That was fantastic Josh.I will now do my faded garden chairs
Awesome! How'd they turn out?
Sweet! Going to try this on my faded plastic mailbox.
Aaaaah! So quick and simple and helpful!!! Thanks!!
You're welcome!
Exactly what I am going to be refurbishing. Thanks for the vid!!
You’re welcome!
Outdoor chairs... Really works! Thank you Josh.
You bet Mike!
I found an old toy motorcycle outside (plastic for kids) that I'm going to try and restore. It's great to know I don't need to paint it or something. This looks super simple and I'm very excited to try it! Thanks!
OMG I just did it on the propane tank cover on my prod. Turned it from grey to black. Awesome thanks
Don't forget to put on a UV protectant spray so it'll stay bright longer!
Thanks so much! Greetings from the UK!
I did this on a faded plastic picnic table. It worked incredibly!!
Don't forget to condition it every once an awhile or the UV exposure will dry it again :) Enjoy!
Any recommendations for a uv protectant?
By chance, when working on a dirt bike project CR 125 back in 1989, I discovered this little trick when using a hand held propane torch near the (completed faded, oxidized) fender of the bike, for a completely different repair. Sometimes unintended consequences work for the better.... but, heat gun is much better than the torch, no doubt
Nice! And agreed - heat gun is the better way to go ;)
Wow!!! I’m going to try this on some plastic doll houses that have oxidized very quickly. Thanks for the tip!!!
👍
cannot wait to try this on the little red wagon that the kids have outgrown, but is now ready for grandkids
Make sure to clean it with a UV protector every so often so that it doesn't fade again!
Awesome! We’ve got some plastic outside chairs I’m gonna try this on. Excited to see how they turn out. Thanks!
Good luck!
It only lasts a few days
Nice, very effective way to revive plastic. Thanks! 👍
You're welcome.
Thanks man. I’m gonna redo the plastics on my both my sons old quads. They got old 90’s 4x4’s.
How'd it turn out?
Still works! Video under rated
Enjoy!
Thank you for the tip! I've been wanting to renew my second hand hitch mounted bike rack for years now and had no idea what to do.
You're welcome!
I want to brighten the faded plastic seats on my grandsons swing set. I will try this. Thank you.
👍
What a great tip, thank you. I’m going to try it on my faded plastics on my old scooter tomorrow.
👍🏻
Did you try it? How are those plastic pieces looking now?
@@ephraimkaravan yes, it worked so good. And my buddy did his bike also. Awesome trick, thanks
Perfect - I'm going to attempt this on some old faded pelican suitcases .
Might also look at some of the plastic specific re conditioners for something like that. If you do go the heat route - nice and slow.
Thank you for that. Bloody brilliant!
Enjoy!
Very instructive and explained.. thank you..👍
You're welcome.
Thank you for this video! You have a new subscriber! I'm going to to this on my Sloggers. 😍
Welcome aboard!
My Jeep Fenders! Thanks for the tip!
You bet!
Great video! Would the heat gun technique work on a faded resin base (for a very large outdoor umbrella)?
Awesome! Now I need a heat gun. Thanks so much!
Once you have a heat gun you'll find lots of uses for it!
It’s only lasts a a few days
That’s amazing thank you for sharing 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼😃😃😃😃
No problem 👍
My kayak it was a beautiful neon green and is now like mint green. The kayak is an expensive one and still in perfect shape other than the fading
Go slow and the make sure to coat the boat every once in awhile with a UV protection spray so it doesn't fade again!
For cleaning spots off anything plastic ( phones, etc) use Pledge and buff with terry cloth. Leaves a great shine, too.
Thanks for the tip!
Oh my goodness. Gonna try this on my stroller .
Let me know your results!
Thanks bro I'm about to start my sons power wheel restore the hole thing
👍 Enjoy the project!
nice tip, thanks dude!
👍
Awesome help
👍
Thank you SO much for that! While i was trying to restore a very old computer with Peroxide, i noticed that the bleach effect was a bit too much and left some patches and marks on the surface. Your tip made most of the surfaces look much better!
Glad to hear it!
@@GanderFlight will this work into turning old yellowish plastic into new white again? Hydrogen peroxide destroys paint so I want to try other methods.
@@BOREDANDWELLBORED Most likely it will NOT work on yellowed white paint. Maybe try on an inconspicuous spot and report back!
