It is so hard for me to DNF a physical book that I own, I normally push through it. It is easy to DNF books I get from Libby. I just don’t want to feel like I wasted money on a book I didn’t read/finish.
“I’m going to give myself a pass because it’s me” is such a mood 😂 I’ve started DNFing more this year after watching you do so. I’ve had the same mindset of I need to finish this book even if I’m not enjoying it and it’s been really hard trying to let go of that. Lol loving the bookmas prompts so far! 💜
I was definitely like, "No, you should give stories more time!" And then you said at 100 pgs and I was like, "Oh god, I never give books that long!!" 😂
2021 has definitely been my most unsuccessful reading year. I read the most books I've ever read in one year, but my average rating is down SO much and I DNF'd sooooo many books It's always interesting to hear why you decide to give up on a book.
I DNFed A Deadly Education-or as it's come to be known, A Deadly Exposition-within a couple of chapters. Didn't care for it at all.
I wish I'd kept track of all my DNFs this year, because there were a lot. 😅
I love to DNF! It's very refreshing when you're struggling to finish or just not caring about a book. I feel like a lot of people were disappointed by Lost in the Never Woods.
I had 6 DNFs this year and that's the most I've had in a year :( 2021 was a decent reading year for me. I started DNFing because you recommended it Hailey and it's honestly life changing and saving.
Yeah it inspired me too and its really helpful
I began DNF’ing this year after finding your channel and it’s made my reading experience so much more refreshing. I’ve managed to read more books that I’ve actually enjoyed than end up struggling through a book and ending up in a slump
The only book I DNF'd , not only this year, but since ever,is Looking for Alaska....
that's one of the few john green book i didn't dnf! haha this and TFIOS. everything else from john green was a DNF for me
@@leilanibaby3975 Oh! Somewhat similar situation here lol .I kind of did like tfios and turtles all the way down was a 3 star....I haven't bothered to pick any other books of his😂😂
umm why didnt Hailey post today's video? I mean I hope everything is fine, she never misses a bookmas video.
i was thinking the same, i thought she like schedules the videos so that they go up on time without her actually doing anything
@@damnitaintright could be a technical error or smth. I am kinda freaking out
@@samankhalid1279 same :/
@@samankhalid1279 same for me, maybe everyone having problems because everyone buying stuff on Amazon or lost internet/power. I do hope that she's doing alright.
Very interesting video, Hailey!! My dnf list is one of my biggest-ever this year. The Ones We're Meant to Find was one of my favorites this year, but I totally understand why you - and a lot of other people - didn't like it haha! 😂 Looking beautiful, as always! 💜
i was rewatching your old videos, patiently waiting for this, when i got the notification 😌
Your Bookmas videos make my 'waiting for Christmas" time even better! ❤️❤️❤️
I was so close do DNF’ing Lost in the Never Woods. I got half way through it when I got into a reading slump and I genuinely thought I would not pick it up again. Took like two-three months for me to finally pick it up again and I enjoyed it but I can see why people never finished it/ didn’t like it.
EARLY!!!! You’re absolutely GORGEOUS I’m LOVING Bookmas!!!! Day 7 wow!!!! I loved Whats Not To Love
Thank you for the heads up about all of these and for putting in the effort for bookmas ❤
Hailey is very dedicated and talented.. I watch every video she puts up, I enjoyed last year's Bookmas too ❤️
The thing about Sky Without Stars is that the source material also takes a long time to set things up. It comes by that honestly. The source material is my favorite book of all time, but I know where its shortcomings are
I love your shirt. It looks super soft.--I had a teacher tell me that if I am not sure how I feel about a book or may not like, to read the first chapter and decide from there.
I loved A Pho Love Story it is one of my favorites for this year. I loved listening to the audiobook.
Where bookmas day 8!!!!!! Came on to open my advent calendar lol!
I LOVED this video. I was cracking up-I just love your honesty and you were able to explain all your problems with the books without being at all insulting. It’s so interesting to see why people DNF books. It helps me in ways to see some I’d also DNF or that I’d want to read if the problem was one that doesn’t bother me.
