If you can significantly reduce your AGI (which can be done via tax exemptions) you can apply for an income-based payment schedule - I'm not an accountant but this was brought to my attention by an accountant helping file my US return. Maybe something to look into for a future video
I don’t like income based repayment because the interest will swallow you and you will be paying the rest of your life. Back when I only had to pay $800 based on my income per month, I actually would choose to pay $1500-$2000 per month because the interest is so high. Currently the interest is zero though so I’m not paying until I have to or the interest goes back up.
That's a personal question to ask yourself. For me personally, there is nowhere on earth I feel safer to be a jew. The center of the country is mostly stable in terms of security, but the southern and northern regions are closer to the conflict and less secure. But at any point things can escalate. In general, most people living in Israel can live an ordinary and safe life right now as long as you don't go too far north.
Thanks for the video! When you mentioned ‘groceries’ for $80/mo are you including meat, chicken , cheese & eggs or just veggies. Im a Christian and so there is no Law of Return for me - wish israel offered a retirement visa. Im thinking about Haifa: what do you think a 1 bdrm apt w/ utilities would be ciry center & suburbs. Im single. Shalom
I had some text on the screen at a later moment explaining that I also had miscellaneous charges of $121 and that was probably also groceries. so it was really like $200 in groceries most likely. It only included a bit of protein (eggs, a little meat) but not much. I buy all of the produce, veggies, fruits, grains, milk, etc. and my husband buys the protein because he's a bigger protein eater and is more picky and likes to go to his butcher. So this is my personal out of pocket costs for the month because my husband and I keep our finances entirely separate. But, I also would have spent less on produce if I didn't also buy for him, so on average I think $200 seems close to what I would have spent just living alone in that month anyways. Nowadays though, I do spend a bit more. I'll be doing an updated video when we move to Ramat Gan in a few months so stay tuned for that. My expenses have increased quite a bit. Also, if you are American you can be here on a travel visa for 3 months at a time and if you take a brief break and leave briefly, then come back - the clock resets. So as long as you don't need to work or a work visa, you can spend huge chunks of your retirement here if you had a seasonal home. I'm not familiar with Haifa rental prices, but they have a big Christian community there so it sounds lovely for you!
Can you tell me what the cost of living is in a Modern Orthodox community? As well as other expenses? We are seniors so is there an area where it wouldn't be too expensive? I wrote this to you in January 2022 so if you can do a breakdown I will appreciate it. Today Rabah
I'm not familiar with many orthodox communities and the costs of living in them, but it depends on city and it can widely vary. It's tough to say. Also, it depends on the size of the place you are looking for any many other factors.
Aww thanks. If my channel gets to 1K subscribers, I might start a separate channel for behind the scenes life and vlogging and then I could do a video on that topic there!

The Aliyah money isn’t enough to live. And after they cut you off with no help that’s what they did to me. The jobs pay too low to survive there unless you are very rich or have a good business.
The Aliyah isn’t meant to be enough money to live on. It’s just supposed to be a bit of extra money to help with the transition. I agree that some jobs don’t pay so well here but that has been changing quite a bit in the last 2 years! I think salaries will continue to go up at a rapid pace. Some industries like high tech and M&A or finance make really good money. I work for a foreign company as an American lawyer and I make pretty good money relative to average salaries in Israel.

at the age of 39 I was still not able to buy an apartment in Israel (even with a high tech paycheck ) then we relocated to the US and bang after a year we got a family house of our own :-) housing in Israel is pure gouvernment scam they keep housing expensive to get more pennies on taxes by not allowing new constructions to keep up with shyrocketing population growth :-)
Israel doesn't have the amount of land mass that US has and government owns over 90% of land so they decide what's developed/built. There is also over 55,000 per year of new immigrants coming in and most want to live in Jerusalem/Tel Aviv. That drives up cost.
They waive the import taxes on up to two shipping containers of household goods only, but you still have to pay the shipping containers. I had no furniture, only clothes/stuff that fits in a suitcase so the shipping container didn't make financial sense for me.

