    So excited to learn more with Doornail! I’ve seen some people stuff a sock and place it in the skull as a “tongue” so it’ll show where certain bits put more pressure on the tongue or the bars!

  • @Kimberlyk12

    After I had my tongue compressed getting brackets placed for braces(it was the most horrible feeling, not being able to hardly swallow, with a sharp edge that grabbed my tounge everytime i forced a swallow) I appreciate what low ported bits can do for a horse, to have tongue freedom to swallow and breath! Swallowing directly affects their ability to breath.
    I have gone back and forth, with is metal or rubber or plastic better? I have noticed metal to be very slick and smooth, where as plastic has a drag, a little bit of a grab to it. Metal sounds hard and bad, but I think it is the one material that can be made the smoothest🤷‍♀️ Sliding metal across your skin doesn't pull at your skin at all, leather, plasic, rubber has more of a drag feeling to it, depending on the bit, its not much, so not a big deal, but why I don't mind metal, it's not about being made of a softer material necessarily for a bit, but what is the smoothest

    An addition to the horse (I can't tell if you're calling him Door Nail or Darnell but either way) would be a pool noodle for a tongue (cut in half) and a flatter pool noodle to represent the upper anatomy/soft palette. That was you can visually explain and see the difference in space available in a skull vs "real" horse's mouth. :)

    32:50 Agreed. I think that there's absolutely no need to use tools that cause discomfort, pain, or fear with horses. I don't think one should use or buy any tools that are made to cause pain/discomfort, and one shouldn't use tools that aren't meant to cause those things with the intention to cause harm/pain/discomfort.

    If anyone wants any alternatives for Rope halters try Mule tape and Brazilian Polo halters.

    I bought your bridle and ive only tried it twice, driving and riding once but honestly he really appreciated the bridle. My mans a tense and nervous boy when it comes to working and I think that came from high expectations from a young horse. In my hands hes only been chilling and weve just done a lot of ground work and working on the selfconfidence. When ridden with a bit he has the tendency to tense a lot as soon as he doesnt know whats expected from him (because hes been punished severely for not knowing???) and ive not ridden horses a lot in my life, but i have made it a key to make him relax 100% before starting to ask him to do things like walking straight lol
    just because he tenses so much all the time we always have to work on relaxing
    and so i thought maybe if i try bitless hell find it easier to relax and lo and behold he does! like a lot!! he has a gentle bit but yeah idk. bitless was so much better for him and until i get my confidence and he get his we are gonna work like that before trying a bit again. ive ridden him in a ropehalter before but i think it was too unclear what i wanted with that on so this bridle made it superclear and easy for us to communicate.
    when driving too, he was a lot less tense when walking first (thats a big problem for him, being in front and not having his secutity next to him, me)) and idk. Im still keeping our sessions very short so I havent had time to really feel the bridle but the little ive felt was amazing and he was very easy and idk. great job shelby. im just gonna keep having fun and work with my mans insecurities and i think your bridle will be well used. When i got it it also encouraged other people to buy bitless so now we really do be going bitless in our stables. I let people try your bridle and they enjoy it and their horses enjoy it, its a good thing haha.

    The moment I saw that leather bit I was like "I bet that's a Sweet Billy's Bit". I love 'em. I have one and it's the first bit my Saddlebred didn't try to chew to a pulp. Had a rubber one that he spent the trail rides gnawing on. Sounded like squeakysneakers down a school hallway.
    Unfortunately my stallion chewed the leather bit so until he's fully settled with wearing bits and not chewing on them like bubblegum, he gets to have the regular full cheek snaffle.

Very cleaver way to absolutely illustrate how restrictive and stress inducing even supposedly "benign" equipment. Very illuminating. Brilliant idea, Shelby. I'm sure they are horrible and restrictive this equipment is -- constant torture, really. Can I suggest you make a short version of this video for TikTok --- it may go viral and really inform a lot of people about this cruel situation they are unaware of creating. And somehow I'm still thinking of that pony I often ride at the riding school and want to try it out. Maybe I've bonded with him, LOL. I just feel like he could be more comfortable, I've noticed he doesn't like a strong contact with the bit / reins, so I try to be very soft.

    I desperately want a Harlow bridle but I have so much other stuff I need at the same time. I need a tack fitter and a dentist (not for me, of course), so that would potentially mean a new saddle and bridle. I want to get the correct sized bit for my horse as well, preferably a double-jointed baucher as she still has the french-link bit that came with her. I have no idea what size head my horse has either, her head is seemingly small for her breed and height, I even had to put extra holes in her headcollar/halter! All of her tack was given to me when I got her and I wrongly assumed that it meant the saddle was correctly fitting, despite me removing the noseband and replacing the headpiece (to replace the throat latch) on her bridle because they were too big by a mile. It's a mess lmao. Videos like these and the saddle talks are excellent for making you realise all the obviously wrong things you didn't notice before for some reason, and because of them I bought a saddle pad with high wither clearance and no longer use that horrible flat thing that bunched up and slid backwards under the saddle :/ Soon my poor horse will be dressed like a very comfortable queen, and her crown WILL be that Harlow bridle, dammit

    super cool! I actually know a horse who self-bridles sometimes even before his owner is ready, and he also know another really neat trick..... taking his bridle off while riding. He is just naturally really explorative, and is a western horse. So think snaffle bridle and he isn't placed in a tie down. I'm glad that my bridle isn't restricting my horse, tight flashes and nose bands suck, even worse tie downs.... even if fitted loosely as soon as the horse is in motion there will be pulling on the nose.... I hate seeing tie downs on performance horses esp

    I convinced mum to no longer use nose bands on any of our boys. I showed her a clip of a horse that had a broken nose from having his nose band too low and tight, the horses had gotten stuck in its martingale and pulled really so hard it snapped but damaged the nose in the process.

