I have an 82 cb650, there is a likely chance that your tank is rusting. I had to clean my tank and coat the inside as I was getting rusty gas going into the carbs as well. Good luck on the build!

I don’t know shit about welding but thinking about it, it seems like welding thick metal to thin metal would be a challenge
