i think the slowness of Addie Larue adds to the story. you meet this character, Addie, who is cursed for all eternity and expect her story to be short? nah. i loved it.
Yes, this! It is slow but it's slow for a reason. Her life hasn't been a whirlwind it's been slow and almost agonizing, and I think the slowness of the story makes it all the better.
I think the interest in Midnight Library depends on where someone is in their life. I read it when I was questioning my career decisions, and it really hit home for me. Also, I hated Addie LaRue because there was so much hype and I had such high expectations, but found it to be so slow. I'm more of a plot-driven person, so I think that's where it fell flat for me.
The Lost Apothecary was a Book of the Month option earlier this year and I believe it was one of the candidates for Book of the Year, so that could be why you've heard about it a lot. I personally really liked it, but I do remember thinking that it didn't seem like the story I expected to be reading based on the cover art and the description in the BOTM app. So maybe some people were disappointed because they were expecting a certain type of book and it didn't match up with that.
for 2021 releases, I hate hate hated the lost apothecary and the love hypothesis. biggest disappointment was probably one last stop. what a letdown. In general, I despised the friend zone
My thoughts on the two I've read: The Silent Patient... I loved it. After the fact, though, I felt kind of dumb; most of the people that did not like it probably read lots of thrillers and therefore picked up on the foreshadowing and kind of obvious twist WAY earlier than I did. I, on the other hand, didn't see the twist coming *at all* so I found it really satisfying. Seige and Storm... Daresay I hated this book. I adore the trilogy as a whole, but the use of voyeurism and noncon bordering on rape as plot points in this book was extremely uncomfortable for me. It made me genuinely hate the Darkling for the first time, and feel genuinely upset that there are Darkling stans out there; in my eyes, he is a seriously toxic and irredeemable character. If I ever re-read this series I will absolutely skip over this book and go straight to Ruin & Rising.
One of the factor that really bothered me with 'Kingdom of the wicked' is that, as an Italian, I can say that the author made no research. Literally none. And I think it's Unacceptable to write a book Set in a particular place and in a particular historical period and not knowing the basic things about them
I teach We Were Liars and my students adore it! Personally, my fav of the year of The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue and Kingdom of the Wicked, so I guess I have a unique reading style, lol. As a teacher, I try to read the modern releases and encourage my students to create TBR lists. We are currently finishing up The Book Thief in English 11 and my students are enjoying the unique narrator.
I remember reading We Were Liars back in 2017 (I think) but I hated it so much. I literally had no clue what happened but I didn't love it at all sadly 😕
@@sophieann98 i agree. I used to follow Zoella and she did a book club with WHSmith and We Were Liars was one of them. Like I said, I read it, and I sadly hated it 😔
Lol. As someone who loves VE Schwab, but not all of her books I know exactly how Addie LaRue ended up on both lists, but I don't wanna spoil so I won't 😅
I loved the Midnight Library and would still recommend reading it. I’ve always wondered what it would be like to live different lives based on the choices we make in life, so this book resonated with me.
Silent Patient is incredible. The Maidens was also really good. I finished both of them, and I’m the kind of person who will DNF more books than I read. Silent Patient is my current favorite. Super memorable. Super fast read. The writing style is just the best.
i dnfed the midnight library halfway through the book. the main character *mild spoiler* would experience something somewhat inconvenient in a certain lifetime and then end up back in the library again - and maybe that’s the whole lesson of the book that “every life has ups and downs” but idk. maybe i’ll pick it back up again but it got so repetitive
I read Mexican gothic last year around Halloween and was underwhelmed, I’m glad so many people enjoyed it but it was too much of a slow burn for me and siege and storm I read at the start of the year was my least favorite from the trilogy. The pacing is all over the place and the miscommunication between Alina and her multiple love interests is irritating
I’d love it if there could be a Charlie related video like maybe books you’d think he’s enjoy? Or something along those lines? Sending much love hope you’re well and having a happy festive season🥰🐶 your uploads are my Christmas advent calendar which means my advent is superior that yours😋
That shirt is very beautiful on you. The color looks great on you and the match of the eyeshadow 👏 --The books on my list to read that are the most disliked of 2021 are: The Silent Patient, Lore, One Last Stop, The Lost Apothecary and We Were Liars. I will definitely need to go into those with an open mind but than again I usually do with every book because what I like others may not and vise versa.
