SteamOS for PCs will be the true game changer. I care about privacy and I have Linux and custom Distros on ALL my devices, so when SteamOS launches it likely won't replace my Main OS (GarudaLinux) but it'll finally lead to Linux being on par with Windows in terms of Plug'nPLay/Ease-of-Use. Especially since we'll see the new NexusModApp will drop around that time. With the growing public hostility towards Microsoft/Bill Gates and IoT social control Linux will be the escape route, and will dominate the Gaming market by 2030. I'm sure of it. So many other distros will benefit from this and no one will have an excuse not to run Linux as their daily driver!
It is hard for me to switch from Windows to Linux. I don't know how you did it, but Windows 11 is not even good anymore! (Honestly it never was, I just gave it a chance)

Rather than a steam console or PC under my TV I just want a steam deck with a either an oculink port or a thunderbolt 5 port, if thunderbolt 5 will work well with external GPUs. I have a WinMax 2 and use an external 3090 when I have it home. I just want a dock, kinda like the switch, for my steam deck but have an option to have a external GPU for more power when I'm home. The AMD APUs are great for small screens but when I'm home on my huge TV it would be nice to have more power.
that leaked lenovo legion is what the steamdeck should look like. I'm most likely replacing my deck oled with that lenovo (the linux based one). It looks very clean without the horrendous trackpads the SD has, and a proper button/stick placement.
My secondary PC with my 1050 has had SteamOS installed for years now, ever since the first version got leaked. Sits underneath my TV I use it for Emulators and older games.
I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if the difference between the white and black models came down to symbols for the buttons and the default operating system. If so, you could convert one to the other just by installing the other OS.
In fairness to Microsoft they created a flatpak on day one for Xcloud controller compatibility. No other third party big company has sunk resources to make partial compatibility. Linux will never run the xbox app because the entire ecosystem is built in windows because they're owned by Microsoft. That's their specialty and linux is still only 4% of the market. So let's celebrate Microsoft for doing what they did which no other company did.
Well, no IT degree needed for Bazzite on normal PC Hardware. If you have an AMD or Intel ARC GPU you are fine with a normal steamdeck experience. If you have an Nvidia card you covered with Bazzite but don't have the option of gamescope-session (SteamDeck gaming mode), but do have a normal Desktop session and games work fine there as well .... just not as streamlined as with gamescope-session. The real issue here is Nvidia having such crap drivers in comparison to their competition on Linux. If you want a gaming system that also has gamescope session like the steam deck, AMD/Intel hardware works well. Nvidia just limits you to having to use Desktop mode (Also you can use Steam BPM from the steam client in Desktop mode and its a similar experience to gamescope-session)
I haven't played Call of Duty ever since Advanced Warfare. I have stopped buying that game. However I do play Battlefield 3 /4 on my Steam Deck OLED with Windows!
I never found that frame generation added latency. What I found was that if I had 30fps without frame gen, the latency I experienced using frame gen felt the same as 30fps, but the image smoothness looked like 60fps. This can give a false sense of increased latency as the game now looks smoother, but inputs are still only running at 30fps.
The only thing that holds me to Windows right now is the fact that VR Support for my Quest 2 is not there (AFAIK) and wheel and pedals drivers for simracing.

I tend to agree with you on the frame generation stuff. Even on my laptop with a 4090, I tend to turn off DLSS frame gen, it just feels like I get a smoother picture with it. Unfortunately, I think frame gen isn't gonna be great with the Deck until it natively supports FRS 3.1. I think 3.0 is a good start and there are some companies who do it well, but most companies seem to have skipped 3.0 in favor of 3.1, and I mean, really, why wouldn't they have? FRS 3.1 came out so quickly after 3. 0 that it seems like the only people with good implementations of 3.0 were those who adopted 3.0 per-release. Fortunately/Unfortunately it seems like FRS 3.1 is a technology that leap-frogged itself too quickly. It's tough but sometimes technology does that and those who are usually on the cutting edge end up having to play catch-up. Unfortunately those training and development costs have to be absorbed somewhere when it comes to corporate America, meaning the bigger they are, the harder it is to turn on a dime and the longer it takes for our games to come out with the features we want (and in some cases, need) to make certain technologies viable for our games. (My goodness that was a really wordy way for me to say I agree with you!!)
I'm more interested in the big new legion go myself... Big oled screen, improved ergonomics, more performance with strix point, more memory... I hope all the leaks pan out and it's not too expensive (I'm hoping not over 900), and that Bazzite will work on it well (or we get a steam os version there as well which would be even better but leaks said no :( )
When I'm buying a handheld I'm buying it for steamOS not crappy windows and it feels so much better and faster and don't have bloatware running in the background.
My only gripe with valve is the leased software trend. Eventually someone will make GOG seamless where you actually own your games. That lawsuit will happen sooner than later. Also they sell matte screen protectors so you can just upgrade the SSD.
So Microsoft has been making a lot of overtures towards opening up the Xbox to being more like PC, and merging Xbox into PC - which, along with the supposed Xbox handheld, indicates that these days Microsoft is competing far more against Valve, than they are against Playstation. After all, Playstation can just muscle them out of the console space - but Proton. That has FAR wider reaching implications for MS as a whole. If Valve wants to really gain the edge while making Steam OS officially available on multiple devices - I think it would be wise of them to open up game pre-configurations to the community in the same way that controller remapping is. This way, people who do want the more console like interface don't have to worry about optimizing their games themselves. They can just pick their hardware platform from a drop-down list, read the description, and select the one they want. Obviously, this won't work on user-built PCs where hardware configurations are far too numerous for even the community to account for - but for popular laptop models, handheld PCs, and even the Xbox if MS is serious about letting Steam in their ecosystem? It'd be huge, and not something that Microsoft could easily emulate. I'm sure they'd try if the feature turned out to be as useful as I suspect it would - but in true Microsoft fashion, it would be a vastly more limited (and more buggy) experience than what Valve would offer.
Steam os only makes sense on subpar performance handhelds, you aint gonna get a massive boost running steamos over windows on a dedicated gaming rig with a discrete gpu. Come on.. 😂
