Completely agree - that was a pleasure both to listen to & watch. The first 21 sec were a nice teaser to this surf player. I like the switching layout of the JM but, alas, AV65 all the way for the pickups. Again, TERRIFIC job.
Nice playing & a good comparison. Both are fantastic. Marr’s Jag is really well rounded on the frequency train. Less treble & harshness. 65 is obviously more “True” to a vintage Jag. I would love to own both but my vote goes to the Marr.
Both sound great. I don't know if it's because the 65 is louder in the video or just more trebly but I think that is why people are liking it more. When you hear it in real life, the Johnny Marr is trebly but not too trebly and sounds just right. Like I said though, both sound fantastic. PS...I have the Johnny Marr and I chose it over many other non Strats and Teles because I loved the sound..and the feel...and Johnny Marr.
@@cosmojonesmusic That's killer man! I was debating on getting the Olympic White, but really didn't want another Olympic White guitar. As I put it in the cart, I went back to the page to get a strap, and as I clicked back on the cart, it was no longer available. Haha!
the johnny mar one seems more compressed and less trebly. sounds really good honestly, but the 65 definitely has the TRUE jag tone. as much as the brightness might bother some people, thats just their nature. i also dont like how the johnny mar one feels because the bridges are usually much higher, and the mustang bridge is fine but for some reason the 65 is much lower in placement usually.
@EndofMusic he also runs a chorus. I’m bit of a Marr fan and use some of his sounds to make my own tunes up. If you set the guitar to be a bit more rounded and less trebly then engage the chorus it lifts it again and adds a bit of higher end/clarity back in but doesn’t sound too thin 👌
Both sound great, the Marr is more well rounded, where as the 65 seems to be harsher and have more extreams between settings. for me im shooting for the 65, but the marr is definitely cool. heck id like to have both
I like them both equally definitely different tones. I'm more of a strat guy never really payed attention to the Jags but after this demo and all the tones out of them I'm in.
Thanks a lot for uploading this! I didn´t have a chance to try the ´65 Jaguar, but this comparison convinced me that I really like its more "distorted" kind of voice. I view the Marr Jag as the ultimate version for live playing, due to its little changes in techni- cal design. But these models also sound different enough to complement each other perfectly. Great guitars, and great taste!
Does anyone else think that the Johnny Marr has a wee bit of Jazzmaster tone? I'm not saying it sounds like a Jazzmaster but it sounds somewhat more mellow in the regular settings (I mean no filters or parallel et cetera). Again, I reiterate as a Jazzmaster player that it doesn't sound exactly like one, however I hear a mellowness which isn't in the av or a Strat et cetera. By the way, both sound good, and I applaud the demo. Cheers.
The Marr one is a bit more dark/mellow. If you see the video of him talking about the guitar, he said It actually has a second bass cut filter because the neck pickup is very dark and sometimes need it. But yeah, I'm a Jazzmaster player too and it doesn't sound like one but it does a slightly more mellow tone you can find in a Jazzmaster
Yeah, the Bare Knuckle pickups he's got in his sig are darker than typical "vintage" spec Jaguar pickups. As you say, the 2nd Hi-Pass filter is because the series position can be too dark. I like what Johnny Marr's done with his signature model. He's one of the few people that has genuinely put a lot of thought into what he wants from a guitar bearing his name, what works and doesn't work for him, yet it's also something that isn't just for playing like him.
It was a pleasure for my contact with you in the Musikmesse 2014. You're feeling playing the guitar is amazing and beautiful, also you tone is fantastic. I like videos you have!! Big hug!! Hansel.
Very comprehensive and tasteful video. Much appreciated. Even listening through my monitors, I was surprised and how fundamentally similar they sounded at times (especially the bridge), though I did prefer the middle and neck positions slightly more in the Marr version. The darker midrange sound of the Marr model seems like it would hold together a bit better for mixing and live situations. The high pass circuit seemed much more pronounced in the '65, though. I take it the '65 has the original bridge? On a wholly unrelated topic: I like that shirt.
They both sound great. The 65 seem overall brighter and hotter output, which I honestly like here in the A/B test. I imagine you could tweak amp settings to get one to sound more like the other, so I guess it's really a tough call.
GREAT review. There's no question the 65' has more sponginess overall in the tone, but I own the Johnny Marr and the pickup switch is by far the most amazing feature. Try switching from the neck to the bridge in the middle of a song right before a chorus hits, because that's precisely what I do with the JM. It's incredibly versatile in that sense. The pickups are wound to be more warm and round compared to the bright 65'. I think they are both amazing guitars and serve different purposes
I went with the Johnny Marr as well, and it was because of the mods as well. The 65 is great, but like you said, the JM kind of addressed the Jag brightness. If you hear it in a range of styles it'll really surprise you.
I’ve played US Jags and the Marr. I loved the sound of them both in isolation. But in this test the 65 has the chiming bell-like Jag thing, the Marr darker, almost muffled.
I would love to see a comparison between the Johnny Marr Jaguar and the new jaguar from the professional series fender is making for 2017 ( if you ever get your hands in one of those ) ;)
I would build my own with a Tele bridge set-up and Dimarzio Area T pickup in the rear and a Area 61 Strat pickup in the front. Then I would hide a PAF in the middle under the pickguard (stealth mode!) and use the top controls strictly for the middle pickup. And I'd put in a Switchcraft Les Paul style toggle on the bottom. Now _that_ would be a guitar to reckon with.
I love 90's. I love distortion, I love Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth, but also love clean tones.... Wich Jaguar do you recommend? ( I prefer Jaguars than Jazzmaster, because of the scale... ) Thank you!!!
***** Either way they have a different tone and I prefer the 65. Does it affect you that I prefer the 65? If I can make the amp sound brighter then I guess I could use either. But either way I pick the 65. So what is the point? Shall I get both because I can just make them interchangeable as you so seemingly state? Because at the end of the day I could take both guitars and plug them into the same amp on the same settings and I can tell you I'm still going to prefer the 65 because it's got a brighter sound. I know what I like and what i don't like. Or should I just have a better reason for you as to why I prefer one Jaguar to the other? What would be an acceptable reason or what would be your reason, tone master, to pick a preference in regards to these two guitars? Please by all means share. It's always nice to get a fresh perspective...
***** I own a Gibson Les Paul. I generally play a Fender Twin Reverb. I actually like the Jags for certain things. Not for all the time. Neck radius is too small to play all the time but I enjoy the comfort and enjoy the sound of them. And for certain songs that have extremely tough chord to fret.
Great tone! Do you mind me asking how much compression you're dialing in on the Diamond? I also play a Marr Jaguar with a Diamond Compressor, though usually through a Deluxe Reverb.
Very good job indeed!!! Well, Johny Marr's model cuts the high frequencies but if you have a band which performs 60s songs you must choose the original one. Additionally these filters that make Jaguar sound more bassie may be good for jazz themes. Finally I would say that Jaguar with it's 610mm scale length could be my travel guitar.
Very hard decision to make. Both are freaking awesome guitars. Johnny Marr series looks like more vintage tone to me and perhaps has a better visual (this green tone is incredible). But this ice blue really changed my mind. It has a wilder tone, more harmonics and more depth.
The main thing I prefer on the JM Jag is the pickup selector switch. The standard Jaguar one is a bit too fiddly for me, especially when playing live. I prefer the sound of the AVRI though. Decisions decisions!
Surprised by how much I preferred the '65 on the compressed and distorted settings. Not sure there's too much between them on the clean and they both worked as unique sounds on the first track, so it's really more about different flavours than one sounding 'better' for me.
Some of the nicest tones i've heard from a Jaguar.. I have the impression that they can be a bit icepick-y. But I don't hear it here at all even though your tone knob is at 10. Do you cut the treble with your amp's EQ?
chinesename Actually I almost never touch the dail on my amp. I do set the tone knob on my compressor to 12.00 while it's around 2.00 when playing my tele. It's not a big change though.
TheMinotaur15 The '65 was pretty noisy, the string seem to buzz a bit behind the bridge. The Marr was great even with 10's. With the short scale of a Jaguar 11's feel a lot like 10's on a strat or tele though.
Evert, I like the sound of the 65. But Johnny Marr is my favorite player. Which guitar would you say sounds better with a bit of overdrive and a lot of reverb?
I suppose it's hard to tell, because apart from the pickups in both guitars maybe being different, it sounds like the blue guitar has higher value pots....
I like the brightness off the 65, but it has some harsh mids. The JM lacks the bright edge, but it also lacks the harsh mids, sounding more balanced overall.

