Jack was a family friend, and I've been thinking about him a lot these past couple days, which brought me here. He tried to convince my Mom to get me into acting, but she thought I was too young. Now in my 30s, I'm pursing it. It has a lot to do with Jack. I miss him dearly.

As a young guy in New York , I saw him passing by on the sidewalk. I said " hey Jack Palance ! " . Perhaps I was just a bit too enthusiastic. He kind of looked at me and and growled . Haha. Never forget it .

For those that don't know. Jack Palance is a WWII veteran. He served in the Army Air Corps and was injured. He was burned on his face partially disfiguring him. Palance was tough as nails as they say.
On his deathbed he said the story of him being burned was "hogwash" "they'd have given me a better face if they had" A great wonderful actor, greatly missed and unrepeatable.. A giant of a man who wrote and read poetry.

I had the great honor of being with Jack that night. We went to the Mondrian Hotel on the Sunset Strip afterwards. While there, he did a short piece with ABC News. On the way back to his seat, a hand grabbed his shoulder and a voice said --"Jack...you did one for the old guys." It was Martin Landau who would win his own 3 years later. (By the way, that's his daughter, Holly, sitting next to him at Oscars.) The next day he was was working on "Legends of the West," a documentary TV series.
Landau and Palance did two low budget horror movies in the 80s (Without Warning and Alone in the Dark) and its fun to see two great actor AND future Oscar winners try to out batshit crazy each other. That's a recommendation!

But he was 73 at the time, and there are more than a few (relative) men in their 70's (and even beyond) who can do those basic strength exercises. You just have to stay fit. I remember watching this live while visiting LA. Guys like Palance are a reminder of more masculine actors, with tons of personality, from a different era.
Charles Bronson almost played Curley when Jack had a scheduling conflict, but Bronson was angry that his character died, so he refused the role. Jack was able to do it after all and the rest is history!

City Slickers one of my favorite films and for a long time I questioned why Jack Palance got the Oscar nod, he probably has a total of 15 minutes screen time. But as I got older I realized, you truly believed that man was a badass cowboy, no questions asked.

I remember watching this live while visiting LA. Guys like Palance are a reminder of more masculine actors, with tons of personality, from a different era.

Charles Bronson almost played Curley when Jack had a scheduling conflict, but Bronson was angry that his character died, so he refused the role. Jack was able to do it after all and the rest is history!

City Slickers one of my favorite films and for a long time I questioned why Jack Palance got the Oscar nod, he probably has a total of 15 minutes screen time. But as I got older I realized, you truly believed that man was a badass cowboy, no questions asked.

I saw this real time. Coolest acceptance I have ever seen. I watched him on Jay Leno afterwards. He said that since he was called so early in the program, he hadn't had time to prepare anything to say. Jack Palance, Lee Marvin, and Jack Elam, classic, top tier, bad guys we loved to hate.
I seem to remember he was Walter Jack Palance in the classic movie ''Shane''. He was as scary as hell and the performance stands out to this day as an absolute classic. That had to be his greatest performance. I think it was in the early fifties.

What a man, what an actor, not to talk about Billy Cristal - living in such a country like mine, I just can dream of him coming to our FEST! Jack was an inspiring genius, let's not let personalities like him to be forgotten too soon for our benefit!