I liked the Lost Apothecary but only the audiobook. Couldn’t get through the physical book. I’m not a historical fiction person but this one actually kept me intrigued because of the different POVs.
I hated The silent patient. The book is boring, unbelievable and problematic. The therapist was manipulative, narcissistic and he clearly was unfit to be the therapist to anybody. I just could NOT believe that other therapists didn't see how unhealthy his behavior towards other people was. I was so surprised when The silent patient won Goodreads choice awards 2020.
Right. I agree it wasn’t just that he was problematic. But also it was way unrealistic how problematic he was and how he was able to get away with the behavior.
The Silent Patient, The Guest List, The Invisible Life of Addie Larue and The Lost Apothecary are all in my Top 10 for the year 😂🤷♀️ couldn’t agree more with Mexican Gothic though!
if you haven't read normal people i really recommend giving it a try! i totally understand the polarization of opinions around it but it's one of my favorites and its a really quick one. i finished it in a day!
I read 2 books off this list, I just couldnt bring myself to like Lore, it took me 3 weeks to read that, I forced myself to finish it because I was almost towards the end. And I was very neutral about The Midnight Library, but I liked how differently mental health is portrayed with sprinkle of fantastical element
Great list! I have read four of the selections and I agree with Mexican Gothic (just read on audio and barely finished) and The Guest List (snooze fest). I am surprised to see One Last Stop and The Invisible Life of Addie Larue on here. I gave both 5 stars.
I would be curious to hear the why those people didn't enjoy One Last Stop, which isn't a new favourite but was a pleasant surprise that if I were to make a best books of the year list it would definitely be on it. As for The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, I gave that 1.5 stars. It has an amazing concept that definitely intrigued me and sounded like my kind of book. The hype didn't matter to me, it was more it was by an author that I have enjoy books by before, and that the premise of it sounded like something I would be into. And I love character driven stories, and slow paced books but so that wasn't a problem for me. My problem was the fact that there was not much in the book, just across the board it gave me so little. There was basically no characterisation, no world-building, no plot, no development and not even a story. There wasn't anything there to enjoy, and many people have said that it was written well but I disagree. I didn't think the writing was really much at all. So, yeah. I gave it a half star to acknowledge that I did love it during the first 70 pages. But after that, all the interest and enjoyment for the book just died. I am confused too by all the love it gets because if I am being fully honest I haven't seen a single positive review for it that wasn't at least a little disappointed.
I really liked Kingdom of the Wicked but before I read it a lot of people were talking about the Romance aspect and this was not a book that was heavy romance. Maybe that changes in the next book (I am still waiting for my FL copy) but what I went in for and what I got were not the same. One Last Stops ending fell flat for me but I still overall liked it. I can't believe ya'll did my girl Addie like that.
Wow! Im a book thief fan for reference but I LOVED the silent patient and one last stop… I think I gave them both 5 stars 🤣 Midnight library was 4 star for me 😅
I liked the book thief as well ❤️. Yes, I was mad and threw the book across the room, but I stilled loved it. Lol. I liked The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue. I heard a lot of mixed reviews on it, and understand them.
Hey hailey this is the first video i've seen of yours in a while (i've been super busy) but I just wanted to tell you that you look so beautiful, idk if it's your makeup or the shirt (which is so pretty) but you look fantastic. I hope you have a great day ❤️❤️
My worst book of the year was Into the Wispering Woods by Aiden Thomas. I even pre-ordered it and I couuget past 10 pages without falling asleep. It neber got anywhere. It was the same throughout the whole story.
