    Great info on this process. I used sand/composte mix last fall on my cool season lawn. It's much better for drainage and a little smoother. My mistake was the mix. It was full of weeds this spring.

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  3 роки тому +2

      That's often the challenge with using topsoil Mark. Depending on how clean the soil is, you might be introducing weeds into your lawn. You can always deal with them after the fact, but it is a pain. Last year I had to deal with some spurge from top dressing work. Thanks for watching the content sir.

    Heck yeah! Job well done, every time...
    don't turn the lawn into a beach 🌴, but Medium even coverage..
    Water that sand and essential G in and you can repeat again next month.. or until the vanity strip starts to smooth out to your liking... right Ron?
    Also Something I don't like about turning the turf into a beach is being forced to take a week and a half off of mowing as to not grind your reel down with sand....

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  3 роки тому +1

      Yep Jack. I'm a fan of lighter top dressings more frequently than turning the lawn into a beach. I've tried both methods and while the beach method can get a smoother lawn faster, you'll get a serious mess if it rains heavily.

    Nice video dude, is there any benefit to using only sand on Bermuda besides the leveling properties?

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  3 роки тому +2

      Mmmm it can help promote spread since sand holds out to heat more than soil. So if you're trying to get an area to fill in, using a bit of sand can help. Just have to make sure you go light. It also helps a ton with drainage. A bit part of why my lawn doesn't stay flooded anymore is top dressing with sand.

    • @RonHenry

      Hi Perpetual Student. I would wait until the lawn is actively growing before top dressing. You definitely want soil temps to be warmer before putting down Arden 15. Do you have irrigation? Great video Ron! Are there drawbacks to leveling with sand only vs. sand/soil mix? Does it need to be done on an annual basis, and would there be an issue with clay soil? We live just outside Portland, OR and it’s great for growing grass but the soil is very heavy clay.

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Jegrand. The benefits of using mostly sand is it does a better job of leveling and holding the result of leveling for longer than using top soil or compost. It doesn't need to be done on an annual basis. There are people that only do it once and call it good. Factors that can cause you to top dress again are the amount of wear the lawn is getting from traffic and drainage. What I find is subsequent leveling jobs require less sand since you're mainly doing touch up work vs. filling in big ruts. Not issue with leveling clay soil. Most of the soil in Georgia is heavy clay. Most people that level their lawns do it either with 100 sand or a 70 / 30 mix of sand and topsoil. Let me know if I can help with anything else. Thanks for watching. 👍😎

      Hi Ru Skates. I do water after sanding. For the first week I water daily to help the grass recover sooner. After that, I go back to my normal watering schedule. Also, Would a rotary mower pick up the sand if bagging?

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Steven. Depends on how big they. In most cases what you're going for is to smooth any sharp bumps to prevent scalping when you mow the lawn. I wouldn't mow the recently sanded areas until the grass recovers. That will help prevent the mower from sucking up the sand you just put down. Thanks for watching.

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Mo D. I would make sure the grass is actively growing so that it recovers faster. Since you’re in the Atlanta area, I would wait until later this month to top dress. It’s also a good idea to aerate the lawn. It helps the sand or top soil integrate better with the existing soil. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.

      Hi Robbie. Most people with St. Augustine don't top dress their lawn. you'll want to mow it as high as possible. Definitely don't want to mow it low. Doing this will stress and damage the grass. It does better with higher heights of cuts. Allyn would likely tell you to mow as high as possible with your rotary.

      @@RonHenry you are telling people that to level out areas they should first put down organic material "to feed the soil" and then sand on top of that. The organic material will break down and they'll be right back to where they started.
      Soil doesn't need to be fertilized, the plants do. Fertilizing the soil causes leaching. The more people that leach products the faster we all have fert bans put in place. Not ok.

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  3 роки тому +1

      Respect your opinion Bryan but if we follow your logic then anyone applying a 70 /30 blend would “end up right back where they started”. That’s simply not the case. The Essential-G we applied is a prill and by volume is far less organic material than what’s in a 70 / 30 mix. It also helps the soil hold on to nutrients vs. promoting leeching. It will be ok. I promise. Thanks for watching sir. 👍😎
