First of all let me say thank you for for restoring my faith in humanity for providing information at this level without charging anything. My name is Paul and i have been into automotive diagnostics and repair for no less than 25 years.. I have allmost no formal training what so ever and trying to get the info to be able to trouble shoot and repair has been near impossible to obtain, and this is the best resource i have found to date. I have never been able to get into any sort of class for this type of training and this is awesome. Thank you again.

i agree with most of the steps ( well actually all of them), except. the first step should be to try starting fluid. this will tell you if your dumbass just towed the car come because the wife ran it out of gas and cleared the odometer (guage stuck at 1/4). would have saved me $200.
I wouldn't argue that, and have used that method many times. In this case, since I walked Pete through most of these steps over the phone the day before, I knew where we were with the vehicle.
I'm 65 and already a retired master electrician but if I was a young person I would dive into this kind of work with both feet. There is always going to be a limited number of people who understand how to both use logic to diagnose, AND understand and use the technology that allows one to see inside these electronic/computerized systems. A person who can do this could build a successful business and be their own boss. We are never going to see carburetors or points and condensers again so there is huge opportunity here to be in demand. I am SO reminded of the diagnosing and repairs I did in my own career as I watch you and Eric and Ivan and Keith use logic and technology to ferret out the answers. Love it.
Watching you work reminded me of the old days when I worked for Xerox. I worked with the most awesome mentor and teacher ever, Rick D'Angelo. He was thorough and precise as you are. A broken wire can be repaired/ replaced in a number of different ways depending on time restriction, location of the repair and customers budget. Too many ppl already focusing on the repair rather than the step by step fault finding which was shown and can be used on on another no-start vehicle. Great Video using basic tools.

This has to be the most thorough troubleshooting I have ever seen. It is one thing to troubleshoot a complex circuit, its another thing to teach it. Bravo.
We'll done as always Scanner Dannner, everything you showed is exactly what I learned in Mechanic school in 1991. I still used the exact same procedures today. You run the show on computerized engine control systems etc and handle your content like a real boss. Keep it solid like you do God Bless brother.
Got to share this one with you.... I bought a 2005 Equinox for my daughter...it looked ok.... the next day the CEL comes on and would not stay running, so I run code and it points to the EGR.... I run Data Stream and at idle the ECM is calling for the EGR to open at 100% and it goes down as I increase idle.....since I know the 2005 has a TSB for the EGR I surmise that whoever switched out the EGR and harness wired it up backward.....that's what I found and I fixed it and had a good running vehicle!

I got it back and it finally started today!!! I told you what the car was doing and you reached back out to me...that was it!!! you reached back... out to me...and helped me... thank you!!! I took the manifold off to see what the mechanic had done to my car....the first thing I notice is that the two 12mm bolts that mount it down in the back are missing...I rode my old school pedal bike to the Bronx and bought two 12mm bolts from the mechanic that had left them out. He said they weren't there when he worked on it...I knew that wasn't true because I put them there myself... long story short.....you are inspiring!!!!.. don't stop!!!.. keep doing what you do....again, thank you.. Awesome educational video. I am up against this scenario,, 2006 Saturn Ion 2.2. Starter cranks over engine, No Visible Rpm Gauge movement,, smell fuel under hood,, so I am ruling out delivery from tank to engine,, a few pops of engine, no symptoms at all. Car sat for a period 9 Days of time through Cold snap of 1 to 10 degrees. No OBD 2codes relating to failed Crankcase position Sensor errors or the like. This video will help immensely to rule out other possible causes. Thanks, I enjoyed the learning experience. Great real time real life trouble shooting. This video is key to ruling things out.

You're a legend but as we used to discuss before I don't use a test probe because of that reason that the ground always comes off I like a meter to show me the exact voltage different ways of troubleshooting as long as we get to the root of the problem you're the legend

A mini van came in on the hook. Couple of guys threw their hands up. Me being new but the most experienced asked for the job. In 30 seconds I had the engine running. The fuel gauge was stuck and the van was out of gas. I squirted some carb cleaner down the booster hose, vroooom. Even before I do electrical checks (except the battery,all electrical problems start at the battery) I perform this carb squirt test,saves a lot of time.

