The fact that Alec has a Golden Retriever and a Belgian Malinois is such a perfect representation of his personality: goofy, funny, and friendly, while also very intense, hardworking, and enjoys a physical job.
I’ve been a subscriber since the original shop. I love that you’ve gone back to content similar to your origins. This type of content is what made me subscribe and start bladesmithing in the first place!
24 minutes is the length most watched in it's entirety vs 10 that was few years ago now people slowed down and are enjoying things they watch sense COVID before COVID yes we rushed had short attention span but now we are calmer and enjoy longer content and 24 minutes is the sweet number it is like a tv show without commercials
I've thought a lot of what I enjoy as a consumer after the Channel Review video you guys made. And it's fantastic to see Jamie's cinemaphotography development and Alec's comfort and growing as a host. So for me as a consumer, to answer the question posed at the Channel Review episode: I watch this channel to chill out and just watching you guys do your thing, meaning this episode "Katar Dagger part 2" could easily been 3 episodes. I get you don't want to do the same clips over and over. But to watch Alec learn, fail, make jokes, struggle, succeed is the fun. I don't mind watching damascus being made for the hundredth time! There's always something new to learn or fascinating to watch. I guess what I'm trying to say is: what feels like regurgitation and watering out of videos for you, is bliss for us! Because we get more videos to drench our Alec and Jamie thirst!
I'm gonna be honest i understand where you're coming from, Alec's personality is the reason we watch, but it's really a little dull when it's the same thing for 10 videos in a row, there's a reason views fall after a couple of parts when they're in a series. I understand we as viewers who are engaged we want to support them, i'd watch it if it was several parts too, but i much prefer more concise videos
Have you considered doing some kind of armor or a shield in Damascus... Getting it drawn in every direction to make big enough to use would be insanely challenging, not to mention getting it the sheet of Damascus down to 3mm or so. I wonder how many layers you'd have to have the steel so it would show some kind of pattern. Maybe a future project I may try... Great video as usual and I always learn from your content.
I comment unrelated to the video topic, but can I say how appreciative it is to have your first Sponsor plug at the very beginning of the video. It lets us watch till the end without dreading the "Middle Commercial". People might not say anything cause its a small thing, but it does make watching more enjoyable. Keep it up! ALSO Loving the series! Maybe do another 10-15 part build series? Alec Schutzen Channel content? PLEASE YES
really great its now in 4k. do have to say i realised it in the close up of alecs gloves! really adds to the production value and the cinematic experience of these glorious shots!
Can someone with knowledge on the subject explain to me what those flakes that come off during power-hammering are? Is it some sort of slag and if so, what makes it form in an instant?
It is "scale" made of iron oxide (black rust). Heating the iron makes it react to the oxygen in the air much more readily than room temp iron does, so it rapidly forms a thick layer of scale that then gets broken away by the hammer.
Curious for when I'm doing work in the shop- how do you protect your dogs' feet from sharp or hot metal shards while still letting them hang out while you're working?
three things: they’re not there while filming the actual work, he keeps them in a separate area while working, or he lets them roam free…my money is on the former, because he’d be in deep trouble if they’re roaming free without protection while he’s working especially as their hearing would be harmed from the noise
Those shots from your doggos eyes, with that reflection look like how CSI shot are on the back of the vehicle and they say: "Enhance!" and they zoom in on one of screws holding up the number plate "Enhance more!" and suddenly you see the reflection of the killer in the screw. In your case they would put on their sunglasses and say: "I had my eye on him the whole time!"
Something you can try next time you have odd shaped puzzle pieces that you are trying to forge weld without them shearing is to incase the entire piece in mild steel. Essentially turning it into a canister. Doing this you can also reduce the chance of pattern distortion.
I watched a video by tyrell knifeworks recently where he welded sacrificial steel round his weird shapped damascus bits to hold them together during a forge weld.
