Connally had served as Nixon's Treasury Secretary in 1971-72, in which capacity he abandoned the gold standard and supported an increase in the debt ceiling, both to help fight inflation - and they failed miserably! These were bad decisions! And now we have a national debt of $20 trillion and growing. When will we ever learn?? We need the gold standard back!

Why didn't the networks go with red and blue for the candidates in '72?

State maps back before 1976 were for die hards and people at home. The Networks didn't get their purpose yet. The first real map anyone had as far as I remember and know was in 1952 with CBS but it was very primitive and black and white hurt it. The first real effort at one was by CBS in 68 but again black and white hurt it.
Here it was such a washout of a landslide no one cared. In 1976 it was a surprise barnburner (Ford came back and almost pulled it out,) that NBC figured let's go for it and they did the huge map which became a staple in 80. As for the colors some places just loved to use yellow in the old days. NBC smartly used the world-wide scheme until 92 but ABC used the US based colors starting in 1980.

efan2011 NBC John Chancellor came up with that concept in the '76 election.

I think Connally only flirted with supporting Nixon in 68, but never made a public announcement. After all his friend LBJ was still in the White House and opposing LBJ's VP would have been difficult. As a matter of fact, Humphrey carried TX in 68.

How did President Nixon win the state of Utah with only 12 votes, to Senator McGovern's 1 vote?!

+Mr. Hissing Cockroach What you had was a projection in which (mostly likely based on previous track records) the networks felt certain in doing so.
And I agree that would be way too small a sample to make any sort of projection even though Utah is a traditionally safe bet for the Republicans.

ABC like the other networks used computers and I believe the league of women voters to help project states and the AP had a service too. Computers and the people doing it must have felt confident enough once the poll was closed to call it. Utah wasn't in question anyways. Cali or a big state I'd be concerned calling it that early.

Humphrey is the last Democrat I would have ever voted for, granted I wasn't born until the 80s, but he's by far the most honorable post war Democratic candidate that I most certainly would've picked over the GOP candidate Nixon.
Between JFK and Nixon it's a toss up, they really didn't have any different politics on anything substantial, and in fact Cuban Missile Crisis might have been adverted by Nixon's report with Kruschev. Kruschev thought JFK was a wuss he could run over.
