I agree with you that people over complicate simple movements

Excellent points. It isn't just Wing Chun, you could say the same thing about a lot of folks in most, maybe all, traditional martial arts. Holding to the principles of your art is all fine and dandy, but adapting it to your situation, making it work, has to remain the primary principle.

I love it when Boxers give a no Bullshit approach to this stuff. The WC community "mostly" likes to over emphasize on simple things.

Actually, watch him more. He isn't mocking it. He is sort of like you - he throws out the statements that will clearly draw criticism, only to prove his point. I mean, he can't be mocking Bong Sau if he is talking about how it worked. He is, like you, mocking all those keyboard warriors who think they know everything. (Been watching him for a while.)

Wing Chun is a conceptual style or philosophy of combat designed to strike your opponent in the most efficient way possible while minimizing effort AND as quickly as possible.
That means that every shot must do its job & then be prepared to do whatever else it has to do whether that's attack or defense.
For some reason, a lot of people believe that just because the punch is thrust out, it's supposed to stay out. In reality, it's designed to be something like a combination of a cross & a jab. It thrusts out, delivers the impact, & returns twice as fast as it was delivered. The power comes from forward body movement, a springy action from the spine, hip torque, forward shoulder movement, forward elbow movement, wrist flexion, fist alignment, & relaxation.
In Louisville & back in the 80's, I studied with Henry Cook who was a legend in the west end. He had the most powerful punch I have ever felt. Through a 4" phone book I felt my lungs collapse & could feel the punch in my spine. I have no doubt that if he were to hit someone for real with the intent to kill them with a single punch, he could have. I'm not the only one who has experienced the power of Henry Cooke's punch. Many can testify to his incredible power. Remember those Kung Fu movies where you see a guy get hit & he spits out blood? That was Cooke & it's for real.

3:53 I agree.. on all that. I like his show too. I stop by every day just about. My BONG SAO in my JKD is a hit.. I use a forward BONG meaning my shoulder to elbow is facing forwards. My hand is in a WING towards his eyes. One simple turn of the wrist, I’ve got my fingers in the eye like a spike. I’ll slip underneath of it with a BUI GEE CHEUNG CHOY combo. Great work on this one that was fun. But interesting enough. That’s the JKD take on it case you were curious

I'm curious about your observation of and interaction with the Buddha Hand Wing Chun, (now deceased) Grandmaster Henry Leung's system.
My teacher Khallid Hakim was a student of Henry's. His power was terrifying. I was on the receiving end of his elbows, fists, and fingertip strikes for the time I studied with him. He could rattle a serious vibrating power into his fingertips. It would cause bleeding welts.
James Cama, of Brooklyn (now deceased) was Grandmaster Henry Leung's top student. He also did Kwang Sai Juk Lum, the Temple style of Southern Mantis.
I know one of Sifu Cama's students teaches there in Chicago.
I really like the material you present Sifu Izzo. Thank you for your perceptive analysis of our style, Wing Chun. Thank you for analyzing content, regardless of what branch of Wing Chun it originates from.
Another teacher I studied with, Gilbert Peña, did Wing Chun from Shanghai, through a Master in Houston's Chinatown, Peng Ho. Gilbert had met Sifu Leung Ting (his wife Kim Peña studied with Sifu Emin Boztepe before he left Sifu Ting's organization) and Sifu Leung Ting told Gilbert that there were highly skilled Wing Chun practioners in Shanghai.
You know and understand that Poon Sao, Chi Sao, "rolling hands" can and sometimes does escalate into a "real fight".

you train to be at ease with those ackward movements... so they come naturally and you know how to get out of it...
because bongsao can be a deadly trap for yourself if your opponent jsut follow your movement and grab your harm into an armlock...
when not train to use it... it can turn into that way example his bong sao if in a context where his opponent grab and wrestle then we could say his technic is a little compromised and could leave himself a little too much open to an armlock... but that mattter only against someone who is a wrestler.
Training is to make yourself at ease with diverse movement to make those when needed naturally.