Yeahhhh The Lost Apothecary was a big let down for me. I think I was super excited about the premise of a woman helping other women escape bad situations in the 1700s… but it was not. This premise works as the backbone, but do not be fooled. Reading this book felt like going on an Tinder date and then finding out your date not only used someone else’s photo, but is also 15 years older. Most of the “problems” the characters faced were really just inconveniences or indecisiveness, like keeping a secret that rates, at max, a 2/10 on the secret scale. Of the three main protagonists, it’s the 12 year old that is the least dramatic and most levelheaded - what? I’m not entirely sure how this book was nominated for a GoodReads award. I wanted to DNF the book at 25, 50, and 75% of the way through but kept lying myself that it could get better. It didn’t. To end on a positive note, the cover is stunning.
I loved the Jack the Ripper series and thought kingdom of the wicked was intriguing. The sequel seemed so unfinished? And the twists were so boring and predictable.
I'm definitely one of those people that hates We Were Liars by E Lockhart. Seeing it so much on tiktok confused me lol, so glad I read it as a library book instead of buying it.
My worst read was Gods and Monsters (finale to S&D), which was an anticipated release for me. The pacing was terrible, as the book has no business being 600 pages. The plot was weak. The book was full of typos in French and the French grammar was butchered... As a person whose first language is French, it was a pain to read.
This would probably be also my least favorite of 2021! The Serpent and Dove series should have been a duology. There is so much of the plot that could have been cut and the story would have been just fine.
I agree with that. I HATED Addie. It was probably my least favorite book of the year as well. The idea of a girl who is “invisible” is incredible and it could have been so much more than it was. For me, I was disappointed in what it was compared to what it could have been.
Siege and Storm for sure was not a favorite and I pushed through to Ruin and Rising and wasn't disappointed with it but......god Siege and Storm, I wanted to burn it for that ONE scene/character😑🙄
I did not enjoy An Emotion Of Great Delight by Tahereh Mafi! I do usually enjoy Tahereh's books. But this book felt like I was reading a novel's first draft. Now I am little nervous for this author's 2022 new book, This Woven Kingdom.
Star Trek Discovery season two got me wanting to read Alice in Wonderland, the whole season is a low-key love letter. I got a really lovely edition and goodness only knows *when* I'll read it, but I plan to give it a real try. Even though the movie freaked me out as a kid, lol!
Least favorite - Yolk anything John Green @ me lol Favorite - Nancy Drew mysteries, or We Were Liars 😁🥳 finally read this hot, great and twisty mysterious relationship heavy, shallow family life , painful book
The three Shadow and Bone books were torture to me. I really struggled to get through them. I’m still struggling through Six of Crows but at least it’s better than the first three. I’ve learnt never to listen to the hype 😒 Next time I’d buy the first book and go from there and never ever buy all the books at once😉 I think my least favourite of the year was The Invisible Life of Addie Larue as well. It was boring 😒
I am so suprised that you found Addie Larue boring haha!! It was such an interesting, poignent, and beautiful story for me but I guess everyone has different expectations etc haha! I definitely recommend listening to the audiobook of Addie Larue, I started with the audiobook and then moved onto the physical copy and changing the format of the story helps to keep me listening and digesting everything going on:) not saying you have to love it of course haha just interested that we had such different reading experiences!
@@meredithwilliams__ I think the problem was that I expected so much from it because of the hype. Maybe one day I’ll read it again and maybe I’ll feel differently. I just finished Six of Crows and enjoyed that more then Shadow And Bone. As you said we can’t like everything, although I didn’t hate them; I just didn’t love them but I wasn’t the target age for those books either. I need to ignore the hype that’s for sure because it just makes the expectation to high and then it lets you down.
