What do you think about the Latest UCI ban? 🙅
Read the full article here 👉 gcn.eu/ucibansheadsock
UCI can govern how it pleases. Anyone who isn’t a pro is unaffected. Want to sit in a hyperbaric chamber on O2 before a ride? Go for it. Use steroids until your nads disappear? Why not. Thins the herd. Wear a carbon fibre dalek helmet? Sure. Just book a massage therapy sesh for the following day.
Sport governing bodies are formulaic. They are this way to level a playing field. If it was about the consumer or enthusiast rider, they’d have put a cap on bike cost a long time ago. Or maybe a limit on the number of chain rings per season (CF chain rings aren’t exactly “durable”. Nor are they affordable as a regular use item for the street.
It's actually totally unnecessary. There's already a ban on socks above the knee and all they had to do was enforce it.
Why not have time trials be ridden on standard road bikes? The competition is leveled, the strongest rider wins, and it would cost NOTHING to implement. Time trials only comprise a fraction of all cycling events and I believe having pro riders using equipment most road cyclists have makes their performances more relatable.
I am in favour of the UCI ban. I think anything that makes cyclists look like clowns is bringing the sport into disrepute.
What I ask myself even more: why is it called GCN Tech? With nearly every topic there is a lack of knowledge displayed. It’s frustrating and embarrassing. Even if it’s all “sponsored” these low quality “shows” are not acceptable. I suggest calling it “GCN Fun” or similar. The tech attribute doesn’t fit at all.
Dear GCN Team,
We would like to inform you that for the past 2 years, we have been manufacturing the Setka saddle, weighing 134 grams. We believe it is the lightest saddle with a 3D printed pad.
We also appreciate your brief review of our computer mount LAPKA in one of your previous videos.
Thank you

Re the aero-helmet debate. In the '96 Freestyle Whitewater World Championships held on the Ottawa River in Canada, there were rules in place that scored certain tricks higher and lower than others. Cartwheels were higher than back-surfs, and so on. Flat-spins(360degree rotation on the glassy part of the wave were almost impossible at the time, so they were the highest scoring trick. All the boats at the time were round-hulled(displacement). One maverick, Corran Addison(Riot Kayaks)read the rules, and designed a flat-bottomed kayak(planing hulled)with pinched ends, thereby allowing the boat to flat-spin and cartwheel with ease. The boat was completely within the written rules, yet radically different from every other boat in the competition. After much grousing from athletes from other companies represented at the competition, the day before finals, the governing body changed the scoring for the flat-spin and cartwheels, essentially "leveling the playing field" for the other competitors. Corran famously sat in the eddy holding a sign reading "It's wrong to change the rules the day before the competition" during his three ride's allotted times in protest. Obviously he did not win the World Championship that year, but, his design, the Glide(marketed as "The Boat That Changed The Rules") started what would become a 12 year "arms race" between he and all the other kayak manufactures to come up with the perfect design for every venue. Today, almost 90% of whitewater kayaks have elements of the Glide in their DNA, from extreme Class V boats to river-runners to sub-6ft freestyle boats. Arguably, changing the rules that day in '96 altered the whitewater kayak industry forever. I think the UCI should think about the unintended consequences of "banning" anything. with the knowledge that someone somewhere is going to push the boundaries of any new rules written in the search for more and more performance. Thanks for reading, as always, love the show!
Week 53 of asking for a “The UCI has no jurisdiction here” T-shirt
That’s a year and a week !
It would be funny AF, also pretty based 😎
Just make one
@@simonsepicthey can’t get a new GCN bottle printed, not too hopeful for the shirt.
Cant make new content either. Sponsors wont allow it 😂😂😂
I see Alex has a T-shirt with riders sporting the new Bell "End" helmet design. Chapeau to Bell!
Talking of helmets. That t-shirt Alex is wearing? 😄
😅
Should be banned?
Hahahaha 🤣😂
Human Centipede vives. 🫣
Great show Manon & Albert. Love the idea that the Olympics should have 1 sponsor and all riders on same bike. TONS of advertising for whatever bike sponsor steps up and "levels" the playing field.