I loved Sky Without Stars! But totally get what you were saying and why some would not also.
I totally have those problems often in enemies to lovers too!
As always, love you and your videos!
The way you feel about Sky Without Stars is how I feel about Scythe
This Bookmas content is wonderful Hailey- we all appreciate your dedication and content planning in your videos as well as your awesome content all year round. I ended up dnfing Lost in the never woods as well- it was just boring and quite disjointed in my honest opinion. I also sadly ended up dnfing Royal Holiday by Jasmine Guillory.
Great Video Hailey and I’m sad you Didn’t Finish Into The Never Woods cause it was actually a great re telling imho But I get it if you weren’t feeling it anymore that’s totally understandable but I’m saying for me I absolutely loved it 🙂 Have a Wonderful Weekend & Merry Christmas 🎄🙂
I really love your videos ❤️💕😍
Happy Holidays Hailey!! 🎄
God! I just love that book shelf!!
i only dnfed acomaf and king of scars but im gonna read them soon i just picked up something else before finishing
My 2 major dnfs of this year was “lore” and “caraval”
I don’t like DNFing but I have stopped beating myself up about. I will, however, go find a synopsis online so I at least know what happened 😂
I feel that; I DNF'd and e copy of a book last year and then read the end in the bookstore. I was like "cool twist, still not going to try to read it again" (I don't remember the book but it was a hyped new release that I found too referential to other properties)
Cute holiday introduction
You look so cute with your hair this way 😍
i forced myself to finish Lost in the Never Woods because i loved Cemetery Boys sooooo much but it was genuinely not worth it. good for you for DNF'ing it. i'll still read the author's future works though!
I also DNFed Lost In The Never Woods because I got in a reading slump around the time of trying to read it. I have nothing against the book itself though so I might give it another chance at some point, idk.
I too was disappointed by "Lost in the Neverwoods" & "A Pho Love Story." I generally do not DNF books. I will put them to the side and plan to get back to them. I did recently go through my DNF's bookcase and unhauled several books that have been on their for years and I know there's no way I'm ever going to finish them.
I really liked Naomi Novik's Spinning Silver, but Uprooted was just ok for me.
I just finished Uprooted. The first half was good but I just really didn't care for it either. Spinning Silver is next on my list.
Both were five star reads for me! Spinning silver is my favorite of the two, but I really enjoyed the second half of uprooted, redeemed the book for me imo, the first part was a little hard to get through but I’m glad I kept at it.
I really need to work on my DNFing. I feel like I must know how it ends! Even if I hate it. I've hate read books before lol. I feel like I'm missing out if I don't finish it. Working on that in the new year
I also DNF'd A Deadly Education. Total stream of consciousness, total confusion.
A series that I dnfed this year and was really sad about was The Raven Cycle. I read the first two books and was 1/3 of the way through Blue Lily Lily Blue when I realized that I wasn’t enjoying myself and decided not to finish the series. I’m so happy so many people love the series but I couldn’t get into it.
Yesss stunning
I do dnf books. The most recent one that I remember was Wicked Fox. I think you are very generous in the amount of time you give a book before dnf'ing it.
Let's advocate DNFing books you don't enjoy!! It's not a crime, it's freeing up so much of your time... and you can actually read books you enjoy!
But I totally understand the feeling bad part. I mean you've spent (sometimes a lot of) money on a book, and then you aren't even finishing it. That's what kept me from DNFing books in the past. But this year, I told myself f it, it's not worth my time. And now I'm a big fan of DNFing :D
btw love the cat
Sky Without Stars was so bad. I had to read it for a tour for the sequel and I wanted to claw my eyes out at some points during reading that book.
I haven’t read “A Deadly Education”, but I have read Uprooted by Naomi Novik and I loved it.
I did not finish Legendborn, The Echo Wife, and Yolk.
I’ve never DNF’d a book before but this year i DNF’d From Blood and Ash >< i want to try again later because I’m more than halfway through and I hate not finishing books! Lol
I'm an avid DNF-er! If I'm not feeling a book, I'll just stop🤷♀️ I also DNFd Deadly Education. I wanted to like it, but the info dump was too much and I wasn't engaged. Other books I DNFd were Legendborn, Graceling, Night Circus, and House of Earth and Blood.
you give the best recommendations! Love your content!!!
