Rafael França I disagree. I don’t think it makes a difference if the presenter says “the winner is” or “the Oscar goes to”. It means the same regardless of choice of words. At the 2018 Oscars when Jane Fonda announced Gary Oldman’s name, she said “And the winner is”. She could have easily said “And the Oscar goes to” and it wouldn’t have made a difference. The name that’s in the envelope is the winner regardless of how the presenter words it, because it means the same.
I personally believe that Michael Clarke Duncan should have won that award, his performance was one of the best I've ever seen. Absolutely phenomenal. But you have to love the humility of Michael Caine.
Yeah he obviously didn't think he deserved that oscar, but he handled his win with dignity and humility, and that was beautiful to see. Besides Michael Duncan said that he was happy just being nominated. Also very humble and appreciative.
Michael Clarke Duncan's performance was extraordinary in that movie but Michael Caine's performance in cider house rules was just marvelous.great acting.
Also, Michael Clarke Duncan was like the first person to stand up when Michael Caine won. That's class. Even he did deserve this Award, and yes Michael Caine was great in the film he won this Oscar for, he was still a great person, to both show that he's professional as well as just happy to just have been nominated.
I can't wrap my mind around the fact that such heavyweights in acting as Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and Judi Dench only have Oscars for supporting roles
A beautiful speech from a beautiful man. I personally would have voted for cruise but Michael said it best when he said there are no winners. Sir michael has one of the greatest careers ever and he's still going strong!

There's a bigger scope to the moment than people realize: Michael Caine had won an Oscar in 1986 for "Hannah and Her Sisters," but he was filming the terrible film "Jaws 4" at the time, and the studio wouldn't give him a few days off to even attend the ceremony. What makes his speech all the more amazing for me isn't just what he said, but that he was given the chance to finally accept the award.
@@tiaaaron3278 yes, it's probably the reason why the people who deserved an Oscar were robbed because of him! Cate Blanchett not Gwyneth Paltrow, Ellen Burystn not Julia Roberts.
I've always enjoyed Michael Caine's acting, even in the poorer films he made, but I could never understand how he won the Oscar that year and watching this clip almost 20 years on it's even more astounding to me. The other 4 nominees all provided great performances in now bonafide classic iconic roles. Cruise, Clarke-Duncan, Osmant and Law all would have been deserving that year.
I’ve always loved the fatherly presence of Michael Caine. Especially from when he took on the role of Alfred, for Batman. The man always has a look of compassion and comes across as someone who truly wants the best for you doesn’t he? It reflects in his speech too. He wants the best for every other nominee too. What a gentleman and what a brilliant acceptance speech. “Do you have any idea as to how much we supporting actors get paid?” Brilliant!
He's been a hard working actor for almost all his life. And he had to accept quite iffy roles just for the rent money up to his sixties. This was the start of the part of his career when he could accept roles just for the fun of it and not just because he had to. Sometimes, it's crazy to think how they can choose between so many amazing acting performances. He was right, there are no winners because they were all great.
This really should have been Cruise's Oscar - his performance in Magnolia was exceptional stuff - but Caine is so gracious here that it's hard to mind. class 101 on how to accept an Oscar like a gentleman.

And, despite the fact that I really liked Michael Caine's acting in The Cider House Rules, and despite my belief that Hayley Joel Osment is the best child actor I have ever seen, I still think that Oscar should have taken Michael Clarke Duncan. His acting as John Coffey in The Green Mile was truly the best acting I have ever seen. It was simply unattainable!
What's really cool is only 3 years after this even took place Michael Caine and Haley Joel Osment starred in a movie together called "Secondhand Lions" where Michael along with Robert Duval played Haley's reclusive and enigmatic uncles. Great movie if you guy's have never seen it before.

Cruise deserved to win for Magnolia. The only time he's truly deserved it.
a____________a Wrong. He deserved it for Born on the 4th of July & Jerry McGuire also. He should have been nominated for Rain Man.
@@rgrndu He should have been nominated for Collateral as well.
He got robbed for "Born on the Fourth of July" - still his best acting job ever.
Tia Aaron definitely for collateral
A real, real gentleman. A nice and beautiful acceptance speech.
Magnolia was so overlooked!
Man look at the whole room standing up clapping and cheering for Sir Michael Caine. Incredible.
This was either Tom Cruise's Michael Clarke Duncan's or Haley Joel Osment's award! Especially Tom Cruise
Brad Pitt should have won to for Fight Club
all were astonishing, such a shame only one won, but thankfully he talked about the rest of them :)
whatever, Jude Law was overlooked.
It was all 5 oscar. Punto.
Only The Academy would snub three masterful and career-defining performances and another amazing one to give the award to a really good performance, to an actor who already won a supporting Oscar before this, and for a film almost nobody remembers. Caine's wonderful speech saves this from being a moment everyone hates on today.
