Me too I mean there should be a class action suite against Giant for making a breaking bike that kills sliding seat posts and possibly causes health issues from the failed ISP angle making the seat rub against the thigh. Twice as bad for us thick thighed riders. And who wants a butt bruiser? Not a bike and company for me. QC bah the issues are laughable and damage issues life threatening. Sprinting heavy rider sitting breaking the seatpost is a recipe to a fall under a bus. It is worse than incompetent it is criminal negligence at least. And for the price of the bike unbelievable. Thank you Peaktorque for the honest review, a lot has to change before I buy a Giant. Now that company is in the never category. 😢

Bought a Giant/Liv Avail AR for my mum a few years back. I expected the D-shaped seat post to be an amazing solution to the problem of getting the saddle straight. Then I realised that the seat post would do what the saddle clamp on your TCR does when I tighten the clamp. My mum never noticed. But I can’t look at the bike anymore without noticing and feeling the urge to do something about it.😨

Hey Peak Torque, thanks for this. Love my TCR Adv Pro, fits 32mm for gravel no problem. Question: how did you get the 11s di2 to work with the fsa alloy bars? Did you drill a hole for the junction box?

The TCR Adv Pro sliding seat post torque is 6nm. Mine started to creak, so I slipped a shim of tin sheeting, and problem solved.

Rode a 2016 TCR SL for 6 years and thats enough for me. Had the off centre saddle issue, seatpost clamp ate away at the height markings (luckily it was just the paint and not the carbon). Finally BB was out of shape, I could push in the pressfit BB with my hands with little to no resistance.

  • @Dolmar-Rick

Must say I've not had any problems with my 2017 tcr adv sl. Well, i did fit the shim steel on mine after you did a video on it, but it wasn't as wobbly as yours, which would be the same as the green frame. Think it has rubbed the paint at the bottom bit of clamp before that a tad, but hasn't damaged the carbon. the top cut is fine on mine as well. I ran a big flat file over it to get it pretty flat. My seat is perfectly straight compared to the blue frame, though. was checked with lazer. Have you checked the seat clamp part as the alu does wear it did on my older one. You're probably a lot harder on it with your size/ weight and immense watts😉. I'd go for a specialized they seem to be regarded as being made with pixie dust for some reason, with the failing steerer tubes and exploding wheels and marketing bollocks making out it's an aero frame 😂

I have the TCR Advanced Pro 0 2021 model. I think that this particular version was probably the best TCR out of all the TCRs of that generation. I didn't like the fixed seat post of the SL version to start with as it offered no flexibility in height adjustment. The new TCR 2024/5 is over £1000 more than what I paid for mine. Mine Orbea Terra has a similar seatpost wedge design which already destroyed one seatpost and overall the seatpost tends to slide down sometimes despite tightening to correct torque(8 nm!). But I see that not only Orbea does it. Why just not use a traditional seatpost clamp, at least on gravel bikes. So many problems caused by these modern seatpost wedges.

Have the 2023 TCR SL Team colour frameset and I have to say the ISP has been perfect for the 3 months of use its had so far. I was expecting the ISP clamp to have play and issues but mine slides on like a glove and hasn't shown any signs of damaging the top of the carbon where they interface. I'm a bit of a lump in cycling terms at 83kg as well so I think I have just been lucky so far. I will check the saddle alignment as I feel like one side is perhaps sticking out but i'll get a laser on it.

  • @taosanwu

The seat clamp on the older tear-drop shaped ISP isn't ideal, but the newer flat back of the truncated-aerofoil or D-shaped mast on the latest Giant SL models does interface better with the clamp, and requires much less torq on the clamping bolt. I do always put a full round of protect film on my '23 Propel's seat mast when I cut it down for the last six times, and neither the paint nor the film have any apparent mark, quite a big contrary to all the scars on the seat mast of my late '17 Propel (may it RIP).

On my 2021 TCR (not an SL) with OD2 steerer there is also what I consider a design problem.
1 - The steer tube expander is built in an hourglass shape - so that it is only pushing out on the steer tube at the exact spot where the stem is clamping. If you assume the expander has full straight walls like is normal, you still won't notice this one is different until you take it out of the steer tube and take it apart. That plug can only be positioned at the top of the steer tube so this means you should NEVER EVER lower the stem itself - you must cut the steer tube however much you want to lower it. (Or, replace the expander plug.
2 - The internal clamping surface of the stems (the Contact SL aluminum ones) is too small AND the corners that move inward while you are clamping the stem to the steer tube have edges that are too sharp (exact 90 degree angle corners). These cause those corners of the stem to dig into and deform the steer tube! That happened on mine. I was able to cut off enough steer tube to get to the undamaged part and flipping the stem upward from there was right for my position. To fix this you need to perhaps file the corner of the stem to be a bit more rounded, or use a different stem entirely. But if you use a different stem with a bigger clamping area then you might also need to replace the expander plug. Mine originally got damage when I had been raising and lowering the stem without knowing about #1 above. But I still worry that the same problem is happening (because of problem 2). If I buy a new fork it's definitely going to be the normal OD1 (1 1/8? outer diameter) size.
Other than these issues I love the bike and I'm still happy I bought it (at a good discounted price)

    Thanks for the review.
I also had issues with the TCR advanced pro (rim frameset like yours) & went through 3 seatposts £150 each time 😮. I kind of figured out what was going on in the end and got the dremel out and put a nice little chamfer on the top of the wedge like you mentioned. Crazy how they left it like that - knife edge digging into the post .
My Mrs now has the version of TCR you have but the advanced pro not ISP. I’ve not checked the wedge but it’s nice to hear they changed the wedge & chamfered- I did notice it’s 5nm not 7 .
I hope Giant UK loan you the latest to review .

