Bláthnaid Raleigh on the celebrated rugby player who raped her with a bottle

- A few days after it happened, Bláthnaid Raleigh was walking around her local shopping centre with her mother.
“I suppose my mum thought it would be a good distraction,” Ms Raleigh told the Irish Independent this week.
“Doing something normal, I suppose... something I always did. While we were walking around, I got this powerful smell, the smell of aftershave. I ran to the toilet and threw up over and over again for at least a half an hour.”
Days before, in the early hours of July 21, 2019, Ms Raleigh - a bright, outgoing 21-year-old - was viciously raped by Jonathan ‘Johnny’ Moran, a rugby player from Mullingar, Co Westmeath.
He had initially tried to force himself on her and when that failed, he reached for a bottle and inflicted injuries on his victim that she still lives with today.

It matters in Ireland where sentencing guidelines and punishment take into consideration the accused's class, how well known his family are, does he have involvement in GAA, ELITE sport etc.