Would be great in principle but the olympics wouldn’t allow the advertising. 🤷♂️
The banning of the Specialized head-sock after it had been in-use for well over a year is ridiculous and definitely makes the UCI seem reactionary at best. I completely agree that with the exception of imminent safety issues, equipment rules should not be changed mid-season. It is understandable that the UCI may want to institute a different direction for a given technology/topic, however, teams must be able to plan for and make equipment choices for an upcoming season without having to worry if the rules will spontaneously change midseason.
Great point! Teams need to feel secure in their choices, Do you think the Jumbo helmet will be banned soon?
How long were Spinacci bars in use before they were banned? They got form on this.

Cool to see a shout to low-rider bikes, popular for decades among California kids emulating their elders in Impalas and all those colorful chrome-laden classics. And those bikes were based on the 20" Schwinn Sting-Ray frame and banana seat. And I loved my Sting-Ray from '67 to '75--well, everything except for the fenders. And I still remember excitedly removing them so it'd be lighter and faster, sort of the opposite of the later low-rider trend but as an eight-year-old in San Francisco, I was serious about speed and another kid helped me take them off. 😀
and now in san francisco we’re all on carbon fiber roadies and single speeds with “patina”
At least you can change stem of the Giant TCR without de-assembling the whole bike.
I think the visma giro helmet actually looks cool :X
Comment of the year.
Manon "I love a chuncky boy"...
When it comes to equipment like helmets, as long as it is not dangerous it should be allowed
They designed the helmet from the picture on Alex's t shirt
hahaha
Alex, you made a great point, after Manon brought up having everyone having the same equipment. I really think the Olympics should be the place where the bar is set. Too many rich countries put engineer the up and coming nations.
By the way, these helmets are fairings. If they are not allowed on bikes or on clothes why are they allowed on one’s head?
Do you think it should be different rules for the Olympics and normal road racing?
I guess the issue is who supplies the 400 or so bikes for the mens and women's RR and TT.
@@jakobjas4212 and track events
Pls. Wealth is also part of an athlete’s toolbox of abilities too. So you would limit an athlete, simply because their competitors can’t “out-money” them? How is that fair to the competitor? “I’m sorry, you can’t use your bike because Tom back there can’t afford it” that’s ridiculously unfair.
By that vein, if we limit access to wealth, let’s also then limit the competitor’s access to training and fitness. That sound silly fair; if no one can buy an advantage, then no one should be able to train for an advantage either.
I completely agree with the point about fairings. The only reason these helmets are allowed is that when the UCI banned fairings on the bike, they didn't think about fairings on the rider, and this created a loophole. The front and side bulges could be considered either "fairings," or "nonessential" (like the head sock), but the real problem is that UCI's rule book has been cobbled together without clear focus. Too many of the rules are about banning what they didn't want at some particular time, rather than about creating or preserving or even clarifying what they do want.
Folding bikes been made by Ritchey for a while now. Folding bikes have a role, especially if you travel a lot.
And if you fold them enough they can also DO a roll
The UCI should have a submission window once a year… all new tech is only accepted for review during this period… it then goes to review and is approved or rejected and then made available to use for the next season… no mid season releases, no pulling tech 3 races in or hour before a race (Ekoi pedals).
That's a really good idea! 💡
That 100t chainring is perfect for Hank to use to set an hour record on a Brompton!
what's really cool about the strider in BV is the bent valve stems. my kinds strider sucked to get a pump on the valve stem.
The helmet seems to be a fairing. I thought the UCI already had rules that ban fairings.
Looks like Visma found a loophole 👀
I cannot see how those helmets would do what it is supposed to in a crash, the shape has to be unfortunate in regards to rotational forces when you hit the deck.
They would have had to pass stringent safety test, We would imagine that the front section is hollow? 🤔
Agree with @makeitwithmurm 100% . I wonder how the Giro helmet would handle a crash like Stephan Kung's. I would think MIPS could only do so much to mitigate rotational forces caused by a 7-9 inch protrusion from the front of the head. Are Rotational Forces even part of the standards for the safety test?
@@gcntech Best not to assume things.
the helmets had to be rigorously tested for safety following the current uci guidelines or else they wouldn’t have been approved in the first place. you can’t just randomly introduce a new piece of equipment unless it has been proven safe
@@ryanclose1 yes, there is a reason the peaks on mtb helmets are designede to break off
Who were the GCN presenters calling for an immediate ban on the Giro helmet, Si, Dan, Ollie? Are Alex and Manon saying we should not pay attention to them?