Archie Moore was using bong sau.....in the 1940's -60's...bong sau is a Chinese word..in english is just wing block , forearm block or crossarm gaurd. Wing Chun is not a system as people claim it to be ..its a series of applications to use for combat situations. Yim Wing Chun, which its named after was a martial artist in her own right before she learned it from Ng Mui. The idea that a woman could beat a skilled male martial artist who wanted to force her into marriage after one year of training without any other martial arts training her repertoire is just folklore, and absurd. I was a boxer at the age of 16, ....I became a better boxer after i learned wing chun...becasue I had an understanding of how to use the hand movements in close..but wing chun alone would not have made me a good fighter against another skilled fighter

No he didn't. It was a deflecting movement similar to Bong Sau arm position. There is no need for Bong Sau against an extended elbow high punch like a jab since a jab doesn't have any downward pressing force, a simple straight arm punch to the nose will do fine against it. in Wing Chun the Bong Sau forms on it's own against low elbow punches to the chest or below.

WC was developed by a women for small weak people to defeat a larger stronger attacker. Therefore a 5yr ol girl could easily defeat Mike Tyson in his prime if her internal WC is on point.

Seems like most all martial arts like to boast that it's designed for underdog to defeat Goliath especially from Asia being they aren't really known for being big. That being said I am 5f5 122 pounds and train jkd on Mondays and wing chun on Fridays lol But seriously though all the wing Chun greatest seem like they're also boasting a background in boxing or wrestling like wong shun leung (Bruce Lee trained more with than ip man as is traditional of senior students) Bruce Lee (high school boxing champ) Erik Paulson ....Izzo

Well you can’t do that cause now it’s not real wing Chun, 9r no that’s not aikido, it’s wrestling. It’s all bs

I've been trying to tell people for about 4 years now, A. boxing & Wing Chun are more similar than you think which includes the bong sau. Boxing has a forearm deflection that looks very similar to a bong sau. B. bong sau is not trained right & quite frankly, neither is most Wing Chun including some of yours.
I'm sorry, you definitely have a decent understanding of WC but you get some things wrong.
You have to have boxing like drills to train the techniques properly. NO WC TECHNIQUE STAYS! It's just that bong sau stays less than the rest.
Example: you throw the straight punch, clench the fist on impact & immediately relax. THE REASON WHY IS SO YOU CAN INSTANTANEOUSLY USE IT FOR SOMETHING ELSE. A pak sao, gaun sao or whatever. To develop this stuff, you need to train them like a boxer. Look at old, pre 1850's pugilism in England, near identical concepts.

Nah I have very little respect for this guy Mike . He puts down some art's. Kung Fu covers a lot . There is a lost art of Iron Fist/Iron Palm I won't box per say. And he just laughed at me . I'm still trying to figure out what he teaches Why did Iron Fist or Palm died out . It's really a underground fighting art . Yeah most striking art's do little hand conditioning but I'm on steroids so to speak so open hands would be a softer way . And open Palm is better for internal striking. Now am I a martail artist I say no. I'm just into hitting 1 inch concrete blocks . Punching through these blocks vs face and head's you do the math ? This is why I like Wing Chun . It would be a good extension for what I'm practicing. I'm breaking even when I chop a forearms or biceps . But Micky does is lol people he disagree with . Like me I'm 6ft at 293 pds . Kicking high is to risky period in the streets hey if someone can pull it off great but if you failing can put you in a bad situation. Well that's my opinion on that issue . See are bodies are different so what would work for you may not fair well with me due to levels some people are at in knowledge but Mike doesn't think on things of this nature . He thinks Brazilian Jujitsu is great . I say no for the street's. That's a bad concept I carry knives do you really want to be on the ground with a knife fighter ? Now Japanese Jujitsu is the ticket . It has all the elements punching throwing trapping grappling and its a combat system but almost a life time to learn at the age of 54 my lifetime is short. But back to Wing Chun there only one school in my area at and its one day a week at 40 dollors a week so in turn 160 a month for 4 classes. Nope not for me the other school is 40 min away but I have to take the C19 jabbaroe to go into that school so learning it is nil . I wish a school would bring this true art back . It is really a cool system. I can take JKD its close in nature correct me if Im wrong . But I feel it's to bouncy for me . I rather stay kinda flat footed get in and t.c.b. I take no joy in hurting someone. But there no honor in the street's. Is it really possible to learn Wing Chun in your own home ?