Of the "4 foundational Fenders" the Jaguar was the one I never owned, until now. The re-imagining of the Jaguar, via the Johnny Marr Signature Model, totally changed my mind on these. So much more dynamics & depth, warmth where there was once brittleness. A truly revolutionary design with such versatility for a guitar that once an also ran Fender for me... I just got a used Olympic White one at a steal of a price. But... I had to, because... the neck is a baseball bat & I had to not only have the gloss taken off the back (almost always do that), but also have it reshaped & thinned out a bit. Also, while this is the best vibrato on any Fender offset ever (equal to the Mastery, which I have on my Jazzmaster) the bridge isn't even up to StayTrem level...and regardless, the Mastery Bridge is a must for me (that or the dreaded Gibson tune-o-matic mod). My only other issue is that this is just short of Les Paul level heavy (well a light Les Paul, but still...just part of why I'm an SG & ES or Epiphone Casino guy). My Telecaster was at the edge of how heavy a guitar I was willing to deal with because I loved it so much, but this Jaguar is the new heavy weight champ...and I think mine is on the lighter side. Curious if the Vintage '65 weighs as much as the Johnny Marr signature. I was totally Blessed with getting a Jazzmaster that's built around an authentic, '63 body that's aged into being very light (even slightly lighter than my Stratocaster)- for the record the rest of the Frakenparts Jazzmaster are a custom ebony fretboard neck, Mastery Bridge & Vibrato and Seymour Duncan Antiquity pickups (the I's, not the II's, based on the earlier '58 to '63 Jazzmaster pickups- darker, creamier & beefier, but still all Jazzmaster- the most underrated guitar ever!)
good, except for a part with the JM Jag you showed two seperate "Both pickups in parallel" bits, one was the normal setting you get on jags for parallel pickups that both models have, but the second one you titled "both pickups in parallel JM only", well that's incorrect. The pick ups aren't in parallel when you switch to that 2nd mode, it's a mode where "both pickups are in series" not parallel.
the 65 is brighter, fuller, and more distinct. the high end is really emphasized and bleeds out nicely. not sure if its partly your set up though. i've heard the Marr version sound better. here though it sounds a bit dull.
FINALLY!!!!Someone who knows how to A/B guitars properly!!!Great job