I do agree that UCI should take a look at these helmets. At some point they are more a fairing/aero device than they are a helmet for safety. I do however don't agree with how the UCI has handled the situation coming in with the ban after the fact.
Recently met a pilot who travels with a heavily-modded titanium Brompton fitted with drop bars and as many carbon/ti parts as possible so that he can go on group rides wherever he lands! Incredibly niche, but for a cyclist who travels a lot for work (or AS work!) a folding road bike makes a lot of sense.
Giro helmet looked crazy at first.
But, 1 it actually stays on the head, 2 the vizor actually permits looking forward while tucked. 3 compared to Roglicz no vizor loosing yellow, it’s way more stylish. 4 it looks proper next level aerodynamic !
For those interested on bikes that break down for transport, look up Rinko. Very neat modifications that allow a bike to be disassembled in less than 15 minutes, slipped in a bag, and carried on to a train, as a large 'package.'
I think they should make the new helmet bigger, so it covers the whole bike. The shape is ideal for that and UCI doesn't have any bans on the size of helmets 😁
I am trying to remember when I have heard something as ridiculous as UCI shouldn't be allowed to change the rules or their interpretation during the season. Pretty sure that I heard it on some GCN channel, though.
Just ask Graeme Obree about random UCI rule changes ;-)
Graeme was a visionary! What do you think he would make of this helmet?
Aye, the front of his saddle wasn't far enough behind the bottom bracket so he cut some off his saddle to make fall within the rules........and that wasn't allowed either. I think he ended up using the saddle off a kids bike and that was allowed - reluctantly.
If it was faster he would love it !@@gcntech
“Where’s the bell?” Looks like there’s a few on Alex’s T shirt
Can the UCI ban the aero helmet on Adams GCN t-shirt?
😂😂
Match Sprints on Low Riders with dingoballs at the velodrome.
@10:50... I hate when that happens 😂 It was a good question, btw
12:05 it’s ok to acknowledge that other UA-cam channels exist. We all watch “cycling UA-cam” so give their content a shout.
I agree with Manon. Everyone should have same equipment and the best person wins. Also, her hair looks amazing!
Great way to kill pro cycling with only a handful of manufacturers and therefore sponsors though
Being rich and having access to tech/money is an ability too. You would negate the advantage of wealth, but not the advantage of a superior physique?
If we enforce equal equipment, then it’s only fair that we enforce equal fitness as well; e.g. no one is allowed to ride beyond a certain w/kg in the race, for more than a set amount of time.
I think the aerohead 2 is great for people with prescription glasses. Fits right over, awesome🤣
The headsock works by smoothening internal airflow over hair and ears back to the rectangular "exhaust" of the helmet. Probably a bankrobbers beanie would work quite well too. As long its not attached to the helmet, its legal.
I have a new dream job. Work for the UCI, writing statements about crazy new cycling tech. Seems so exciting! Mondays be like: "Let's see I have in my inbox this week."
Yeah that "warning" is perplexing. As Tom Pidcock said about Tadej's 81 km solo... wtf 😂
You should talk to the riders about the helmets. I did, and a TT champion told me that the visibility is so much better. That is good for safety. So UCI can ban it, but if something like with Stefan Kung on the euros happens again they are to blame. Also: it looks strange, but when the results are there the critics will be silenced.
From this incident, it's clear that UCI wields immense power. Their explanations often seem ambiguous or forceful, leading to speculation about possible behind-the-scenes dealings or profit motives. The FIFA bribery scandal of 2015 is still fresh in memory, underscoring the need for transparency and accountability.
13:10 i really like it and while we are at it might aswell also put some tt bars to it oh and maybe this bike could benefit from that 100t chainring. 😛
The giro helmet looks good when the riders are in the TT position
I just checked that the tire pressure I naturally gravitated towards is actually the correct one for me!
The use of cleats is not necessary either.. why they dont ban it ?
