Before I relocated to China I obtained the Chinese temporary driving permit in Beijing International Airport T3, police office I think was in B1 or B2. All I needed was my U.K. drivers licence, 2 passport photos, my passport with a valid visa (as of 2013), filled in the form and licence card issued in less than 10 minutes (no international licence or hotel booking requested, only my address in China [used my wife’s address]). The permit was stamped with “only valid for rental car “ (English and Chinese) with red ink that was completely illegible. I used it to drive my wife’s car no problem.
Thank you so much for putting in an effort to cover all these points which are super important whilst looking into doing a road trip. The information is quite cohesive and concise!
Sometimes highways are a bit boring particularly near big cities. I feel much joy driving along rural areas of western side, usually with a 4x4 more a decade ago, through mountains and rivers. Now, I'm considering a EV, as most decent EVs are usually inherently high torque then I think I could drive through most unpaved road easily as long as not crawling big rocks and deep waters. But do I have to plan my route carefully for charging and couldn't deviate much from that for adventure in remote areas...
Hey Eric. Just found your channel and subscribed. I've lived here for 28 years and have driven in many places. However have you ever driven in Xinjiang - tips (I'm planning on camping in some areas)? I'm trying to plan the logistics for next year. Also where are the locations at 12:12 (hill) and 12:16 (sand/mud flats)? Looks awesome.
Thanks Kevin. 1212 is Furong Village and 1216 is Qinghai somewhere national park, I am blanking on the name at the moment. I attempted to drive into Xinjiang during covid but wasn't allowed... I've never driven there unfortunately, only gone in by train and plane. Maybe someday! Good luck on your adventures.
@@Eric_Garrison Thanks for the very prompt reply Eric! Furong - duh, how did I miss that, ha. I'll do some research see if I can drive a one way from Kashgar to Kanas Lake and then drop it off in Altay (that's got to be close to 2,000 kms so a bit far by bus! Fingers crossed ! Good luck back home, hope it's working out for you.
Possible that you could pre book a car online with a credit card, or maybe rentals at airport will take a credit card … but best bet is to just use alipay/wechat. Set up your apps before you arrive

your Chinese wife address is the main reason you got your permit.

Amazing vistas and drone shots. I hope you can make a long video about all the amazing places you discovered in China
Very informative, thanks!
Thanks Eric, that's just what I was looking for!!
Glad to help!
That’s great, I just visited China last month, met someone that let me drive his car without a Chinese drivers license, that was just local driving.
Thank you so informative and helpful!

Thank you Eric. Am curious about Insurance situation for the Rental cars.
u can see he show the price is 700+ rmb for 2 days instead of 400+ rmb, the added price is mostly insurance money.
like what your share and your style.
Can you do a long-range test drive in a series hybrid/extended-range EV?
Very helpful. Thanks, Eric.
Glad it is useful 🫡
highway fee is about 0.5RMB/km
I heard that credit cards don’t work in China! How can I pay and rent, especially when my credit card cover the car insurance.

Any information about how to obtain temporary drivers license if arriving to china with my own car at Horgos. European plates ?
No idea dude sorry
I was told having an international driving license is good too?
I don’t think so (not 100%) but I’m sure you can use it to apply for Chinese license either as a tourist or resident