Thanks for this. I had my '99 Montana van towed to the shop for what I thought was the fuel pump. Turns out it was NOT. The father and son team have been working on it for over 3 weeks trying to figure it out. The son has been doing most of the diagnostics and told me he thinks it's one of the modules, but after watching this, I'm not so sure. Wish you could call him and give him a few pointers over the phone....oh well....
Thank You! I have been searching and searching to find a video that just might help me. My Envoy has been down for just over a week now, I have been out there every day trying to figure it out. At the end of a long disappointing day out with my car I would be at my computer searching for a video that might point me in the right direction, most of the videos stopped with a bad fuel pump, which I knew mine was working good. I really liked your methods to diagnostics, your method was easy to understand and easy to follow. And it was spot on to what my problem was, within 1 1/2 hours I located my problem. I greatly appreciate the great videos you put out. Keep up the great job and thank you again.
@@ScannerDanner I can not take all the credit, I am always used to it being a part going bad that starts out costing me over $150. I would never have thought it to be a bad wire (costing me less than $5.00 to fix). I agree with you on troubleshooting from schematic when you go to the fuse that's connected to The load side that fuse all you have to do is go to the other side of the fuse to tell you if you have b+ if you have b+ on that side that means everything has been activated in the relay and the PCM is giving a ground to the relay at one shop that'll tell you everything me and you promote the same electronics on our channels in automotive it's good to see someone who knows the basic foundation of electronics
I'm pretty sure that one was an accident. They do mess with me at times and it's all good. You have to have fun sometimes right? There have been times where I get pissed, but it's breif
I like your videos man, very informative. I'm just curious what kind of tool do you use to find a short in a circuit that is causing the fuse to open? Splice sleeves(butt connectors), whatever people choose to call them, will work fine as a repair to a circuit like this. GM uses these in their connector repair kits when you have to splice in a new connector, I used them hundreds of times with no issues at all. Don't buy the cheap no name ones at wally world and you won't have a problem.

I see no issue butt connector. Solder joints (esp unsupported) will weaken and break before a proper crimped joint. Only solder joint I'd even consider in a high vibration environment like a engine compartment is a NASA style lineman's splice. Marine butt connectors are the way to go. If you insist on solder, get a marine style butt connector with solder.
I've heard of those. So there is solder inside of the butt connector and when you heat it, not only does it act as a shrink wrap, but then it melts the solder? It seems you would have to get it too hot for the plastic before the solder would melt?
A teacher than can also do! Takes the mystery out of the theory. Thank you so much. I would get some electrical tape and wrap the exposed wires like the butt-end of a hockey stick so's the wires will be better than OEM protected.
You and Pete did a great job on that one. It seems the newer the vehicle the more wire chafing problems i see. I use a good visual inspection of wiring more than ever these days.
Indeed time is money. A did not mean any disrespect to SD. And yes taking the fuse block up and make it wide open. But in my opinion I have done it and yes with heat shrink marine grade with the same sealant the bonds with the insulation. The trick is put more wire into it. And wrap the loom back together. I also add a piece of hard plastic under my wrap to keep the movement down to a minimum. 30 plus years of repair under my belt. ASE master also.
I do high end repairs. Cars in So California last bit longer and so the repair must last. I offer two year warranty 24k miles. Got to stand behind a repair that would make others say.... Wow. That was over kill.
i love your test light methode, i learned from you and i implement on my jobs and made the diagnostic very easy specially for us mobile mechanic working outside tools like this cheap and easy to carry is a great alternative
jesus christ people, the repair is 100% acceptable but not text book.. you could pull the fuse box by undoing those 8mm bolts and you will have better access on that connector, given the intake manifold is corroded like that, the chance of breaking few locking connector on that fuse box is very high, so will you risk a $1 repair over a possible fuse box or fuse box connector damage???

then your using cheap solder or not heating the joints correctly and getting cold solder joints... ive never ever in 30 years had a solder joint go bad or crack....