I have one of those Specialized “Mirror” saddles with titanium rails and I’m almost ashamed to admit that I love it since I’m a leather saddle snob (I have always ridden Brooks or Berthaud saddles). My only issue with them is that they are prone to creaking - Specialized warrantied one of them for me and the second one is fine. Before someone correctly points out that leather saddles creak, that’s fixable as you can fix the issue with leather conditioner.
I am a year-round cyclist and I ride in terrible weather and you definitely get mud and bits in the weave but, as Alex points out, it’s not hard to clean by spraying the saddle.
At 5:53: Alex, how about if the TT world championships were on unbranded, identical TT bikes. No weight limit because, of course, the larger riders would require larger frames. Suppliers could be selected by lottery, as not every frame, wheel, or component manufacturer would want to supply their product in an unbranded form. The problem with the Olympics is that it's only every four years. Great discussion!
If they say non essential parts then they should ban integrated visors because those aren’t essential but help aero
So you are saying a visor does not provide protection?
Someone add up all the times GCN announcers previously said "ban the Giro helmet!" . If you watch the past GCN episodes and then this one you'll get very disoriented.
The New Giant TCR looks very much like the last generation Bianchi Specialissima. That’s no bad thing 👍
Gotta say that the winner for coolest looking yet least functional trend for me is the integrated cockpit/handlebars. You're then left with a bike where the ONLY thing you can adjust in term of fit is the saddle. Why?
Integrated bars can be adjusted for height, and I order the integrated bar with the ideal bar width and stem length before it’s installed.
Teams should also be proactive and submit their equipment before the season starts. I blame both 6:20 , manufacturers and the UCI as there seems to be no communication between them.
Interesting point! Do you think the UCI should be involved in the planned process of pro level kit?
Frankly, I'm surprised that it isn't. If companies are allowed to launch new products in the middle of a season, why is the UCI not allowed to ban in the middle of the season?
They have too! And UCI has checked them and APPROVED those helmets before the end of 2023. Only after public pressure makes them release those (IMHO stupid ) statements.
Alex over Manon's crap " thanks. Bye. Love you."😂
Here’s a compromise for Manon: the UCI should not be able to change the rules mid season unless Manon is pleasantly surprised. Problem solved 😁
Best bike channels out there.
Aero aero aero. As a track rider I’m acutely aware that wheels, frames, bars, helmets, skinsuits, socks indeed every component is being optimised for aero advantage and has been for years. For the UCI to now ban a helmet that has been ridden for a year or one they have sanctioned which fills the air pocket behind the aerobars and makes the bike and rider “system” into more of a bullet, is basically closing the stable door after the horse has bolted.
We either embrace all aero advantages or none.
All those who said the GIRO helmet looked ugly are the same ones getting angry that they might ban it?
"Watts in this booty?" If there was a Muc-Off logo at the end, people would be flipping tables.
The adult and logical thinker would realize its supposed to be a punny joke and that you need power in your "booty" to get that bike going like a bullet.
Alex does the chef's kiss like he's smoking a joint 🤪
How about have ‘showcase races’ for manufacturers to demo new gear after the grand tours are completed each season? It may invite some increased interest in late-season races, and it would give the UCI the winter break to consider whether to allow newly developed gear for the following season?
My own experience with the $450 specialized mirror saddle was that it was a revolutionary game changer. I held off for over a year before shelling out the astronomical price, but now that I've ridden it for 6+ months, I'm thinking about which of my other bikes I'm willing to add another mirror saddle. I won't be putting it on bikes that I ride
Japanese Keirin equipment has to be appoved by NRJ, so basically they are riding on the same gear.
No offense Alex, but going forward, please just leave the chef's kiss to Manon. 😂
The way Formula 1 handles rule changes would probably work better. Plenty of notice for rule changes unless they're for safety or a clarification on an existing rule
I can't wait to see what they come up with next year! A helmet with motorized propellers!😂
If you can't ban thing during the season, how do you enforce the rules? Manufacturers put out equipment any time of the season....
i had forgotten about the phallus shirt...
Is a balaclava banned ? I don't see the difference in the Head sock and a Balaclava.
why no video review of the TCR? Previously Si would have been first out there with a classy submission 😜
Does Alex realise that his tee-shirt looks like the cyclists are doing a 2-wheel human centipede?
i think the uci just needs to get rid of all of the non safety rules. lets see what fast cycling really is, I want my lotus bikes back
ALL rules? It would likely lead to recumbents being used for certain flatter stages and especially TT. Which would be awesome in my opinion.
