This composition by Koji Kondo was amazing. You truly felt like you were on this impossible road of fear and challenge to fight a great evil. I mean back then video composition music was great because there was alot to prove and alot at stake. Not to mention with next gen hardware making alot more things possible it was time to test its limits with sound engineering and producing. I bet people had lots of fun creating music and games around this era.
The parts of the brain responsible for association latch on harder to music than words. Any experiences you had while this was playing are immediately brought back via association when you hear it again. The only association part of the brain stronger is smell, which is why you can remember what a specific food smells like for your entire life. Essentially, when you hear it, all the good memories you had in it rush back to you all at once, and you miss the ability to experience that joy again. It's sad, but be glad you had it while it lasted.

I still remember on christmas of 1996, waking up to seeing an n64 with a copy of mario 64, and a playstation with crash bandicoot for my brothers. I played both non stop, because it was just so addicting. The 3d dimension was revolutionary at the time. I remember being in elementary, and kids were talking about how incredible mario 64 and crash were and how cool and jaw dropping this new 3d stuff was. It was truly a time of innovation.
I think Mario 64 had the most memorable and greatest tracks I have ever heard in the series. It knew when to be dramatic (Bowser's Road) when to be energetic (the slider theme), and how to fit the atmosphere of a level (e.g. Whomp's Fortress. Snowman's Land, Big Boo's Haunt, Shifting Sand Land etc.). It is wonderfully eclectic.
Sayr To each their own. I don't think it is the greatest soundtrack of all time, but I would rank it among my top 10 game soundtracks, and I certainly consider it to be the best Mario soundtrack I have ever heard.
Sayr I love those soundtracks as well. Gusty Garden is so beautiful to listen to. I just found myself more attached to 64's soundtrack. Mario World is probably my second favourite though.

They have this song on Super Mario Galaxy 2 and there are a lot of levels on Galaxy 2 that are revived or redone from 64 and mario sunshine both. Super Mario Galaxy 2's version of this song seems a little more dramatic with opera in a sense.

And when she worked, she didnt get a whole crap ton of money but she still bought me stuff like a ps4, an xbox 360, Wii, and today in christmas she got me a whole new, untouched Nintendo entertainment system thank the lord for being born, this was the greatest day of my life, and I dont know if something else went wrong I was also the one out of eleven babies to come out of her.
This has to be one of my favorite themes in the Mario game franchise. when I was a kid this was always my favorite part. Now I'm in my thirties my kids love playing hello neighbor, I can't stress how broken that game is... One day trying to beat it I got frustrated and said you know what I'm going to show you guys a game I played when I was your age, ... Damn I was so proud watching my 4-year-old son and 7 year old daughter play this game and fall in love with it. My son actually likes playing this level to show me that he can beat Bowser because he knows it's my favorite song in the game. Mostly nostalgia talking but it's amazing to see how this game transcends time... Oh and spoilers I told my kids if they get a few more stars in the game by themselves I'll show them ocarina of Time.

A game that should've had an immediate sequel to it. Super Mario 64 with the ability to use Yoshi this time. There are a handful of games that didn't get their deserved sequels. SM 64, Chrono Trigger, Super Mario World (not Yoshi's Island version), as well as others.
Huh...nice to know...I actually didn't play Sunshine b/c I was turned off at the fact Mario was running around with that dumbass water jet pack. It just didn't look like a game I wanted to play.
I do have to admit, the water jet was a really bad idea. Other than that, the core platforming is still there, and personally I found sunshine to be better due to it's vastly improved controls and camera.

I can't believe the game is this old now. It was soooooo amazing to see it when it first came out. One of top favorite games of all time and I just love the soundtracks. I like the new Mario games thats being put out because I'm a fanatic about Mario bros, but Super Mario 64 will always have a place in my heart. Might have to download on WiiU if its available.

Just like most here I feel everything that's being described. It's both a blessing and a curse. It makes me happy yet also sad. I suffer from major depressive disorder and these always remind me of times I didn't have to deal with what I deal with now.

Then used jump kick backwards to climb the slope, haha

I didn't even use those switches. I just either got enough speed to triple jump on to it, or I long jumped and then ran up the rest.

I remember when my parents bought me the 64 for my sixth birthday back in 1997 I was mesmerized at the graphics and also mario 64 was the first game I got for it. Anyway so many memories!
My very favorite detail has to be that they included the sound effect of collecting red coins

I can't believe the game is this old now. It was soooooo amazing to see it when it first came out. One of top favorite games of all time and I just love the soundtracks. I like the new Mario games thats being put out because I'm a fanatic about Mario bros, but Super Mario 64 will always have a place in my heart. Might have to download on WiiU if its available.

Just like most here I feel everything that's being described. It's both a blessing and a curse. It makes me happy yet also sad. I suffer from major depressive disorder and these always remind me of times I didn't have to deal with what I deal with now.

The nostalgia hits hard. I remember my aunt first showing me this game when I was 2, and now im 11 and I still play it to this day. This is and will always be my favorite game. :D
