
I was able to get my set of spark plugs for my 2014 Accord Sport for $35, but I had my local dealership install them and do the valve adjustment along with it.
Hi Michael I appreciated this video it helped me greatly. I own a 2015 Honda Accord and need to replace then. Do you know anything about FCW and LDW on accord? I'm having a 03 failure on my car.
Nice job , but did you drop the spark plug into the hole and then tighten it down , giving the spark plug a chance to hit the sides of the hole and closing the gap on the plug ! also can cause a crack or chip on the porcelain..You should use a piece of hose to lower it into place or its proper tool..other people may watch your video and do the same ..thanks..
Super thankful for this. I'm poor, so I try to save money by doing simple things. Had a 1999 Honda Accord and changed plugs and wires myself. Just got a "new" used 2014 at 76,000 miles so will be doing this. I'm guessing no wires on these? Is it safe to use a can of 44K on the newer Hondas every 6 months? Thanks again!
Cynthia Yes, don’t worry about plugs until about 100k miles. No wires either, the coils sit directly above the spark plugs. At your mileage you will need to check the serpentine belt, there are several videos on replacing it. Other than that you should be good for awhile.
Gas mileage on the car so far (about 900 miles in)...first tank all freeway miles got just over 30 mpg. This tank now at about half tank, town driving getting low 20s mpg. I was thinking that might be old plugs and needs the 44K. Is there any other reason a "young" car doesn't get recommended mileage? Nothing seems to be wrong. I got the same mileage on my 1999 Accord and am wondering what else it could be? Thanks again:)
Most mechanic told me to change the O2 sensor but when I did some research it’s various things that goes with that O2 sensor. Map sensor, mass airflow sensor ; can you make a video on how to diagnose the problem ? please and thanks again...
Great content! My Honda accord for this model has 92k miles on it. I am planning to change the spark plus soon. Is it necessary to change the serpentine belt, thermostat and water pump now or for the 100k service? What are your thoughts? It would be helpful to have parts and equipment used linked in the description below. You could have them set up through affiliate links to earn you some money when purchases are made through your link.
Ebenezer Eb I just finished doing the alternator, water pump, hoses, etc. I’m going to work this weekend to get the video cut. Thanks for the feedback.
Ebenezer Eb If you drive mostly freeway you get get more miles on the cooling system as long as it’s in good condition. The serpentine belt should be replaced no later than 100k.
Wow they lasted that long??! Amazing! I think I'll hold out on those for now then. Thank you so much for you response. I really appreciate this great content and will be looking out for those videos.
I have a 2015 sport with 51k miles. I was wondering if it's safe to use different brand oil each oil change. I always use 0w20 full synthetic every 5000 miles. Is it safe to use Mobil 1 one time, then pennzoil platinum, then valvoline, etc
Yes, you can change brands as it is a high quality product. The most important thing is using the correct weight of oil along with a high capacity oil filter.
Michael Borquez , hey, so I have a 2013 Honda Accord with 110k miles, I currently just switched the spark plugs and did what you did on here. Question is, I was told if I calibrated the spark plugs with the right gap. I was left speechless, because I believe you didn't that? Or did I miss something? What did you think? Help
How do I know when it is time to change my spark plugs on my 2013 Honda Accord EX? It has about 60k miles on it but the car runs smoothly. I've heard that they should not be replaced until 100k miles, is that right?
It is all dependent on how you drive, if you drive a lot of city or short trips you should change them earlier ~75k miles otherwise 100k. This is preventive maintenance and you should not wait until the car is not running smoothly.
Good day ,was browsing through UA-cam trying to figure out how to fix my check engine light on my Honda accord 2015 sport .Went to the discount auto part they pull this up on their computer ,Got this code PO 172 fuel system Rich bank one .I know you have the same type of car ,do you have any idea what this means ?please would appreciate your help...
A magnet tool should be able to get the loose bolts out. You do not have to remove them, but careful that they do not fall out when you remove the cover.
I really don't but the last time I did a tune up, I called the local honda dealer and asked them, they told me, but I've slept since then. I usually buy plugs, rotor, cap, and wires from them, I did one tune up with autozone parts and the wires and rotor didn't last but about 20K miles. Went back to original honda parts, and never had a problem with failure again.
I discovered the spark plug well and the coil on the far left plug near the oil cap, had some oil in it? is that a problem? if so what do i need to do to fix it . I have 2014 accord with 100K on it
Ashraf Sunesara a little oil is not a huge issue, but it will require you to have the cam/valve cover seal replaced at some point. If you chose to do it, make sure to use Honda OEM seals. I've never had good luck with aftermarket seals for the caM/valve cover. I would not suggest the job to a novice, because it is easy to cause a even bigger leak if done incorrectly.
Michael Borquez but I don't see any oil leaks on the outside at all. the oil was found in the well some on the coil and some more on the spark plugs. do you think one needs to be more advanced understanding of machanics to replace cam/valve seals? thanks for help
Ashraf Sunesara Correct, there is a seal around the spark plug well that is supposed to stop oil from getting in there, unfortunately it sounds like it is failing. The problem will get worse with time. The entire cover must be removed to replace the seal.
DKP Productions thanks for the reply brother. I just asked because in the Honda Factory maintenance schedule it recommends changing the spark plugs every 30k miles. Seems a little to early to me
Thank you for the video. Mechanic wanted $350 to replace spark plugs and air filter. I found this and another air filter video and did both my self for a grand total of $130 in parts and 30 minutes of watching videos and 30 minutes of actual work.

That's because the size is 14mm. 🙂
little up date on those spark plugs, That part number has been discontinued. The new part number is 96964

Very clean engine compartment for 109K miles. Thank you for sharing.

Amazing video Michael!--great coverage of vital information pertaining to this spark plug changeover and other engine components.
You can also use some rubber vacuum tubing to put on the top of the plug to get it out or start it by hand to avoid cross threading. Have done this for years.
Hey thanks for posting this....just changed my plugs today. Super helpful 👍
Thanks for the awesome videos man, helping me doing many maintenance tasks on my Honda.

Valve adjustment? You mean they gapped the plugs?

Have a video on the plug wires too? These should be replaced together right?

anyone know of a video that shows the gap spec? ive heard 2 different sizes from different sites....but nothing on youtube.
Thanks. The dealership wanted 189.95 for my 2014 Honda Accord EX-L.
That's really not that bad of a price. The plugs are around $80 alone

do you need to replace the wires as well?
No, the coils are right on top of the plug, so no wires needed.

I have a 16 Accord ex n bought some denso iridium tt spark plugs are they not gonna be good for my car?
denso is the OEM for the 2014 accord sport, I'd imagine they are the same.

Hi any reason grease was not applied to the spark plugs?
For these NGK spark plugs they recommend not to add antiseize because it would affect the torque specs when reinstalling

Awesome
Why is it recommended to change spark plugs every 100k miles or every 7 years? My car runs like new still thanks to Costco’s high detergent gasoline!
Walnut shell blasting for the carbon build up
It's not a cam cover seal. It's called a spark plug tube seal.