Manon is cuter than Ollie, but his bike vault comments are always pure gold
I think it would be hilarious if after banning the headsock, the rest of the peloton shows up with the Giro 🤣
I hope the ban doesn't mean giro won't sell that helmet. I want it, will buy it as soon as it comes out
As an art piece? Or to actually wear it in public.
@@jakobjas4212 I want to paint a shark head on it lol
When manufacturer's claim a 2 W savings at xx speed, GCN ought to test the new and old bike with and without a rider in a wind tunnel. If it's only true without a rider, then the claim is useless.
3:30 sounds a lot like the ATF’s antics
Giro helmet looks better then the Poc Tempor
If the UCI think that some helmets are getting too outrageous, then do something, clearly and timely. This reaction about another issue apparently based on the Giro helmet, is utter nonsense. That said, I have my doubts about the safety of the Giro helmet in case of certain crashes, putting a lot of strain on neck, for instance. Did they really test these things?
12:55 yeah definelty could be faster. i think fishscales shape is used in some aerodynamic stuff.
Balaclavas should totally be allowed. massive aero dynamaic helmets that arent normal for riders should be whats banned. thats wacky
I agree with Manon. People always look for unfair advantages.
I'd sooner the UCI ban hookless. Far greater (safety) implications in the wider cycling world than a few pros wearing freaky helmets.
You're not the only one that isn't a tubeless fan. We're all for new tech and when done correctly hookless should be safe 🙌
I love that Alex wore his condom shirt for this episode
Alex trying to steal Ollie's thing. SMH 😅
The Specialized head sock is quite clearly not compliant.
Sort of similar to F1. Mercedes and the adjustable toe angle steering. Innovation pushes the boundaries of thinking. Keep it legal for that season then change. Mid game is just not right.
Don't worry, you can always sell them to triathletes
😂😂
The'll wear anything 👀
O that's funny, they are probably green with envy. 😀
i have a couple of 571 aluminium tt frames that i bought for about 20 euro each. i did not care much about their history, but recently, we were discussing them with friends. turns out, the frames were made for a cycling team just before the uci ban of the 571 wheels, so they did not even care to paint the frames anymore. the batch was around 20-40 pieces in three different sizes. i guess the project did cost quite a lot of money. it was their loss.
They have become more fairing than helmet.
UCI should just institute dimension limits/parameters, problem solved.
So which brand would make the bikes and all other equipment if everyone had to use the same equipment? Ever thought of that?
If you could turn 100 rpm with a 100/13 setup, you'd be ~60mph/100kph!
It's a fairing that is masquerading as a helmet. They would never allow it if it was attached to the bike but if it's on the rider it's suddenly OK? WTF???
The UCI could, if they had any intestinal fortitude, ban it easily. reason being that they never thought anyone would do this.
The rules makers always have that option, it's just buried in the regulations.
That's the case for all TT helmets though, otherwise it would just be a normal helmet.
It'll be interesting to see what their next move it 👀Watch this space! We'll be sure to report on it !
UCI should simply ban all TT helmets. Riders will use their standard road helmets for TT races.
Could that mean that standard helmets could get really wild? 😵💫
@@gcntech I do not think so because they will have to be anyway light enough and confortable enough to be worn in any road bike race. Just like the Abus Gamechanger or the Specialized Evade. TT hemets have such an impact on aero perfomance that is more likely to see winning not the strongest rider but the one with the biggest aero advantage. The Visma helmet gives to much aero advantage to the rider who wear it.
Thanks for the correction about Enve being hookless... now I can go back to hating them 😂 But seriously, there is something sinister about wheel companies who went all-in on hookless. They know damn well tire retention is compromised. They chose bigger profits over rider safety.
What it comes to equipment, look at swimming and the battle over the tech suits that lasted ~10 years. In the end, a swimmer with a tech suit had a huge advantage over someone without one. Even when FINA finally decided to ban them, they provided advanced notice.
Should cycling be taking notice of other sports more?
@11:26 went under the radar 😁