Addie Larue is a complete masterpiece. Had me hooked from start to end, can’t count the amount of times I bawled my eyes out, so many emotions for these beautiful characters❤️ It’s such a timeless, soul deep story that really hits you in the core and pulls on your heartstrings. Addie is one of my favourite characters ever, and The Invisible life of Addie Larue is without a doubt the best book I have ever read in my entire life!🥰
I loved addie larue but I can see why some people did not love it. I think there are a few big reasons 1. They didn’t connect to addie like others did. 2. They expected it to be fast paced but it was more character than plot driven 3. They didn’t love the romance (valid criticism) or not much smut (people that read a lot of fantasy romance like from blood and ash) 4. They did not fully understand the reason for the slowness, monotony, and repetitiveness of the book - it was in my opinion kind of meant to give us the feeling addie had in hundreds of years (I’ve told this to people and upon reflection some people are very mind blown by it) 5. The hype
I think the pacing of Addie LaRue is what does it. I personally loved it but have seen many people give up because it’s a slow going book. The audiobook is amazing though so I definitely recommend it if you think the slow pace might throw you off!
I feel so represented. God, how much I HATED Normal people and The midnight library! They might be part of the group of worst books I've ever read in my life.
Ninth House was my least favorite book i read this year as well. I havent read anything else by Leigh Bardugo and I do generally like dark academia, at least with shows and stuff, but Ninth House was just so slow and i felt like even when i was half way through i didnt know anything. I am still going to pick up her grishaverse books though because i liked her writing style.
I said Siege and Storm and was one of the 6. Hated it. 😬😬😬 It wasn't anything to do with the show though and I did go on to read Ruin and Rising and liked that one better. Also, Addie LaRue in my opinion was kinda slow but I read it toward the end of 2020 and I liked it.
Most people haven't heard of my favorite series, which is different from not liking it. It's also an example of where I had hoped YA would still be at this point instead of sailing off a cliff. The series I am speaking of is Vampire Beach by Alex Duval.
Aww I love Alice in Wonderland! I own at least 8 different copies. And my boyfriend got me a $400 special edition for my graduation of college with my English BA. 💕
Yay I’m shocked that people agreed with me about The Lost Apothecary!! I’ve heard mainly positive reviews and I was confused. I feel like there were two things about this book that threw me off: 1. The fact that BOTM sold it as a historical fiction mixed with fantasy, HOW??? I was wait for the fantastical aspect and it never came! 2. I liked the first half of the book and the second is where it went downhill quickly for me like I legit just wanted to skip all the present day chapter cause they bored me and I was so annoyed with the main girl in those chapters and I don’t normally get annoyed by main characters.
YES!!!! FIRST COMMENT!!!! Your shirt is GORGEOUS!!!! You’re absolutely gorgeous!!!! I’m loving bookmas!!!! Day 12 wow it’s flying by!!! Love watching a new video everyday !!!!
My least favorite that I dnf'd was Cemetery Boys. I found it boring and it dragged. That one hurt me so much because it was my most anticipated of the year and I got it from my best friend for Christmas. My least favorite from books that I finished would be Ace of Spades. It was depressing and the more I think about it the more I dislike it.
Ummmmm how do you hate Alice in wonderland? I read the original thanks to you and I’m up to like 16 copies (pathetic I know but working on it lol) it became one of my favorite stories ever! Also love the book thief! Love your Channel! Hope your taking care of yourself! ❤️
I would like to see more of these types of videos, not just during bookmas but maybe around June when it’s the half point of the year. So you can look at that video and compare to the next one
I definitely plan to implement it more regularly!!! 🥰
i think the slowness of Addie Larue adds to the story. you meet this character, Addie, who is cursed for all eternity and expect her story to be short? nah. i loved it.
Right! A story like that has to be told with every event & adventure she had.
Like that’s kinda the point?? The monotony of having an immortal life where no one remembers you and you can’t make an impact on the world??
Hailey looks absolutely stunning as always and can always count on her videos to brighten my day. Her uploads make me excited for each day.
The Invisible Life of Addie Larue was sooo slow! It was a DNF for me but I decided to try it again & by the end, it was a 5 star! So, so good!

Would love if you did a reading vlog on polarising books like Midnight Library & Normal People!!!
Off topic but your makeup is really pretty and matches your top perfectly!

My thoughts on the two I've read:

I definitely agree with you on the silent patient, I loved it but i’m also newer to thrillers too!