How many rpm do you run your face mill at? Flinging sparks is not something such a facemill should do. Big dark blue chips flying everywhere, especially onto your skin, is more like what you should see. Your top surface speed should be around 200 m/min if you have carbide inserts of decent quality. Your stepover should be 0,19 mm per tooth as imstructed per manufacturer (i looked up garant seht 1204 inserts for an example). With the mill I use this stepover is a bit heavy, so I tend to go with half that. For calculation you first need to figure out your cutting speed: 200m/min divided by the circumference of your cutter gives you your rpm. Lets use a 80mm face mill: 200m/min ÷ (0,08m×3.14)=796rpm I don't assume your mill has that so let's use 800 rpm. Now for the feedrate: Rpm×amount of inserts×stepover per insert=800×6(imaginative number of inserts on your face mill)×0,1mm=800×6×0,1=480mm/minute Try it, if in doubt feed slower. The rpm should be so that the inserts are happy. They can adapt to the feed rate easily if you use the right cutting speed. Try it please, your inserts will last a lot longer and your wallet will thank you :)
I just saw something I think you should make... A Skatchet. :D It looks like an amazing multitool and I'd love to see your approach to forging and machining one of these beasts.
What is this bit of breathing kit you've got on? Looks like it could be handy for more applications than just your type of shop! (auto painting, woodwork, etc)
Did you ever make any progress with getting the pups used to wearing hearing protection? I hope they're not still exposed to all the loud noise of the workshop.
Prefacing that I am not a blacksmith but real curious :) You can forge veld plates of steal and different steel's together, So why can't you forge veld back together a piece after it cracks?? Referencing to the beginning of video when cracked bits got cut of the Damascus billet. Is it cut of just for convenience or is there a science thing going on??
Yo Alex, I got a question for you. Can you not use some sort of an induction heating to heat your material? I would believe that it would be a better way to heat the product so you don’t waste a bunch of propane or Mapp gas. Whatever it is that you’re using.
8:35 Nomatter if a pattern doesn't turn out exactly the way you planned it can absolutely still be a beautiful product... I buil RC cars from scratch out of aluminum... My builds rarely turn out the way I initially planned. I allways change things and roll with punches... and most times the end up being even cooler for it! Imo symmetry is not beauty... In fact I allways make details to break symmetry and that allways makes things pop in a whole other way...
Just a suggestion, can we get fewer but longer videos. It may be a good thing that at the end of every video I want more idk just sometimes it feels like I barely watched anything. I love you guys and I may be the only one thinking this maybe it’s just not possible with the type of content you make.
@Alec There always seems to be a healthy amount of contingency in your blanks - I'd love to see a vide where you try to minimize the waste as much as possible and see if it changes your processes any. Maybe you could make 2 identical projects weighing bother before and after, and doing one a standard way on one with the idea of wasting as little as possible?
Man i`ve said it and i`m going to say it again: how cool would be if an episode from the SlowMoGuys was filmed in your shop! with all the red steel being smashed at 50,000 fps. 🤩
I would love if y’all would break up some of the montages just to give some more info about what’s going on. Just some reasoning behind why alec changes technique or whatever would be cool. Don’t know much about milling and black smithing so any relevant info would be cool to hear! Love the content, I’ve been watching since the engagement ring video. So cool to watch
Yogo is like I was first, means I get his food. You get all the fancy classes and dog shows. Clearly Pizza is a whole different think, dog was going nuts over it.
Remorseless animal lmao. That was great, poor Jamie was probably being blamed at first hahaha. I'm glad this is going well. It's exciting. I do miss the longer videos too tho. Good luck with the rest bud
Yogo hasn't quite hit true diabolical yet. The family dog while I was growing up would nab the sandwiches my father made to pack for lunch, and my brother was blamed several times before my father caught the dog licking mustard off his muzzle.
I cant tell you how much i missed the blade making.. reminds me of back in the day when i first started following you.

Get ready for a ride boys, it’ll be “Making a Ancient Indian Katar Dagger part 132”
I’m ok with that.
it’s not about the result, it’s about the journey…or so i’m told by UA-cam milkers 😉
I'm hoping that's what this turns into
I'm excited for it
And what’s wrong with that
Hey Alec! You should make a damascus Ngombe Ngulu! One of the Neatest swords out there for sure!
dude, that’s a freaking amazing suggestion and something right up his alley for milking his forging

Have you ever tried to forge a bronze sword before? You could narrate how it's different from working with steel