Found this video and another from this guy. Its 746am and 708 am i finished this video. Wifes truck is running again but i did not find the broken wire nor determine faulty relay but it is between the two. Same area but might be the wire coupler connection that is moving about or the fuel relay. I swapped all relay of the same type and some square 40a fuses. If it does happen again after i put new relays in than it will be a wire(s) within half foot of the fues box. Now on top my pickup which is box ,wore , or fuel pump. Lol whish me luck here in 2024 as i just noticed thos os 7 years ago but best by far of how to execute tracing a no start step by step
Good Video As Always Paul, good way of diagnosis with just a test light mostly, to me the tests you ran actually covers the basic DIY test to find out where to start and narrowing down to chasing a wire gremlin.

just strtd watching auto diagnostics this year started with ETCG > Ratchets and wrenches > South main auto > Motoyam82 and now you! You guys are the real deal!
OK, so the fact that the car runs fine if/when it fires up only rules out a few things, like maybe fuel pump and pressure..? There is still this laundry list of circuits to trouble shoot as to why the car is not quite able to reach that point. Scanner Dan is so thorough. He's a damn good teacher!
That's a great tool. Of course the skills and understanding of circuit design is most important but I love tools! Okay, it was cool to find the broken wire too.
Ground is of utmost importance when testing electrical circuits. What I do is take some short scrap wire, find a bolt, screw or nut, loosen it and loop the scrap wire around it and tighten. Now I know my ground is good. I then use the other end of the wire to connect my ground .

89 s15 GMC jimmy, once in awhile starts with key, if it doesn't start immediately, it won't start until popping the clutch, cranks fine, helps if leave the key on for a few MINUTES before cranking. But not always, speedometer quit working, can hear fuel pump, but no spark or fuel using key only. Also temp sensitive for starting. Changed relays on firewall, been frustrating and my friends getting tired of towing me to get it started, usually starts popping the clutch within 3 turns of the tire, but every now and then takes several laps around the parking lot (big restaurant parking lot)

A mini van came in on the hook. Couple of guys threw their hands up. Me being new but the most experienced asked for the job. In 30 seconds I had the engine running. The fuel gauge was stuck and the van was out of gas. I squirted some carb cleaner down the booster hose, vroooom. Even before I do electrical checks (except the battery,all electrical problems start at the battery) I perform this carb squirt test,saves a lot of time.
Brilliant. Always enjoy your videos and the enthusiasm gives me the confidence to tackle these sorts of jobs myself. P.s "more European cars please Mr danner" would be the icing on the cake as we say in the UK.
The U-activate circuit tester made light work of that job. I can't seem to find such a versatile tool from a UK supplier. Great Diag as always.

Thanks for this. I had my '99 Montana van towed to the shop for what I thought was the fuel pump. Turns out it was NOT. The father and son team have been working on it for over 3 weeks trying to figure it out. The son has been doing most of the diagnostics and told me he thinks it's one of the modules, but after watching this, I'm not so sure. Wish you could call him and give him a few pointers over the phone....oh well....

Thank You! I have been searching and searching to find a video that just might help me. My Envoy has been down for just over a week now, I have been out there every day trying to figure it out. At the end of a long disappointing day out with my car I would be at my computer searching for a video that might point me in the right direction, most of the videos stopped with a bad fuel pump, which I knew mine was working good. I really liked your methods to diagnostics, your method was easy to understand and easy to follow. And it was spot on to what my problem was, within 1 1/2 hours I located my problem. I greatly appreciate the great videos you put out. Keep up the great job and thank you again.

@@ScannerDanner I can not take all the credit, I am always used to it being a part going bad that starts out costing me over $150. I would never have thought it to be a bad wire (costing me less than $5.00 to fix). You get most of the credit for Point me in the right direction and for showing me how to test to find out what to even look for! Thanks again Sir.

I agree with you on troubleshooting from schematic when you go to the fuse that's connected to The load side that fuse all you have to do is go to the other side of the fuse to tell you if you have b+ if you have b+ on that side that means everything has been activated in the relay and the PCM is giving a ground to the relay at one shop that'll tell you everything me and you promote the same electronics on our channels in automotive it's good to see someone who knows the basic foundation of electronics

I like your videos man, very informative. I'm just curious what kind of tool do you use to find a short in a circuit that is causing the fuse to open? Splice sleeves(butt connectors), whatever people choose to call them, will work fine as a repair to a circuit like this. GM uses these in their connector repair kits when you have to splice in a new connector, I used them hundreds of times with no issues at all. Don't buy the cheap no name ones at wally world and you won't have a problem.
I have a few different tools for that. One is basically a circuit breaker and you follow the needle sweeps like a compass
That sounds like the same one I have, it works really well.

