    I watch your videos all the time whether I have that specific problem or not because watching the way you scientifically diagnose each step and the way you present your thought process makes me a much better craftsman no matter what I/m doing...mechanical work or anything hands on1 Don't ever let any negative comments discourage your methods, you rock and really appreciate the time you put into each video. I was pleased to know your in Denver, I live in Castle Rock so you represent Colorado in style!

    I thought it was great . Here because my van stalled out and never started again. Tested fuel voltage first because I'm stupid ,seen low voltage and replaced the pump. Still no start. Then checked coil. No spark. Replaced the coil. Still no spark. And now I'm here hahaha. I think the best part besides me learning a lot, was the end of the video. Completely support what he said. Hard enough working on a car let alone positioning a camera all different angles and editing . Guy did a great job. Even got on the floor for us all. What's to dislike

    • @mike-cl1mm
      @mike-cl1mm 9 днів тому

      I am curious, why you saw low voltage at the fuel pump and replaced the pump? Not trying to make fun of your situation. I think you need to think about that. It’s a good learning point.
      Should have checked for pressure or just listen hear it run maybe even with low voltage ..
      again , I am just trying to help you learn , that is or was a good lesson ould have saved time and money next time ! Good luck in the future , we are all here to learn something. Well most of us

    Thank you for the very interesting and educational video. I really enjoyed it. I was an industrial electrician with troubleshooting as my main duty in the job and I know from experience how frustrating a problem can be and yet how simple it can appear after the fact. Hats off to you for a fine job. The element of time, or a lack of it, can add a dimension to the problem.
    Again, thanks, John Studinski

    Love the in-depth troubleshooting. As an aircraft mechanic I can tell you there is nothing worse than a professional parts changer - prove the fault and learn something along the way. Some people don't have the electrical/electronic background to do that though. Keep setting them straight!

    • @SchrodingersBox
      @SchrodingersBox  8 років тому

      Will do!! I'm on an airplane every-other-week... and I know there are parts changers in that field as well. Several times I've been on planes that had to return to the airport back-to-back due to improper repairs. Most recently was a bathroom smoke alarm that kept going off when we hit 5000ft. 3 times they couldn't diagnose it.

    Your spark test for the coil is EXACTLY what I needed.. Tahoe been setting for 3 years doing a pcm swap to the 0411 as I thought I had a bad pcm.. Was a bad ignition control module and your test was the ticket to diagnose. Autozone sold me a bad one apparently as I started with coil first... Thanks for the lesson.

    I agree with you talking and help others to learn and help to eliminate the problems . Like you said the visual inspection first of all the wires would have saved time but we never think of the first things sometimes But i really enjoyed you video and I have been working in my shop for over 50 years now, and I learned from your video. You show me a man that doesnt look for help or read books and I will show you a mechanic that will just throw parts at problems and doesnt do justice. Never sell anyone anything they dont need , for if you do like you want o be treated, then the customer will come back for many years to come and end up buying more over the years and your reputation is on the line also . word of mouth is still the Best advertising in the world, and Trust is what you are building . God Bless and Thanks JW. .

I dont have anything at the other wire going to the coils that comming from the computers coil driver. I tested a couple coil wires coming out the ecm. I'm not a thumb's downer but you said not to be a coward and to leave feedback so here it is, these are my thoughts.
    I love what you do and the exhaustive way you explain everything detail for detail. I sit here as a learner watching the teacher. My only gripe and the only thing that does get on my nerves a little about your videos is that you bitch too much about what people say in the comments. Honestly, you're a top mechanic/technician, that's easy to see. You know exactly what you're doing and why you're doing it, so why do you care about what people say in the comments. You've got nothing to prove to anyone, you're at the top of your game.
    Let the armchair mechanics write what ever they like and just teach, enlighten and entertain.
    Because most people are just here to learn something and aren't detracting you and aren't thumbs downing you. No matter what you do or how you do it there will be someone who says they can do it better, much like armchair athletes, so don't give them as much airtime as you do.
    Anyway, I've said my two cents, I hope you don't mind. You may not like it but I say it honestly and without malice.

    • @SchrodingersBox
      @SchrodingersBox  8 років тому

      I appreciate your comments and they are well written but my philosophy is different. I believe ignorance MUST be challenged if it is to be changed. There is no evidence in human history that ignorance changes when it is simply disregarded.
      If I can challenge even one ignorant person to think about their position, it is more powerful than helping hundreds of people like yourself who will benefit regardless of the medium or presentation.
      I can agree to disagree on this one.

