This brought back memories. Funny enough, I had 4 FDs and they never left me on the side of the road. You have vacuum leaks. I would just get rid of the sequential system. Also be careful running an open down pipe and no tune. You’ll get boost spikes…probably why you have vacuum leaks ask me how I know. Zip tie all your vacuum hoses.

Yes, I have a Power FC going in soon, so that should take care of any danger moments. Eventually I will rip everything out and go single.

The twin turbo control system is not as bad as people make it out to be, I fixed mine and re-did my entire rats nest, testing solenoids and fixing a couple of broken ones, it is easily understandable if you actually take the time to read about it and look at the famous colored hose diagram. Maybe my opinion is skewed since I've been tuning and messing with turbo project cars for over a decade but I am firmly in the camp of either keep your sequentials or go single. Parallel twins are the worst of both worlds, you lose your sequential low end but you can't make single turbo power.

As an original owner of a FD, I give you a hearty welcome to FD ownership!
Now that you're going catless, you'll make more boost than the stock ECU is expecting and the A/F mix to the engine will get too lean resulting in motor rebuild time. Create a fix now for that before fixing your secondary turbo actuation. Ping Rotary Performance in Garland TX for assistance on this issue.
Flush your coolant as you may have air in the system causing overheating (and the fluid may no longer be a healthy green). There are a few tricks to successfully changing the coolant including disconnecting a hose near the upper intake manifold and also a bolt in the engine block for draining coolant. I'd share some photos, but YT won't let me link them. Also check for correct operation of the fan relays too, plus a lower temp thermocouple mod too.

Yep, the car is definitely getting an ECU before we actually drive the car hard with the catless setup. @@Nyaonyx FDs have been my second favorite car of all time since I was little and they were new. (Lancia Stratos before you ask). The part that hurts my brain is that I remember watching car shows with my Dad and being like "Why would someone pay six figures for an old Charger!?" when he complained about how expensive they got. "Well, I guess they're classics now and I missed my chance." He'd say. FDs are now OLDER relative to my current age than B-body Chargers were to my Dad. They're valuable collector cars and I missed my chance. *Existential dread intensifies*

Be careful! Without a cat there’s a good chance of boost creep/blowing the engine unless the wastegate has been ported. Even a high flow cat will result in overboosting unless the wastegate duty cycle is adjusted.

A properly running twin turbo setup is golden. I've owned my 94 FD touring since 2003. When it comes to the FD and trying to get everything working to stock levels and fixing all the oil leaks, it's always easiest to just pull the engine and disassemble all the assesories down to the bare block so you can inspect and FIX everything with ease. Never would I EVER waste my time trying to repair the rats nest with the engine inside the car. Just way too much hassle. With the engine out, you can pull certain components in bunches like the rats nest with the wiring harness attached. This makes it much easier to replace each vacuum line one by one and to insure proper put back. Then you can vauccum test all the solenoids to make sure they all work while holding vaccum.

Sounds like a vacuum leak which can affect the solenoid working properly for the 2nd turbo. People typically assume the turbo is bad, when it's either just a vacuum leak, or the solenoid actuator is bad. You should also tune it before you go full throttle again. Now you're running no cats and much more free flow exhaust, it will affect the tune and can cause damage to the engine.

Just my 2 cents so you come ahead. They are reliable if you do the following:
    1. Replace all rubber vacuum hoses with silicone hoses, time and heat rots the rubber and create vacuum leaks.
    2. Add 2-3 ounces of 2 cycle oil every time you fill the tank. The factory oil metering pumps are garbage. The car will smoke lightly but the engine will stay healthy.
    3. Get rid of the sequential turbochargers and get a high quality ceramic ball bearings turbo, like turbonetics. You will need a piggy back ECU like Apexi or a standalone ECU. Either way it will run much better and faster.
    4. With that you will need a better clutch, good up to 500HP and probably a new fuel rail and higher volume injectors.
    5. Don’t ignore the engine oil. Get premium fully synthetic and replace it every 3k miles. The engine produces so much heat and so much fuel enters the chamber (contaminating the oil) that it needs to be replaced often.
Hope this helps your rotary road to heaven.

Ofc there would be ton of issues with a car that's been sitting for a long time outside. Cars are supposed to be driven, not sit doing nothing, they develop "diseases" this way. I recently bought a Lexus IS250, that's been sitting for a few months and once I fix one issue, another one or two comes up and the car didn't look at a bad state when inspected at first

The temp gauge pointing above halfway is a worry. FD temp gauges were notorious for not being especially sensitive and thus pointing above halfway can meaning anything from "a little bit hot" to "this engine is hotter than the surface of the sun". Most FD groups recommend that if the temp gauge goes above halfway you stop straight away as an overheated engine can warp the rotor housing.

As you've probably popped a hose off the rats nest and you're gonna have to pull it back apart whilst you're under there put in the next size up secondary injectors. For now it'll just overfuel a bit but help with the extra boost and it'll be better for when you fit an ecu

Rotarys are very good engines. Every engine has its blowing point and like a lot of engines can be made to be pretty strong. Rotarys can be very reliable, for example the mazda 787b was the most reliable race car at the 1991 24 hours of le mans and Angel motorsports raced their rotary truck, then they tried to blow it up and they couldn't and trust me when I tell you they were beating the shit out of it.

The first time I swapped my clutch, I forgot to snap the throwout bearing back into the pressure plate and the first time I pressed on the pedal, that plunger shot out and I dumped a bunch of brake fluid. I was able to retrieve it through that inspection cover.
Edit: if I'd let the video play another 30 seconds, I'd see you did just that lol.

Rotaries themselves aren't unreliable; people are unreliable and treat their cars like crap.
When you have a car that differs from standard cars, then there will be an adjustment phase.....for owners, dealers and mechanics. That phase may never resolve itself and in the case of a niche vehicle it may never reach a point where that vehicle is accepted to be "good". The FD was complicated and uncompromising in its design and intent.... being the only version of the RX-7 that didn't have a poverty spec model or a less stressed engine option, so it's no surprise that then didn't sell many of them, and every one of them failed in the same fashion.

This makes me want to buy an RX-8 immediately and save my way up to an FC and then an FD eventually. Really excited for this build series where you're taking it back to stock and going for driveability first and foremost. Can't wait for your next upload!

Just skip the RX-8 it has added issues with the key system that can add thousands. It was a weird credit card sized key fob that no one else used, and Mazda only every used it on the RX-8 and high end Mazda6s, which the later go straight to the scrap yard the second they need a key, no remorse.

Rx8s are a lot of fun as an ex owner, terrible on fuel, burns oil like crazy but it’s the trade off was worth it while I had it. Still miss my old one

Sounds like a vacuum leak, these engines need to be rebuilt after 100.000 miles, so that's something to consider, I would do a compression test just for some peace of mind (it needs a specific rotary compression tester), I think it kept overheating because you didn't tune it after removing the cat...

    • @albonfilms
      @albonfilms  2 місяці тому

I just bought a compression tester, so lets see! I'm taking it easy with the no cats for sure but I think the overheating might just be the 100F Texas ambient temps. Stock FD cooling system sucks!

Albon... by the moment you said "sunroof" I realized you bought some kind of junk around US$ 20,000. If you really asked me, I'd rather disassemble entirely the car in the front of the previous owner and discount every single dollar on new parts. If the owner gets traumatized enough, I'd say something like US$ 10.000, taxes included.