Not sure, the gain are not matched correctly on the amp, the Marr with the BK pickup attack clearly more the amp...
Yes! So many videos just have 30 seconds of random playing. We need quick A / B comparisons no longer than 10 seconds long for each segment.
Nice playing & a good comparison. Both are fantastic. Marr’s Jag is really well rounded on the frequency train. Less treble & harshness. 65 is obviously more “True” to a vintage Jag. I would love to own both but my vote goes to the Marr.

Give me the bridge sound of the Johnny, with the neck sound of the AVRI, and I’m done. Perfec.
So I wanted to hear ‘ both pickups in series’ I know from the video with Johnny Marr that it exists on his Jaguar.
Pickup switching system in the Marr is so much easier for the live player - if you don’t like the sound as much, swap the pickups!
Have you had a chance to try the American Professional jaguars? Any thoughts on how they compare to the Marrguar?
‘65 for me...I feel like it has more of what you want if you want a Jag.

I don't own the 65 AVRI; I just had it for a couple of days to compare it to the Johnny Marr Jaguar.
Two 'similar shades' of sound. Marr edition higher treble style.
Quite ironic that the Marr issue is actually a warmer sounding guitar. Some man for one man.

+saturdayboy4454 I kept and played the hell out of the Johnny Marr one. You can see in a couple of recent videos I uploaded.

Dude, what string gauge are you using? 'Cause a lot of people say anything less then 11's will make the guitar buzz. Btw really liked the vid :-)
TheMinotaur15 At the time of the video, both guitars had 10's. These days I use 11's.
tnx man. did you suffered from any string issues with the 10's?
TheMinotaur15 The '65 was pretty noisy, the string seem to buzz a bit behind the bridge. The Marr was great even with 10's. With the short scale of a Jaguar 11's feel a lot like 10's on a strat or tele though.
tnx for your help mate :)

does it matter that the tone knobs aren't the same? woudnlt that effect the outcome?
I'll take the Johnny Marr Jag thanks!
dude i so much want to buy a sherwood green ... any idea where i could find one ?
sounds pretty equal does weezer use jaguars? silver blue snarls awesomely
good, except for a part with the JM Jag you showed two seperate "Both pickups in parallel" bits, one was the normal setting you get on jags for parallel pickups that both models have, but the second one you titled "both pickups in parallel JM only", well that's incorrect. The pick ups aren't in parallel when you switch to that 2nd mode, it's a mode where "both pickups are in series" not parallel.
65 is brighter and the Johnny Marr one sounds a little darker and fuller. Both sound great though.
I think I'll hang on to my 63 I was thinkin about selling it
Im keeping mine although I might change the radius to9or so as it frets out a little at times
the 65 is brighter, fuller, and more distinct. the high end is really emphasized and bleeds out nicely. not sure if its partly your set up though. i've heard the Marr version sound better. here though it sounds a bit dull.
What amp and efx u used? ty