@@GanderFlight It's yellowed white PLASTIC, not paint. It's the high top of my Ford van, it's white plastic, nothings painted. I haven't tried it yet and hoping others have. Thanks for the reply
@@BOREDANDWELLBORED Yeah sorry, that was just a mistype on my part -- I don't think it will work with white plastic if it has yellowed - but I've never tried it.
Thank you so much!

I need to restore 6 new sun covers for ray marine instruments on my boat .
New covers are 34.00 a piece. So for 204.00 dollars,
I thank you for saving me that amount of money.
I will now go on Amazon and get a heat gun!

Enjoy Bill! I'd also recommend cleaning the plastic with a protectant made to withstand UV rays so I'll stay darker longer - never ending battle on a boat!
Thanks
No problem
I really need to buy a heat gun!! I do the same technique with a torch with a long list of failed Is oops I stayed in one spot too long Items. Lol thank you for the Is much wiser approach! Lol
Definitely a better tool for the job.
Very cool
👍🏻
Super dope
I'm glad you found it helpful.
Great advice!!! Im going to restore a throttle on a boat ---it'll be choice! Thanks again!!!😁
Make sure when you’re done to coat it with a plastic cleaner/uv protector- that way it stays darker longer!
@@GanderFlight ok super will do!!!...do you recommend anything specific?
I don’t - anything marketed as a plastic UV protectant should do you well.
Super!! Thank you for taking time to reach out!!! Much appreciated!
Hi, thanks! Does this only make it look better, or does it make it a bit softer and more flexible? I have a plastic seat on a toy riding horse that cracked because it is so brittle. Is there a way to infuse more oil in or something?
Nope - only affects looks.
nice job
Thanks!
Great! I will do it on my faded LPG Tank
👍
The tank will expand and crack the paint as you apply the heat so it pays to open the valve and let the gas escape while you are doing it. 💥☠️😁
I had a couple handles from an old rusty and weather tool box I was restoring. On a hunch I rubbed them down with mineral oil, and it seemed to work pretty well. I don't know the chemistry of what occurred. But I might try combining this heating method and then applying the mineral oil while the pores are still open. Think that'll add to it, or is that just overkill? Or even counterproductive?
I’m not sure, give it a try and report back!
Try olive oil. I use the aerosol type for easier application. I get the store brand from Walmart. Keep overspray off unintended area with a clean separate microfiber cloth. I rub in the oil with a mirofiber cloth as well as lightly buffing after a few minutes. Apply to projects out of direct sunlight. Works well on bedliner to. Be sure to test for slipperyness. Buff off excess after few minutes usually takes most of slipperyness but testing makes sense. Although plastic bedliners are notoriously slippery anyway .
@@tedthornton7791olive oil being organic will degrade. Only mineral oil as vaseline or parafine should be used.
Going to try this on motorcycle mirrors. Will update on the results soon
Make sure you coat them with some UV protection afterwards
fantastic trick with the heat gun. Did you know that these plastics melt about the same temperature as solder? You can repair cracked plastic by adding more from the back side and melting it in to weld the crack shut. If you do it ion the pretty side it will not look good. But if it's broekn or failing this is a great trick too!
I've repaired a few things that way too!
Hi Joshua,
I love that idea! Thank you.
I have an additional problem and wondering if you might have a solution. I have several thick plastic engineering templates that smell awful. I would love to know how to get rid of that smell because I plan to use them in my graphic art.
Hello Fred! Thanks for watching. Sorry I don't have much advice on getting rid of the smell you're experiencing.
Thick plastic? Are they old/vintage? Smells like vomit? Might be butyric acid. I have an old Craftsman screwdriver with a CLEAR plastic handle that smells particularly awful. www.google.com/search?q=butyric+acid+old+plastic
Going to try this on my gas tank thank you ☺️☺️
Heat and gas tank --- please use obvious caution
I have a 2003 Yamaha I'm going to try that on. Its supposed to be green but it's more white because of the oxidation. Thanks in advance if it works
Let me know how it works out for you!
I did this on my avalanche plastics and good as new but in a year got back to the same grey look .
Absolutely true- if you don’t then proceed to protect it from the UV exposure it will absolutely fade again.
I just use the McGuire's black magic every 6 months and that seems to the trick
I was looking for a way to restore my outdoor plastic chairs...I saw this idea or using olive oil.
I haven't tried either, but this ideas makes more sense. Thanks for this post! What heat gun do you recommend using?
Any heat gun will work - all the entry level ones will be identical. Just go slow and start farther away - you can always apply more heat but once it bubbles and melts you can't go back.
Heyy! Nice work! Does it work only on black plastic? I have grey pieces I want to refurbish.