I have never DNFd books until this year and I always feel bad and get FOMO. This year I only DNFd 2 - Deacon King Kong and Freshwater. I was around 50% for each of them and just could not get myself to care about them at all.
I saw lost in the never woods blurred out and was so saddened. It had its flaws but the emotions nearly killed me 😭
I want to be better at DNFing books because life is too short and there are only so many books I can read in my lifetime, why waste my time on bad books. But especially when I'm reading a book for a video, it feels like I just have to power through even if I don't like it for the sake of the video! 😩
I started reading at the end like around November and I read a book per day at least so far I dnf 5 books but I feel like in 2022 I might dnf a lot more and I am okay with that
Omg. Ok A Deadly Education was a weird book. I also did not like the stream of consciousness but particular because she was so repetitive and so whiny. And the details of the school and world was just excessive. I am actually going to read The Last Graduate because I am intrigued haha. I have not read Uprooted BUT I have heard that the romance in it was a bit toxic -- like sort of enemies to lovers, bad guy thing but too much -- so I don't think I am going to read it. However, I read Spinning Silver and thought it was amazing. It was an all-time fav for me
I actually didn't dnf a book this year. I DNF'd a few books lar year.
Great video as always!!!
As someone who liked Uprooted and loved A Deadly Education, I think the writing styles/tones/narrators are very different so you might enjoy Uprooted more! (And IMO Spinning Silver is her best work)
I've really enjoyed a lot of Novik's books--loved Uprooted, Spinning Silver, the His Majesty's Dragon series as a whole is very dear--but I didn't even pick up Deadly Education. I just don't like that kind of protagonist or that style of storytelling. I'm a big fan of reading samples, saves a lot of time with these nonstarters. I don't know whether you'll like Uprooted; I tend to be fine with slower plots, but I can say I really loved it when I read it.
My DNF for this year was The Wolf and the Woodsman, a book funnily enough was compared to Uprooted by the publisher (superficial similarities, maybe, but NOT quality), and I really did try. It just meandered from one fairytale element to another for no apparent reason, the forced proximity/enemies to lovers didn't work for me at all b/c the MC was so attracted to the guy all the time despite everything they were going through and it was just...ugh. Worst thing though was they spent most of the part of the book I read riding through the woods on horses and I s2g no-one involved in this book has ever met a horse?? That's the only explanation I can find for it being published with weird lines about her legs being on the horse's "neck" and the guy's legs who's riding behind her being on the "shoulder", or the horses "panting" as they run through the snow. It was like they copied and pasted lines from a dragon riding or a dogsledding scene. It was embarrassing, and eventually so much of a downer that I sent it packing back to the library before the halfway point.
My hangup about DNFing is that I miss out on adding something to my reading challenge. I gotta get over that, because it is freeing. And I gotta be more picky about what I get from the library; that's my source for bleh and meh. I forgot to comment on your previous video with the least favorite book that I actually finished this year, whose title I can't find ATM b/c goodreads is down, because the book was so forgettable that I literally forgot that I read it and then forgot the title after I noticed it when going over this' years books earlier on GR. So much action and twists and worldbuilding, but I never *cared* at all. I generally regret wasting my time, save that sometimes reading a meh book gives me perspective to better appreciate the books I love.
I also DNF books more often if I don’t like it. And also DNF’ed a deadly education because of the writing style.
Most of the time, I give a book 100 pages before I DNF it. If it doesn’t keep me wanting to pick it up at 100 pages, then I move on.✌️
I DNFd My Lady Jane...ik 🥲 I wanted to like it so much but the ethian thing was a major turn off for me... I mean ik y the authors added that theme but it just didn't work out for me....ig fiction isn't really my thing...there's hardly ever any fiction I like
I DNF books all the time. I am that person where if someone says read this I will be like ok…then I start it and quickly find that what the person that recommended it to me likes in a book I do not like in a book.
