A good captain is one that keeps CRM going even when the pressure starts rising, could be a technical issue, bad weather, etc. A lot of captains have good CRM until you actually need CRM 😅
Spent 38 years in OPS with Northwest........loved it and the crews who do a spectacular job. Lucky enough my son is a senior captain now on the 737 so its come full circle......loved every day on the job,,,,,,,,,,
@@FlyingwithBigErn not all of your video got corrupted. Spent many a hour in that building and it's predecessor(s). Didn't take but a second to notice the error.

Hi, Ernie. I'm so happy to see you taking advantage of the free mountain bike experience at your hotel. I'm a 72-year-old Navy veteran and former America West ramp agent, and I can appreciate the workout you also probably enjoyed. God bless.
One thing that is often overlooked is that captains have to be chameleons as well. Each FO has different styles of learning, communication, knowledge, experience, etc. As a captain, you have to adapt to your FO just like he or she adapts to you, if you want to establish good CRM. When I was an FO many moons ago, trying to adjust to each captain and figure out their unique preferences, styles, etc., was a big challenge. After I upgraded, I began to realize just how much I needed to adjust as well. Part of being a good captain and mentor is knowing how to guide the development of your FO's and learning as much from them as they might from you. Too many captains forget that and adopt a my way or the highway attitude, which can destroy CRM. Just my $0.02 😊
Captains should effectively communicate with their FOs but there is only ONE authority on each aircraft. FOs must adapt to each Captain's style, respect, and OBEY their Captains.
Obey within the scope of SOP... In the case of an autocratic CPT making mistakes, a good FO will challenge, and cpt must react ! Respecting the authority is not blinding obeying just because of CPT status.
@@FlyingFender One never needs to obey an illegal order. That's a given that needs no mention. The more common occurrence is insubordination to legal orders.
We had some great SW pilots coming out of KSEA on flight 662 on Saturday but man I hate coming out of SeaTac. Every time it is about hour taxi time because of design of their terminals and opposing taxiways. Hopefully they will get some good engineers in there someday to help out. Now Vegas has always been easy in and out! Good video as always and COS is always great views!! Also....Our Captain on flight was great. He was helping them wheel people down to plane, was greeting people coming on, was making announcements, and talking to them coming off. Had very positive vibe, like you. Plus the flight crew was true SW....the announcements were entertaining and straight forward. When we aren't flying ourselves we always use SW!!
I'm a part 135 FO upgrading to CA soon. I've familiarized myself with captain duties and responsibilities and am ready to assist the PIC however I can. The captains know they can trust me to get things done and like to fly with me because they can relax especially when I'm PF. Still very far away from a legacy but working hard to get there.
Captain… my two year old and I watch your videos every week! She loves anything to do with airplanes. Her first flight is next February going from BWI to Orlando for a Disney trip on of course SWA! Maybe you’ll be our pilot 😉
I haven't entered the working pilot world but from my limited CPL theory knowledge, a great FO is someone who handles their responsibilities in the most effective way that allows for the captain to have the mental capacity and low task saturation level to devote to the responsibilities he has. A great FO is one who is an equal partner in the decision-making process and is unafraid to be the safeguard in the moments where the captain may have an OOPSIE (intentionality notwithstanding) procedure or decision wise.
Love the channel, LUV the Southwest.. keep it up. *Damn saw that this was posted 1 minute ago wanted to be the first comment but this is so popular I was too late for that 😁
Any content you show is good content, Big Ern, so not to worry about the corrupted content 😁... "...so, Dakota, what makes a good captain?..." asked the captain....😆 Excellent video as always, and I LOVED the Flight Radar 24 clip that you used to show your progress...
Ern! Love your stuff and am a huge fan. That being said, my guy, as a Northern Cali guy here, you can't be using SMF terminal footage for COS.... Come on now my guy!!
The best captains let the FO fly the way they want within the bounds of SOP. Many times there are two ways to skin a cat. Also just telling the FO what to do. Have the FO make decisions or ask them what they would like (what approach they would like, which way they would like to deviate etc.
A good FO is first and foremost ADAPTABLE! He/she must willingly SUBMIT to authority. FOs must adjust to each Captain's leadership style and respect his/her authority. Many FOs operate as if they are in charge. They are NOT!
Not an FO or pilot but I will say a great FO is one who is not afraid to speak up when things are not done right. Also a great FO is one who sees the captain as an equal and therefore offer solutions that will benefit flight operations. Also a great captain is one who knows when to say help and not let pride in get in the way flying a plane. At the same time a great captain is one who owns up to their mistakes and offers up solutions not excuses for their mistakes. Work with their FO follow the CRM guidelines. Remember both of you got the airplane up into the sky therefore both you need to bringing it down safety. If my eye sight was better I would love to work as a airline pilot. I would make an excellent FO.
Actually a great FO recognizes that the FO and Captain are not equals. When FOs act like they are equals with the Captain, there are always issues. That being said a good Captain treats his crew with great professional respect and values their input. It has become a problem in the industry over the past few years as the experience level of newhire FOs has gone way down. Some of these young guys act like they’re the same as the Captain and that’s not how a properly functioning cockpit works.
@@FlyingwithBigErn Man, that was definitely not about you. I was just talking about some fat ass Southwest pilots that carry a lunchbox. Their waistline has definitely exceeded the whole short line. …..lol Not trying to be mean, I was just playing around.

The FO's primary job is to ensure the captain does not have any additional paperwork to do upon arrival.