I'm sure it will work on other colors - but I've never tried it and don't know if the colors will change shades at all. Give it a try and let me know!
Going to try this on Little Tykes turtle sandbox and alligator teeter totter
Remember to then pickup something to wipe on that will protect is from the suns UV rays - otherwise it'll fade again and this isn't something you could do over and over - the pieces will eventually become brittle an crack.
Awesome! I'm refurbishing an old 120qt ice chest because it's a custom fitting piece for my boat. I can't just buy a new one, they don't make this size anymore. I'm planning on spraying it with bedliner after fixing a few dents, dings and small holes but the very top lip I don't want to do with bedliner as it would affect the seal from the top. I need to use your trick on this little strip of plastic just at the top of the walls where the lid lays down to.
Just remember that you'll then need to protect it form UV rays somehow otherwise it wont be long before it fades again. Might also check out automotive trim restorers like this: amzn.to/3SzIFOC
@@GanderFlight good point & thanks for that link!
doing a plastic bumper and trim around the jeep!! thanks!!
Remember to use a UV protectant on it afterwards or it'll just happen again.
Would this work on the faded plastic on vehicles? Will it leaves marks or does it blend together as you go?
I've seen folks use it on vehicle trim - go slow - If you burn it you can't go back.
Going to try this on our dog kennel.
👍
Does it work on brittle/faded plastic fan blades by chance? Got an old desk fan branded Phillips from the 1980's and the blades have gone off gray and other parts have gone brittle. Also does it work on curing the brittle plastic? Thanks
Nope - will definitely not help any plastic become less brittle
I am working on a older nautical clock for my husband, their is one part of the clear plastic lens that is faded. Would this also work for this project?
I’d be hesitant with clear plastic- if you try is go real slow and super low
I have outdoor plastic furniture but it’s woven in design. Any ideas for oils that work?
Have you given this a try?
Wow, nice idea, i didn't even think this way 😅
Thanks for watching!
Will this work on like controller or 3ds xl or any kind of plastic
I don't know.
Can you do this on white glossy plastic that has turned cream from sun fade or old Nintendo consoles?
I haven't tried it - my guess is no, it would not turn it back to white, but honestly don't know.
This works very well. This works because the oils deeper in the plastic come to the surface and make it shiny again. The downside is that all the oils in the plastic will disappear if you do it multiple times. I do this sometimes but I prefer to use plastic polish.
Any specific product you prefer for the plastic polish?
@@GanderFlight Polytrol is good. It refills the plastic with oil. The faded look on plastic is because of the top layer getting evaporated.
@@mathiasdankertsen9093 Polytrol? may I ask, where do you pick that product up? When I tried to search for Polytrol, nothin came up.
Could this solution be applied to polymer utilized in the firearms manufacturing sector?
No clue.
I started to do this on a canoe I picked up very cheap. Have you tried the boiled linseed oil and thinner method? I was wondering if it is any faster.
I have not heard of that method, I'll have to look it up.
I have a 2019 Jeep Wrangler and the ABS bumpers are starting to fade, mmm. Give it a try.:)?
Can also give these a try: ua-cam.com/video/XXOX4z6uwXo/v-deo.html
can this be used on clear/transparent plastic as well?
I haven't tried! I doubt it would turn yellowed plastic clear again though.
Does it help to prep anyway before heating...., light sanding or clean with a chemical?
It'd be best to clean with soap and water.
Will this work on the black handles on our van
Without more information I can’t give an opinion, but I have seen it work well on the trim pieces of vehicles yes.
That is very cool. I need something on a much smaller scale though. Heat gun would not be an option. Any tips?
Small butane torch?
@@GanderFlight perhaps. It's an old game controller I'm looking to restore. Worth a try.
A little bit of genius. Off to buy a heat gun, hopefully I wont burn down the house!
Once done make sure to use some UV protectant spray to keep it from happening again.
How about all the plastic flower pots I have that have faded great idea hope it works save me a lot of money in paint!!!!!!
oo interesting idea - did it work on them?
I did this around , 6 years agon ap simple
👍
Hi, first time viewer. Would this be safe to use on faded plastic fairings on motorcycles (following safety procedures of course)?
I think it would work well - go slow and then make sure to find a UV protector to coat it afterwards that you’d apply every few months to keep it from fading again.
@@GanderFlight Thanks, great channel :)
What ever is the side Effect, Right now effect Looks Awesome.
Just remember to treat is with a UV protector - or it will just fade again in the sun.