I think you can tell early on that you won't like a book, for sure. It becomes even more obvious as you get a little further, then it's a trainwreck progressing through and you dread picking it up again. And that happens a lot with Booktube, they hype up so much on this platform before even reading it, then you try the book and it's not for you.
I always forced myself to finish books until last year. With everything going on I decided that life is too short to read books I don’t like and have DNF’d quite a few the last 2 years.
I've DNF Local Woman Missing and The Guest List this year. I'm not normally the type to but I didn't enjoy these but hope to DNF more in the future.
Trying to rebuild that DNF mode honestly😅I've grown stubborn
I find it extremely difficult to DNF. Sometimes I wish I could do it just to liberate myself more with my reading. However, I think I usually have a pretty good idea of what I'm going to enjoy so when I read a book, it's not usually a complete miss. When it's not meshing with me, what I do is put it down and pick up after a while. I've done it with a few books in the past and there were some instances when I ended up enjoying those reads a great deal.
I DNF a book called Hound of God. I wish I DNFed more, just because it always puts me in a slump. But generally I had a good year so I didn't suffer too much
I dnf'd Scythe halfway through cuz I couldn't really connect with the characters, maybe I'll give it another try later on
i recommend giving it another try. In terms of dystopian its up there with the Hunger Games for me, and eventually you'll likely connect with one of the characters
I didn't DNF Game Changer (by the same author) and it was my worst book of 2021 until I read some more yipes books than it. I also feel that the only reason Booktube was hyping it up was that Neal Shusterman wrote Scythe.
i also DNFed Deadly Education by Naomi Novak. I really want to love her books but Deadly Education kept leaving me confused and thinking like this doesn’t make sense. Also the world building was slow and I didn’t honestly love or understand the world inside the book. It had good parts but not enough to want to continue to the end.
i DNF A Deadly Education at 65 pages for many reasons writing style, info dump overload to and the story was moving way too slow among other things
Also I read lost in the never woods and I really feel like it should have been a middle grade bc it felt more like a middle grade and I wish it had been grittier bc that probably would have made it work better as a YA
I actually ended up DNFing Lair of dreams by libba bray, i liked the Diviners but the sequel was such a disapointment. I tried so Hard to get through it because im pretty sure the third book is much better, but I ended up giving up on it like 350 pages in. I definitly gave it a chance through
Thank you. Your comment really helped me decide whether I should invest in Lair Of Dreams or not. I didn't like The Diviners (gave it 3 stars for effort) and I asked around whether the sequels are worth continuing with the series. Now I'll forget all about them and won't feel guilty about it. :)
@@flipfloppoet4377 yeah i think if you didn't really like the first one either the second would be like pulling teeth, also the first book kinda ends in a way where you dont really need to continue, so no harm done right. Glad to be of help haha
Oh you are giving it a very good chance at 100 pages. I stop after the first chapter if it sucks.
Hailey getting all heated about Simmer Down, like that title is not accurate, she is doing the opposite of simmering down. And going off that review I probably won't pick it up, I also am not a fan of enemies to lovers. I hate stories where people who are absolutely horrible get together, because in the real world everyone around them would be yelling about red flags
I read lost in the never woods and honestly you aren’t missing out , it wasn’t great and I only gave it like 3 stars. I didn’t hate it but it wasn’t great . Which I’m so sad about
I know this is not supposed to be funny perse, but this really made me laugh. This frustration was so recognizable as a fellow bookwurm 😂
I was SO excited about A Deadly Education as well! I ended up DNF'ing it. The plot still sounds interesting but the writing is definitely NOT for me
You didn't get far enough in What's Not to Love. The romance between the two characters is fine, and yes I agree their bickering was TERRIBLE, however when they were sweet on one another there was no problem UNTIL the authors had the stupid idea to make it where Alison and Ethan had tohave rivalry as part of their romance or it didn't feel right for t hem, so that ruiend things. However, you CANNOT say they don't belong together if you don't get far enough to see that they kind of do lick without the ickiness.
And yes, it's on my Unhaul shelf, I don't want that book, but it's still better than a number of books I read this year. And I only picked it up because of your channel, just so you know, how hyped you were before you read it.'
