I'm actually planning to release a cover of this on my UA-cam channel for Veterans Day this year. This is based on the movie that's in the video. It's called Johnny Got His Gun.

Metallica is on tour, it's actually a 3 year tour. I caught them last month in Seattle. They have so much material that they have ingeniously divided their concert date by 2 with no repeat weekends then off to the next major city. They mostly play NFL stadiums. They still sound and perform great. I've been following them since their beginning. This is depressive and horrific song that you nailed the meaning. At the concerts, they show a WW1 soldier going through war and the hospital scenes too. Metallica has deep meaningful songs that other secular bands don't talk about. For example, Creeping Death is about the horrors of being under Pharaoh's rule.

We need to give brother Steve a break from all these deep, depressing tunes and request some fun, happy tunes. Got my bro re-thinking his life choices, "Start a reaction channel, they said. It'll be fun, they said."

Somebody's trying to set you up today. Back to back tear jerkers. Such a great song and job writing the song to fit parts of a movie from the 30s or 40s maybe. It's a long movie too.
Side topic; I never heard the criticism of Lars from really anybody, but I've heard several people say that other people like to hate on him. What's their problem with him. That dude's a beast. Is it jealousy? Idk, cuz Idk who's saying stuff about him. Tommy Lee? Sounds like something he might say. I fuckin love Lars' drumming. One of my fav live vids from them is that monster festival in Moscow back in 91, Creeping Death is the song, and it's based on Biblical plagues and I believe they also mention killing first born sons so is that the events leading to Passover? I'm not well versed in the Bible, but apparently Metallica is. That song rocks, if you never heard it before. So worth checking out.

It’s a masterpiece but like Fade To Black, it’s too nihilistic for me to listen to often. Metallica knows how to pull at those emotional strings as if they were some kind of master of puppets. God bless and Metal on!

Just for your own enjoyment you might want to listen to Carpenters early work. In 1966 they won the Hollywood Bowl Battle of the Bands as the Dick Carpenter Trio (which spent from 1965 to 1968 performing in jazz clubs around LA). Richard Carpenter on keyboard and writer of some of their music and arranger. Karen Carpenter as a 15-year-old jazz drummer (in 65) who would grab and hold your attention (she did not sing yet). Wes Jacobs on tuba or bass. You can find recordings from that contest with a search for Carpenters Hollywood Bowl Battle of the bands 1966 “Iced Tea” Which Richard wrote or Carpenters Hollywood Bowl Battle of the bands 1966 “Girl from Ipanema”. In 1968 they won Your All-American College Show Still Richard and Karen but Bill Sissoyev replaced Jacobs on bass. You can see it with a search on Your All-American College Show Carpenters 1968 first TV appearance. Karen was singing by then. They signed with A&M the next year.

James Hetfield was writing a song about losing his arms and legs and the ability to communicate and someone told him there was a movie like that called Johnny Got His Gun. Instead of watching the movie, James read the source material, a book from Dalton Trumbo. As a teenager, that meant a lot to me.

Metallica has been my favorite band for decades so I guess I forgot what it was like to experience ‘One’ for the first time. Although it’s an incredibly sad & horrifying backstory, I think it’s a musical masterpiece. It’s a very real song about war.

Outside of Saving Private Ryan, Johnny Get your gun is one of those movies that gives you a real sense of what goes on in war. The book is even more intense than the movie, I actually cried when I read the book back in 8th grade for my end of year verbal essay for English class.

I think I was 16. I knew about Metallica but not really. My mother for my birthday bought me 2 tickets to see them on the Justice tour. I was excited not because it was Metallica but because it was a concert and my friend and I were going. We left this concert huge fans, they tore the place down. I don’t exactly remember the entire concert, we were 16 going to a Metallica concert…let’s just say we were properly medicated lol. I do remember they put on an incredible show and the audience was almost as loud as the band.
    We were instant fans
Check this out though……it cost my mother $30 for 2 tickets back in 1988 I think it was, maybe it was 1989 and I was 17. That’s not $30 per ticket, it was $30 for both