      Jonathan Davidson That's a pretty good bumper sticker but I have proven conclusively numerous times it is not actually a true statement.

      Not a bumper sticker or a statement, but a proverb. The difference between a wise man and a fool is not intelligence. The fool says in his heart, "there is no god." The beginning of wisdom is fear of the lord.

    Very interesting and involved, but good lessons. Diagnosis on these types of issues can be tough, so your input is greatly appreciated. Of course visual inspections on wiring are helpful, but it can be very hard do a 100% visual inspections on all wires, and even if you find a suspect wire, there still needs to be a confirmation if that is the "true issue" or not.

    That's a good case, it's fun to watch you think the problem through. When you started the investigation you reminded me of an experience I had 20 years ago. On a really cold day my Ram wouldn't start, though starter motor cranking was OK. Since the starter motor worked, I made the assumption the battery was fine. So, I put my spark tester on a plug wire and I saw no spark. That led me to the false conclusion I had a spark problem. I asked a neighbor help pull my truck into my garage and I charged the battery overnight. Next morning, the truck was back to normal! In the Dodge, it's possible to lose spark from a weak battery, leading to false clues.... Since then I've found excuses to fully charge the battery before wasting time on misleading evidence.

      +spelunkerd Yes no doubt- a weak battery causes all kinds of challenges for sure! Its always good to remove variables as you know and a weak battery introduces many of them for sure!

    I'm having the same issue. Crank no start. Power to coil tho. Love the last comment you gave. Lol funny. Hopefully I chase it down. Notice distributor gear is worn out. So getting new distributor first then chase down no spark. I believe I have a open to crank sensor too. Great video.

    Let me first say Thank You for this Video. I was working behind another mechanic who was swapping parts...Trying this, Trying that...he had a put on anew coil, new CrankPS, new CamPS and he had determined the ECU was bad due to the no start.
    I had thought there was an issue with the theft system and BCM, but the light was not on. I noticed during cranking that I was not getting any tach movement and this lead me to investigate the Crank PS...when I looked at it, I only saw 2 wires...the purple wire in the center, and the yellow wire.....I was like ok, The purple is my ref volt, and the 2 outside have to be tach and ground....anyway, further investigation lead to the yellow wire strands touching the purple wire strands,. Headed to Autozone and got a pigtail, replaced it and the engine started.
    Without this video I would still be diagnosing WTF happened. I have a new fondness for the 4.3 and I cant wait for the next 4.3 adventure.
    Keep up the good work...I love your explanations an humor....your information is priceless!!!
    Kenneth

    To counter the thumb sucker(downer) cowards just disable the public counter visibility.
    It will remove their incentive.
    Good case, excellent video.
    To be factually accurate, you did a visual inspection when you opened the hood and observed there was an engine present... ;)
    Ignore the detractors, you have not presented anything to be ashamed of and if you feed them they will only proliferate.
    Happy New Year to you, Corynne and Schrodinger.

      @SchrodingersBox  9 років тому +6

      +patw52pb1 ROTF yes if I ever get a car that I find there is no spark due to the absence of an engine, I will then 100% agree a visual inspection should have been my first step.
      Hell even the brake clean guy would have diagnosed it when 100% of the brake clean ended up on the garage floor.

    As a mechanical engineer I appreciate this input to diagnose a very similar situation with my GMC safari AWD with the 4.3 v6. Instead of diagnostics I did the normal stuff like throw parts at it! I changed the coil and cap/rotor today and didn’t fix my no start issue. I easily diagnosed no spark by simply shooting starter fluid into the throttle body. Not even a pop. I considered replacing the ICM but now that I’ve watched this I’m gonna get my electric meter out and invest in a spark tester thing!! I have a test light. Again I’m a mechanical engineer but by no means a vehicle mechanic. Give me an elevator? Hvac system? Electrical issue in A 5 story building I’m your man! Thanks for this really detailed information! I’m definitely thinking outside the box wrench!!

      there is no point in doing that since different cars have different color codes. You cannot think of but by "this or that color wire". You have to think of it in terms of "bypassing the signal" or "shorting the signal to ground".

I dont see whats so annoying about an honest, thorough, logical diy mechanic walking us through a not-so-easy diagnosing of a problem, coming out of it not getting his client to spend $ unnecessarily, by being a f#%king parts changer. Kudos for having integrity man - NOBODY wants a hack or a ripoff for an auto mechanic.