Also people who are telling you that you need to get through the first book of a series in order to get to better books are giving you the WRONG advice. The proper way to state it is to suggest to read the good book FIRST, then if you're intrigued enough go back tot he previous. But I guess you sometimes have to be willing to actually try this to understand, and some people seem too afraid to do so, I had the luck to pick up a later book in the series of Here There Be Dragons by James A. Owen first, I really liked it, went back to Here There Be Dragons and it was obvious that if I read that first, I would NOT have continued. A-List possibly too, I read the seventh book first.
The books I dnf this year was
The ballad of songbird and snakes
Turning point by danielle steel
Cemetery boys
That's basically it 😳🤪😱
My reading style was much the same this year. I am too busy for so-so books. Which means, sadly, I didn't finish almost as many books as I actually did. Weird and uncofrtunate, but as you said, liberating. Also, would totally DNF a book about zombies. Sorry, zombie lovers!
Yea I DNF I don’t like to but I do
I totally understand DNFing, and honestly wish I could do it for myself. I just keep holding out hope that it’s going to get better. The only time I’ll DNF is if I feel that a book is really, really unhealthy for me (Horrorstor by Grady Hendrix, for example. Hated that book).
The only book I DNFed was "A little life" because it was so sad I couldn´t get through it!
i also dnfed deadly education
I DNF-d Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman. Just wasn't for me. Maybe I'll pick it up later in the future but....probably not.
I DNF left and right because life is too short to read books you dont enjoy. It's supposed to be a fun hobby and I think a lot of people forget that
🌙❤
I didn't have a great reading year this year with the UK being on lockdown for the 3rd time, my dad was ill, and I was looking for a job and that was stressful so even though I didn't read that much, I didn't DNF any books.
However, I DNF'ed The Royal We by Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan I November. This is a Kate Middleton and Prince William (my favourite couple ❤❤) inspired retelling as the main character Rebecca "Bex" Porter, an American student goes to Oxford university and meets Prince Nicholas (like when Kate met William at Edinburgh university). I DNF it at 25 pages because I didn't like the writing style, and there was a bit too much information. I'm really sad I DNF it but it was the right thing to do. But I love the cover as it shows the bride and groom kissing (like Kate and William im the balcony of Buckingham Palace) 🌟
I dnf but my dnf are not permanent because I dnf because I picked up the wrong book at the wrong time because I’m a mood reader.
I also DNF at 100 pages if I’m not feeling it so I definitely don’t think that’s too quick to give up! If I’ve read 100 pages and it’s still not interesting I do not care anymore 😂
DNFing books is so fascinating to me. I don't do it only because I get distracted and then forget I was reading the book in the first place. Lol. Which I guess is the most unconscious way of doing it, I guess.
I was really pissed off about a deadly education because I bought the owl crate special edition and the questionable race issues piss me off
I never read the book, but I did enjoy some really thoughtful posts online that outlined how most of the stuff people have taken issue with is actually the result of super specific and accurate research that, basically, can appear iffy to people who aren't from the places/cultures being referenced. Wish I had links, but basically, it's not a super clear cut case.
DNF'd books videos help me manage my expectations. Hyped/popular books usually disappoint/fail to impress me. (Example: Six Of Crows, Song Of Achilles). 👎
I DNFed a deadly education after like page 10 😂I did not like the writing. I also DNFed the Cruel Prince
I have many dnfs and I am not mad.... Lol
Uprooted is not it! But spinning silver is so much better, I’d recommend.
Ooo yeah I did not enjoy what’s not to love 😂
I loved Skyhunter, it was one of my favorite duologues this year but as you're not a sci-fi person so much, I get it. Well I DNFed 3 books that I really had high expectations about... The Ten Thousand Doors of January, Goddess in the Machine (which was a sci-fi I was really excited about) and also A Deadly Education, which for its synopsis I was sure I'd like but wel...
I only DNF'd "Less" and i miiiiight dnf "the once and future witches" 😬
I rarely, if ever, DNF books, but this year there was one. A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes for me too. Just didn't like it.
It sucks that you DNF'd so many books. I haven't DNF'd ay books this year, luckily.