Currently the interest is zero though so I’m not paying until I have to or the interest goes back up.
The rent is really much, that one month rent can pay for a year rent in a nice location in Nigeria for 3 bedroom very decent city like UYO
Hahaha, you should hear the rents in NYC where I am from

Yep! They certainly are!
Is it Advisable to come to Israel now?
Regardless the war
Nefesh B'Nefesh has a guide to rent costs broken down by cities and towns which may be helpful.
Thank you.
You’re welcome
How much for rent?
I don't pay rent currently, but I do talk about the cost of rent in the two largest cities towards the last third or so of the video!
You need to do one on your hair that hair is amazing :)

Wow that explicitly nice of you. Can I get a job in Israel if I come with visit visa and presently am working in UAE 🇦🇪.
Thanks! I don’t know how work visas are handled in Israel so I’m not sure but must be fun to work in the UAE! Are you in Dubai?

So what is currency exchanged rate?
3.1 USD to the shekel. It used to be 3.7 USD to the shekel before covid but the dollar is losing value with inflation 😢
Where's your ancestry from, Miriam? Are you purely Ashkenazim?
I’m pure Ashkenazi as far back as my family can trace - primarily German Jewish and Polish Jewish, although my fathers side did have family from the Alsace Lorraine region which was a disputed territory between France and Germany for many years. Also, my mother is Mexican by birth but not by blood, but that’s only because her parents were both Polish Jews who escaped to Mexico during the Holocaust so I don’t have any Mexican blood but I do love the culture.
@@miriamstrauss I'm glad your zayda & bubby escaped Poland's Holocaust & USSR communism.
All their stories must be intriguing!
@@stlouisix3 We have some really fascinating stories, for sure. Just knowing their stories and the stories of others during that time taught me at a young age that I am cut from the same cloth as a group of people who have immeasurable strength. Where are you shopping in israel !!??? How much do you eat . We are 2 and it's 1500 min a month !!??
I explain the rent in the second half of the video. I mostly buy only vegetable, eggs and milk. I don’t buy clothes in Israel. I buy clothes only when I visit america.
How much apt
It depends where!
Good morning I am planning to look for a job in Israel how can you advice me how to do it. I am a South Africa living in South Africa.
Rent is high but other expenses are reasonable.
Yes, agreed. Except gas/petrol is high as well, I just don’t drive much :)

at the age of 39 I was still not able to buy an apartment in Israel (even with a high tech paycheck ) then we relocated to the US and bang after a year we got a family house of our own :-) housing in Israel is pure gouvernment scam they keep housing expensive to get more pennies on taxes by not allowing new constructions to keep up with shyrocketing population growth :-)
I plan to do a video on housing in Israel! Agree it’s a really difficult think to buy a home here!
It is not a scam, it is called a free market.
In Canada it is a scam
Israel doesn't have the amount of land mass that US has and government owns over 90% of land so they decide what's developed/built. There is also over 55,000 per year of new immigrants coming in and most want to live in Jerusalem/Tel Aviv. That drives up cost.
This was very informative Miriam. Thumbs up from a fellow creator 😅
Thanks so much ❤️ I’ve got a new video I am in the midst of editing and coming soon ;) hope you subscribe and stick around. 😇

It depends on the industry and ones experience. Some salaries are pretty low, but others quite high. What type of role would you like to know about?
looking for cost of living in Eilat
I think Eilat is cheaper than the rest of Israel. There is no sales tax in Eilat and rent is a bit cheaper.
What about housing costs. Get to the point !
I discussed rent costs! Maybe you missed it.
No cheap but worth it
I agree!
I thought Israel pays for Olim to ship their belongings to Israel. Taking everything piecemeal sounds rather cumbersome.
They waive the import taxes on up to two shipping containers of household goods only, but you still have to pay the shipping containers. I had no furniture, only clothes/stuff that fits in a suitcase so the shipping container didn't make financial sense for me.
Cheaper than the Netherlands :)
I hear that the Netherlands can be pretty pricey!
Why did you leave America ? Maybe make a video on this if you haven’t 😊

Is it true as American isreal will help me make aliaya??? I want to immigrate to isreal. I am jew surviving grandson of a holocaust survivor
Yes! You should reach out to an organization called Nefesh B'nefesh. They help you with the entire application. You can google them and check out their website. it has lots of helpful information about all of the benefits that you would receive if you make aliyah. Once you start your application, they assign you an advisor that you can reach out to with questions and who helps you with the process. It's a bit of paperwork and takes 4-6 months to complete the process, but it's totally worth it!

Lowest salary in israel
I think minimum wage is about 25 shekel per hour, which is about 8 dollars per hour at current exchange rates. However, most people can find a job for about 35 shekel per hour or even more.
