That's a good question and there are several possible answers. Most likely because Miyazaki was too busy with other things or he just wasn't interested in making a sequel. Another possibility, (having read the manga, myself) I can tell you that the animated movie was a bit more rushed in terms of story and thus has a few plot holes. The manga took its time to flesh out the story, so the writing was stronger. Example: The story of the God Warrior helps get the plot moving, from the very beginning, in both versions, but the creature didn't make an official appearance until far later in the manga. Miyazaki had to wrap up that storyline more quickly in the movie because he didn't want to leave loose ends hanging. This is why the God Warrior just appears at the very end of the film and instantly dies. Whereas in the manga, the God Warrior was at full strength when it finally appeared. Miyazaki wrote/drew the manga until 1994 so when the movie came out in 1984 he was still making the story up as he went along and he probably didn't expect to write it for as long as he did. Next year, 2022, will mark the manga's 40th Anniversary and I plan on doing a comparison video on how different the manga and the movie are. There have been rumors recently about the possibility of a Nausicaa remake with Hideaki Anno as director. But nothing has been confirmed and most likely will not be. We all know that Miyazaki is very protective of his rights but I think if he were ever to approve of a remake, Anno would be the only director he would choose to take the helm.
About your "problem" with too much music: In alot of old ghibli movies (although nausiacaä was made before ghibli was founded) additional music was added for the american and french version. I don't know if nausiacaä is one of them because I dont live in a country where that happened, but it would explain your nitpick.
For example: After the Torumekian ships are destroyed by Asbel's air strike, Nausicaa, Kushana, and Mito escape with the gun ship and head beneath the clouds to rescue the cargo barge. As they descend blow the clouds action music begins to play. They are supposed to be in the part of the jungle where the toxic is thickest. Even Mito says that he has "never seen the poison this dense before". To me, that action music didn't seem to fit the seriousness of the situation. If they are heading down into a part of the jungle that is that threatening, I think the music should have been a bit more somber (or maybe just have silence while the wind blows) to give the setting a more ominous impression. I have seen both the Japanese and English versions of the movie, as well as "Warriors of the Wind" which was their first attempt to bring "Nausicaa" to the US back in 1985. All three versions that I have seen have had that same music.
Needless to say Arrietty is one of the best Studio Ghibli movies out there but I'd like to advise people to watch the original Japanese instead of English dubbed ones bcuz apart from missing out on the film score here and there you'd be missing out a lot of good meaningful dialogues which makes more sense in Japanese than in any other dubbed versions. If I'm not mistaken this mismatching of dialogues and omitting of the scores happened with Nausicaä, Laputa Castle in the Sky and Princess Mononoke. Even Hayao Miyazaki himself had addressed the situation saying that he'd want his movies and all of Ghibli films to have zero edits and cuts when shown outside of Japan.