Will this method work on car bumpers, and side mirrors?
I have seen it done on them yes- just remember to use something with UV protection as the sun will bleach it again. Also check out these options: ua-cam.com/video/XXOX4z6uwXo/v-deo.html

This will work for colored plastics as well - just remember to treat them with a UV protectant so it doesn't happen again
The subscribe picture at the end of the video looks like the craftsman logo lol
😂
great tip, thank you!
👍🏻
Question, how long does it last before fading again?
Depends on how much UV exposure the item receives and if you continue to treat it with a UV protection cleaner.
What about plastic bumpers on vehicles...fender flares...etc?
Would definitely work - just remember to put conditioner on it afterwards. I might look into ceramic coating wipes like Cerakote as well
That’s terrific! How did you figure out a heat gun would do this?
I came across the idea years ago on an ancient little tikes playset we got from a friend- then just started trying it on other plastics (that I wasnt afraid to melt and destroy!) and had it reconfirmed when I was doing research on repairing a hole in a canoe.
It only lasts a few days
Will this work on chaise lounges
Worth giving a try!
do you know if a blow dryer would do the same??
I don't think a blow dryer would get hot enough - try it and see.

How long does this technique last for ?
Depends on how much UV exposure the item receives and if you continue to treat it with a UV protection cleaner.
Many plastics are made with corn (canola oil).wash and rub old plastics with Canola oil. It will stay good again for a while while heating dries the core
thanks for the tip!
Smell? Volatile compounds? Do you think this might degrade the longer term stability of the plastic item?
Absolutely wear a respirator for safety- yes you are basically burning plastic so take the necessary precautions.
It only lasts a few days anyways, not worth it
@@jakewoolley1135 lol, how many times are you going to try and ruin this thread? Go throw rocks at passing cars, that'll get someone's attention.
Jake I’m sure if you wanted to keep the item in good condition after you could always keep it out of the sun when you’re not using the item 😂
I think it might it only lasts a few days...at least that's what I've been seeing in the comments (hahaha)
Bro, I tried to clear my car plastic parts using lighter heat. While doing so, instead of insufficient heat, I used it's flame. Unfortunately, plastic lost its color and looking grey now. So, this trick will work there too???
Unfortunately too much missing information for me to give an opinion.
@@GanderFlight well, I replaced that whole part on my new car
Can you explain the physics/chemistry behind this effect?
The heat releases some of the oils in the plastic from further down - basically you're "slightly" melting it and the new melted plastic is more akin to the original color.
Does it work on white plastic?
Haven't tried - I think it would, it won't change yellowing plastic back to white.
Definitely going to try this on my son's john deere pedal tractor!
👍 Give it a good wipe down with a plastic UV protector when you're done and it'll look brand new!
This can work, the only issue is you're making it more brittle by leeching the plastic from within the product to the surface to make it look new again. Petrolatum (Petroleum Jelly) will allow you to have it be shiny again without causing the product to become brittle and break prematurely.
First time I've come across petroleum jelly recommendation for this situation - does it leave an oily residue?
@@GanderFlight Might depend on the plastic, but I used it on my faded cars plastic then rubbed it off with some paper towels pretty hard and it's fine to the touch. The issue is making sure you don't over-apply to begin with because that can end up making it more time consuming later on. I scooped out some petrolatum onto a paper plate then used nitrile gloves to spread it around on the plastic, then wiped it off with some paper towels until it seemed fine to touch (IDK if rags would work better, but the plastics still have their shine even w/ paper towels)
Basically it can if you don't wipe it all off, IDK if all plastics will react the same either. There's a few videos online showing others doing the same to similar results IIRC.
@@NooneStaarcan't make it brittle. If anything makes it less brittle by allowing a homogeneous property with the surface. Come on it's like you left oakmeal dry on top and mix it up again. The final result cann. Ot be worse. I see too much guessing without scientific facts behind it. Plastics are recycled and reused by heating melting and solidifying. Any reduction of properties are close to nothing. I have a degree in plastics and moulding.
if you use petroleum jelly on chairs will it damage your clothes when they come in contact with it when you sit in the chairs? Does it cause any of the color to come off (I have brown plastic lawn chairs)?
@@mollydog444 Might be fine if you wipe off excess with a paper towel but I'm not sure. I've found that the results for car parts last 3-6ish months max and you need to wipe off periodically especially on hot days or it can come out and streak or so.
Tryed that hair dryer ?
I haven't - may or may not get warm enough - worth a try!