    Hi Shelby!
    Great addition to your herd, Doornail is beautiful! When you have a moment check out another trainer Cathie Hatrick-Anderson, she also uses a skull just like doornail to explain bits and equine mouth anatomy. She's a natural trainer, she's a big Cook's bitless bridle user (which I know isn't the best) but perhaps she hasn't explored the many other great ones out there now... I found the info in her video pretty interesting, and she has done over 700 videos on every horse issue out there. I don't like many trainers on UA-cam at all, but her methods are interesting to observe. Of course I am so impressed that you would already be thinking of using the skull to demonstrate this incredibly important issue in regards to horse training. You're poised to be one of the greatest trainers ever, look at what you accomplished at your age, wait till your Cathie's age... Great video Shelby!👏🐴

My OTTB is only four and all the people I know that have younger horses always have the flash and curb chain. I believe that is not a good way to ride since the flash prevents them from opening their mouths and the curb chain can be very harmful.

    I honestly wouldn't mind seeing English start to forgo nosebands. The Western folks seem to get along just fine without them and if we're training and riding properly there should be no need to prevent crossing and opening jaws. I don't think they're cruel when not too tight or low down but it'd be nice to see more people at least try going without.
    Also: Dressage rider here, I would love to have no leverage, and only soft snaffles allowed in Dressage. We're supposed to be showing how soft and well trained us and our horse are so it shouldn't be a problem to not have a lot of bit right? 🤭

    • @pestilence654
      @pestilence654 2 роки тому

      Yes!! Im buying my guy a Harlow bridle and then I'll be playing around with different snaffle bits to see what is most comfortable and soft in his mouth. I hate flashes, neck stretchers, crank nosebands, and harsh bits and draw reins. I see them all the time in dressage and it completely defeats the purpose of the sport. If my horse is supposed to be supple, relaxed, and soft then why am I putting unnecessary stressors on my horse? Dressage has turned into just making the horse look pretty. A nice curved neck, shut mouth, and fancy movements are seemingly all we care about now. It's so gross.

    • @osteophagus
      @osteophagus 2 роки тому

      @@pestilence654 They're so rushed in getting the horses out and competing at the higher levels to make money, they don't want to wait 10 years to have a finished Dressage horse. I'm always sketched out when I see like a 6 year old in higher level tests. They're pretty much always clearly under muscled, constantly ducking behind the bit, hollow backed, flicky toes in extended trot instead of a controlled reach, etc. It's very sad. Doing proper Dressage helped my mare stay sound and supple even at 30, it built a base of strength and flexibility that I'm sure she'd have crumbled from sway back and arthritis without. Thinking of poor Totilas (RIP sweet boy); if your Dressage horse is retiring riddled with body stress and arthritis and then dies at the very young age of 20 you did not do your Dressage right.

    Such an interesting video! It's amazing to see how much different nosebands and bits affect the overall comfort of the horse. I'm from Zimbabwe and all of the relief/anatomical bridles I can find seem to have the noseband attached below the bit. Would this have the same function as a flash/drop noseband? I can't seem to find the information anywhere! Some examples are the Capitol Relief Bridle, High Jump Relief Bridle and the Kurden Relief Bridle. I'm looking into getting a horse off the track over the next year and, as a vet student, I want to make informed, responsible decisions for my horse without any unnecessary discomfort due to me being ill-informed. Are you going to be restocking your Harlow bridle without the fleece? Also apologies if I'm just dumb and missing it but is there a size guide? I know the website says they run large, I'd just like to measure bc my TB gelding has a weird long/skinny head and depending on the brand he fits from OS to cob XD

      Yes I will be and there should be a size chart on the website. If he’s quite between sizes I would recommend the full!

    Will there be a restock on the ”regular” Harlow bridles?

    What bit would you recommend for a Ex racer who raced for 10 years, my boy is also called Milo. He is very strong in open spaces.

      Look at her training of an ottb it has so much good information about training out that anxiety or excitement (which has shown to be mostly anxiety) so you dont ever need more contact she actually shows what to do step by step.

    Put a lot of pressure on your own nose, and under your chin. You can't open your mouth it can give you a headache or saver pain! Imagine a horse!

      No, you are thinking of wolf teeth, a small premolar right up against the regular molars.

    Hi! Very interesting video so far. I agree, using a tool(s) to "fix" a problem is unfair, actually mean and inconsiderate to the horse's health and emotional wellbeing, and really ineffective as the root problem and the root emotions are not being addressed. The problem is simply being suppressed, and this is really not something we want since it comes with a high risk of causing more anxiety, aggression, fear, pain, discomfort, "misbehavior" etc....I also agree that bits and halters + bridles can be scary! Having the jaw wired shut, or having something in your mouth that you can't remove is very scary and likely uncomfortable. I think that using a halter, bridle, bit or any equipment comes with the responsibility to introduce the equipment slowly, kindly, and with patience with the goal of creating a positive association and keeping the horse relaxed and willing, and under threshold. Like what you were doing with the feral pony you rescued, working on counter-conditioning the halter.

    I've been riding for years, and I'm surprised to find that these are things that riders do. Some of these abrasive tack pieces look like they hurt! Why? Just WHY?! They're your buddy, your friend, your partner!!! And you're making their job suck! On PURPOSE! WHY?!
