Old school Naruto was so great. I remember reading the manga as a 10 year old and Itachi was just the greatest villain of all time for me at that point. He's just so evil and a threat to even the most seasoned Ninja in the village. Everyone feared him and thats why I loved him.
I still think he is one the best atm
He's still a great character though his change could have been done better. Kishimoto made it seem like Itachi's plan relied on a lot of chance, which knowing who he is, is probably not the case.
I've also heard, but I dont know the veracity of this claim, that Kishimoto originally planned for Itachi to be a villain, and changed his mind later. That's why there is somewhat of a shift between the Itachi of OG naruto and itachi of Shippuden

Original Naruto is better than Shippuden, imo. It's much more gritty and grounded, with that old school feel to it. Drawing quality on average is better also, imo. OST is fkn masterpiece. Shippuden OST is great also, but the og is just too good.

@@crocoboi7936honestly yeah rewatching now shippuden makes sense with how sasuke was like as you can see how he held on to trying to not be full on evil in the begining but by being influenced by others he kinda lost all purpose for even sticking to his morals. I actually enjoyed sasuke up until 5 kage summit but forgave him once he killed that one character that we all hated even more

There's some lore that explains that Sasuke's dad was a candidate for Fourth Hokage. And was just as feared in the last great ninja war as the Fourth was. So for Itachi to kill him and every other member of their clan is pretty crazy.

@Justarandomweeb453 yes retcon as in undoing what was and what we knew. To be clear I have no issue with plot twists, but twists only work if they are done consistently. With all the information we have of Itachi and how he handled things with Sasuke from this ep alone, it was never going to align with someone that is supposed to be good.
Kishi tried jumping through a lot of hoops but he undermined everything that he built making Itachi to drive Sasuke's hatred. He does it a lot too. Less we forget how child murderer, soul stealer Orochimaru ends up, or making a character who's whole thing is hard work and perseverance paying off being a literal child of prophecy.
Aint no way a smart character like Itachi couldn't have done thing a better way to ensure Sasuke didn't turn out the way he did if he wanted to avoid that and that will always be the case.

Rewatching this, it's so heartbreaking seeing Sasuke go from telling Itachi "Big brother let's go train!" to "D-don't kill me!". It must've been unbelievably unreal for him to experience the intense shift from Itachi's actions. He went from loving him not suspecting him at all, to fearing and running away for his life from him.
SPOILER: Must have been really hard for Itachi to watch his little brother fear him too.

Yeah and Kisame was blocking his path and watching him closely, so it would be difficult to swoop into rescue Sasuke without a fight. When Naruto made a break for it, Kisame got distracted and took his eyes off of Jiraiya long enough for him to use the Toad Mouth trap.
