they need to be spot welded to be attached safely and securely. You can use a 12v auto battery and solenoid switch to make a crude battery spot welder

Actually that's quite easy. Look into Joule Thiefs. Those might look like a hoax at first but when you look a little closer you'll realize that it's actually a real thing.