I see no issue butt connector. Solder joints (esp unsupported) will weaken and break before a proper crimped joint. Only solder joint I'd even consider in a high vibration environment like a engine compartment is a NASA style lineman's splice. Marine butt connectors are the way to go. If you insist on solder, get a marine style butt connector with solder.
I've heard of those. So there is solder inside of the butt connector and when you heat it, not only does it act as a shrink wrap, but then it melts the solder?
It seems you would have to get it too hot for the plastic before the solder would melt?
Yes, there is a solder ring inside the adhesive lined heat shrink connector. "Solder splice" would be the term to search.

I would get some electrical tape and wrap the exposed wires like the butt-end of a hockey stick so's the wires will be better than OEM protected.

You and Pete did a great job on that one. It seems the newer the vehicle the more wire chafing problems i see. I use a good visual inspection of wiring more than ever these days.

Indeed time is money. A did not mean any disrespect to SD. And yes taking the fuse block up and make it wide open. But in my opinion I have done it and yes with heat shrink marine grade with the same sealant the bonds with the insulation. The trick is put more wire into it. And wrap the loom back together. I also add a piece of hard plastic under my wrap to keep the movement down to a minimum. 30 plus years of repair under my belt. ASE master also.
I do high end repairs. Cars in So California last bit longer and so the repair must last. I offer two year warranty 24k miles. Got to stand behind a repair that would make others say.... Wow. That was over kill.
could have twisted them together and wrapped it with chewed bubble gum, it would probably outlast the car from the looks of it :))

i love your test light methode, i learned from you and i implement on my jobs and made the diagnostic very easy specially for us mobile mechanic working outside tools like this cheap and easy to carry is a great alternative
jesus christ people, the repair is 100% acceptable but not text book.. you could pull the fuse box by undoing those 8mm bolts and you will have better access on that connector, given the intake manifold is corroded like that, the chance of breaking few locking connector on that fuse box is very high, so will you risk a $1 repair over a possible fuse box or fuse box connector damage???

dude i would never use butt connector on computer circuits. i would solder and use shrink tube. but real good troubleshooting

Eventually the solder would break due to vibration. Heat shrink butt connectors are a good alternative!
I've seen too many solder joints crack. Heat shrink butt connectors are the go for me.
then your using cheap solder or not heating the joints correctly and getting cold solder joints... ive never ever in 30 years had a solder joint go bad or crack....

Its 746am and 708 am i finished this video.
Wifes truck is running again but i did not find the broken wire nor determine faulty relay but it is between the two.
Same area but might be the wire coupler connection that is moving about or the fuel relay.
I swapped all relay of the same type and some square 40a fuses. If it does happen again after i put new relays in than it will be a wire(s) within half foot of the fues box.
Now on top my pickup which is box ,wore , or fuel pump.
Lol whish me luck here in 2024 as i just noticed thos os 7 years ago but best by far of how to execute tracing a no start step by step

Good Video As Always Paul, good way of diagnosis with just a test light mostly, to me the tests you ran actually covers the basic DIY test to find out where to start and narrowing down to chasing a wire gremlin.
Top notch troubleshooting and repair, some will disagree with but connectors however I see no issue when done properly in locations like this. Well done!!!! For some odd reason I had a flash back from a later video you did, But face *but face 😁Thanks for sharing Paul

OK, so the fact that the car runs fine if/when it fires up only rules out a few things, like maybe fuel pump and pressure..? There is still this laundry list of circuits to trouble shoot as to why the car is not quite able to reach that point. Scanner Dan is so thorough. He's a damn good teacher!
That's a great tool. Of course the skills and understanding of circuit design is most important but I love tools! Okay, it was cool to find the broken wire too.

Ground is of utmost importance when testing electrical circuits. What I do is take some short scrap wire, find a bolt, screw or nut, loosen it and loop the scrap wire around it and tighten. Now I know my ground is good. I then use the other end of the wire to connect my ground

89 s15 GMC jimmy, once in awhile starts with key, if it doesn't start immediately, it won't start until popping the clutch, cranks fine, helps if leave the key on for a few MINUTES before cranking. But not always, speedometer quit working, can hear fuel pump, but no spark or fuel using key only. Also temp sensitive for starting. Changed relays on firewall, been frustrating and my friends getting tired of towing me to get it started, usually starts popping the clutch within 3 turns of the tire, but every now and then takes several laps around the parking lot (big restaurant parking lot)
