Middlesbrough v Leicester City 1987-88

Final league game of the 1987-88 season sees Middlesbrough needing to beat Leicester City at Ayresome Park to guarantee automatic promotion to the First Division. Boro's biggest home crowd for around 6 years (how the hell 27k people fit into the crumbling old stadium was anyones guess!) was bathed in the warm early May sun as a carnival atmosphere built up and everyone anticipated a big promotion party would be in full swing by 4:45pm. Hang on...this is The Boro remember!!

I was at Swindon with the Villa, more in hope than expectation. We needed both you and Bradford to slip up at home and to win ourselves, so we thought. We got a nervy 0-0 then had to wait what seemed like an age for your result to come through, not even goal difference to seperate us, bonkers. Was a good Boro side that

I was there. Living in Bristol, every game was an away and I’d seen a lot of interesting grounds. Plymouth’s comes to mind as particularly grim but I’m sure Ayresome Park has some poor memories for away supporters. Winning at Barnsley was a real high and that wonderful Saturday afternoon, we trooped in believing we were already promoted. It wasn’t to be. We walked in to a party and left a funeral.
It says something about that team’s character that they picked themselves up and won through the playoffs. A season to be remembered for the good things, and that game.