The ISP hassle would be terrible enough. That alone would be a no-go, but the fact that the seatpost wears out over time is unacceptable. But the seat misalignment is even worse.
The clamping problem of the Giant frame without ISP is unfortunately a classic problem with aero seatposts. Most aero seatposts clamp like shit! I destroyed a post on my Rim-S5, which was probably also undersized. The small locking screw of the clamping wedge had come loose and the post tended to slip. Whether it was because of this or because of the extreme bump, I destroyed the post in a hard bump in the half-shadow with my slack 64 kg. Also at the front. The new post without offset took over half a year in Corona times, that's how long I had to ride with the setback post. Funnily enough, the new seatpost clamps quite well at 5 nm, while the old one was still slipping at 6-7 nm.
But here's the thing: my slightly older Cervelo P2 has a slightly wider seatpost with a steeper angle and the frame has more contact surface. The seat post has never (!) slipped. Even 2 nm is enough clamping force there. To come back to the topic: too bad. I actually wanted to recommend Giant to my brother. But the post seems to be terrible. I already recommended a bike with a round seat post to him anyway. They just work and you can also get aftermarket stuff.

I've got the 2021 TCR (non-ISP) and I've had the same problems. The original clamp put too much pressure on the seat post and deformed the carbon. I've had 2 or 3 seat posts from Giant, and it was only truly fixed with the new clamp. Giant never told me about the new design... I only found out about the new clamp on WW. Interestingly, I never had an issue with them replacing the seat post through the warranty process. Albeit, it took a long time for them to deliver new ones!
I also have the same issue with the saddle not pointing straight. I haven't tested it with a laser, but I'm confident my eyes don't deceive me. I think my only other grievance is them reducing the thickness of the paint, seems like the most pointless thing. Aside from that I've been really happy with the bike.

Absolutely agree @PeakTorque. ! Great bike but seat clamps on both are just let’s say questionable…. I own TCR advanced pro 2021. Warranted my frame because it cracked inside , where the seat clap wedge goes in. My wedge had 7Nm sign on it…. New seat clamp wedge has a 4.5-5.5Nm. So they redesigned that clamp, made it longer and they lowered torque on it too. There was so many complaints from users about creaking seatpost so they redesigned that seat clamp. So guys if you own 2021 TCR , check your frames , I had no idea where that creaking is coming from until one day my seatpost slipped downed about 1 inch , that day frame cracked…. My frame was replaced for a 2022 TCR . but for some reason Giant Czech Republic /Slovakia are sent me new frame with that new redesigned seat clamp butwith old scratched seatpost which like @PeakTorque mentioned in this video pealed off, the numbers scale on it is barely readable. And also if that peeled off that seatpost is a bit smaller which will make the gap between seatpost and frame bit bigger than it should be= more creaking again ??? Still didn’t get my frame back so cannot tell how will that work. Otherwise great bike , but that is just bad from Giant….

I had another Giant bike with that wedge seat-post-clamp. Absolutely horrible. It was either (1) creaking or (2) slipping or (3) biting into the seatpost (carbon D-Fuse). So yeah... I wasn't happy when it got stolen, but I also wasn'T that sad. Otherwise a great bike, rode it to work two years, but that seat-post-clamp ruined it and the creaking drove me mad.

Love my TCR advanced have last year's model and it's the best road bike I've had. Will never buy a bike with a daft seat post again after the emonda I previously had don't know why it's so hard for manufacturers to not make stupid designs that no one wants! My pal has just bought a New TCR advanced so be interesting to see the ride difference as that's just arrived in the shop. The only thing I'll slag giant off for though is I think the paint quality is rubbish compared to other brands and it's across all their bikes ranges MTB and road.

  • @onmydeskihaveacup
    @onmydeskihaveacup 3 місяці тому

The best way to make the seat post last is to only tighten hand tight with a short allen key, and do this ritualistically before each ride. The posts eventually collapse, which I am guessing just due to carbon shearing under creep, delamination, and UK crap roads. These posts are a tight fit so i don’t buy the filing the edges malarkey. This can concentrate the pressure more, and obvs this will void any further warranty. Use carbon paste.

Honda and Kawasaki's new 4 cylinder, 300kph, Japan manufactured, IOM TT ready, super sports motorcycles will be hitting the shops at £10.5k... Giant has had issues with the Revolt gravel bike seat post as well. That wedge and shim used when you use a 27.2 seat post is never been right for me. My 2022 model year had to have a warranty frame replacement due to cracks on the seat tube. Got the replacement and went straight away to 30.9 seat post and did away with the shim. Really disappointing. Top that with the replacement frame is a 'color matched' version meaning that it was not painted on the regular production line. Paint quality is absolute crap and within 4 months I have a done of paint chips. Yes I know it is a gravel bike but my former gravel bike, a Specialized Diverge, looked as good as new after 3 years of use. As I said, I love the ride of the Revolt but just let down by some of the details.