I noticed a theme with the 3 on this list that I read. They all had flashbacks so it was a slow journey to the end.

Great video!! Would love to see this evolve next year, like you mentioned about asking for more feedback :)
December is going by SO fast!!!
Also, who hates the Book Thief? Are they aware that they're wrong?
Yay bookmas and the holidays indoors is the BEST ✨🤯💚♥️💌🎄
How did anyone not enjoy one last stop? It's the best book I've read this year and I enjoyed every single page 😍. Interesting how that's on both lists

Yeah when it comes to Lore I really enjoyed it definitely one of my favorites from 2021
But I'm not surprised that some people hated it
I think lore started off good and had potential but then the plot at times felt so random like it was a 5 year old deciding what happens next
my issue with Audie Larue was the ending, It was this whole fun story and then the ending was such a cop out and i was not happy

Literally reading the sequel now and it's basically YA erotica 😑
I loved the Jack the Ripper series and thought kingdom of the wicked was intriguing. The sequel seemed so unfinished? And the twists were so boring and predictable.
I'm definitely one of those people that hates We Were Liars by E Lockhart. Seeing it so much on tiktok confused me lol, so glad I read it as a library book instead of buying it.
I am so excited for tomorrow's video!!
I wish we knew why people didn’t like them
I will ask for more feedback next time! I’m sorry!
@@HaileyinBookland no no! Don’t apologize. I probably could have worded that nicer. I am just curious :)
Totally agree too much hype about Addie LaRue weird end and nonsensical. My sister spoiled and read it NOT width it to me 😅
Worth it
the midnight library might almost be my least favorite book i’ve read ever… it was not doing it for me
I agree with that.
The problem with Siege and Storm is that the Darkling is completely absent of the book 😅
Star Trek Discovery season two got me wanting to read Alice in Wonderland, the whole season is a low-key love letter. I got a really lovely edition and goodness only knows *when* I'll read it, but I plan to give it a real try. Even though the movie freaked me out as a kid, lol!
Least favorite - Yolk anything John Green @ me lol
Favorite - Nancy Drew mysteries, or We Were Liars 😁🥳 finally read this hot, great and twisty mysterious relationship heavy, shallow family life , painful book
I think there are a few big reasons
1. They didn’t connect to addie like others did.
2. They expected it to be fast paced but it was more character than plot driven
3. They didn’t love the romance (valid criticism) or not much smut (people that read a lot of fantasy romance like from blood and ash)
4. They did not fully understand the reason for the slowness, monotony, and repetitiveness of the book - it was in my opinion kind of meant to give us the feeling addie had in hundreds of years (I’ve told this to people and upon reflection some people are very mind blown by it)
5. The hype
I think the pacing of Addie LaRue is what does it. I personally loved it but have seen many people give up because it’s a slow going book. The audiobook is amazing though so I definitely recommend it if you think the slow pace might throw you off!
My vote is definitely for Mexican Gothic. I think I gave it 3 stars and that was generous…..
I hope you do this video next year 😄, and every year after that
I feel so represented.
Addie LaRue?????? nah no way. I loved that book.
i am having deja vu because somehow you always mess up the countdown, its cute
I really liked The silent Patient, don't think it would be for you though!
I feel like most people also don't love my favorite books so you're not alone! However, I have an unpopular opinion on just about everything 😂
Most people haven't heard of my favorite series, which is different from not liking it. It's also an example of where I had hoped YA would still be at this point instead of sailing off a cliff. The series I am speaking of is Vampire Beach by Alex Duval.
without a shadow of a doubt my least favorite book this year was The People We Keep. It was just atrocious.
Don't be insecure about the top, a) I think you're wearing it right, and b) the first thing I thought was how cute it looks!
Ummmmm how do you hate Alice in wonderland? I read the original thanks to you and I’m up to like 16 copies (pathetic I know but working on it lol) it became one of my favorite stories ever! Also love the book thief! Love your Channel! Hope your taking care of yourself! ❤️
Ugh yes I was so disappointed with The Project 😩😩
