For Whitney, Did not have a wag bag. Checked Ranger cabin at Crabtree for one but no luck. To be honest, the big draw for me was Forester Pass NOBO. It just looked intimidating. Definitely a highlight for me, although my short trip was just full of wonderment!
Thanks Adam! Best of luck on your Nobo hike. We have permits for the Yosemite High Sierra Camps Loop in August and Rae Lakes Loop in September. Going to be buggy and there will be tricky water crossings this year. Be careful on the passes Adam!
Nice! My daughter and I were there at the Cottonwood Lakes trailhead just a few days after you. And then we came back and did nearly the same route to Whitney just about three weeks after you. Very fun to watch.

Great video you two! We're planning on a similar itinerary for this coming summer to finish our final section of the JMT NOBO :) We had hiked the JMT SOBO in 2019, and really loved this section over Forester, and through the Bighorn Plateau. It's amazing how the scenery changes going the opposite direction! Happy trails!
My son and I started out of the same trailhead this past July but a little sooner.. out start date was July 7. The north bound route ended up being, I think, a lot better for us than south bound… more days on trail and more miles! We loved it!
@@RickandAndreaGetOutside we started from HSM on July 7 so we were a few days behind. We took our time because we just wanted to enjoy the trip. We did 22 days hiking… some days we were done at 1 p.m…. I think our latest day was 3 p.m. or so. A couple days we really burned some miles. We did 11 miles before 10 a.m to get into Reds Meadow for breakfast!! LOL We were on a very similar itinerary to what you did. We are planning the HST this July 2022 as well!! Almost permit time!!!

Thanks so much Dennis! I've thought about gear videos but haven't got around to making one yet. I was glad to have brought the solar cell, that worked great keeping our devices charged up. Wish I would have brought my ultralight camp chair, was tired of sitting on my bear canister or rocks after 3 weeks, would have liked to have the back support, will probably take it when we hike in Yosemite next month.

Hi Zach, thanks so much! I carried the Goal Zero Nomad 10 solar panel and was very happy with it. I'm a bit paranoid about running out of juice so also carried 2 batteries. As it turned out I could have done without the 2nd battery as the solar cell worked great. I plugged in the battery to the cell and charged as we walked. During longer breaks I would set it up for max sun. It kept the battery charged up to near full most days. Going to take it again when we do the High Sierra Trail in July, will only take one battery this time!

Thanks Bruce! That could very well be a bristle cone tree but they are not very prevalent in that area. I have seen the amazing bristle cone forest in the White Mountains east of the Sierras. Very much worth a visit if you get to California!

Hi Trish and Larry! Thanks so much! I assume you mean Rock Creek not Wallace Creek as that is a little past Crabtree Meadow. Looking at the FarOut app, there is a campsite 5.7 miles past Chicken Spring Lake (PCT Mile Mark 757.7), about 3 miles before the Rock Creek camping spot. There may be other spots to camp in between, just remember to look for a durable surface (leave no trace principles) to pitch your tent. Hope this helps!

Thanks Jeff! We left as much as we could in our tent at Guitar Lake, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, stove, etc. Left our food in the bear canister, just brought the snacks we needed. Basically just had some extra layers and water. The hike up to Whitney was easier than we expected, helped to have spent 3 days above 10,000 feet to get acclimated. Then when we got back to Guitar Lake and as you probably figured out from the video we packed up and headed down to Crabtree Meadow. Worked out fairly well. Are you planning to hike the JMT this summer? Nobo?
@@RickandAndreaGetOutside In 2017 a buddy and I were going to do 1000 Island Lakes to Horseshoe SOBO but there were still feet and feet of snow. So we opted for the Collegiate Loop on the Colorado Trail (highly recommend). Been trying to get back west ever since. I actually planned the trip from your 1st video from scratch and was within 3/10 of your mileage. So your video 1 trip is possible! I might even do it solo. A full JMT NOBO trip might be more challenging due to low mileage days (I can't picture myself going 15-20 per day and enjoying it) and that I live in VA and have to be done by early August at the latest (teaching). We will see. I have to watch your other parts! The JMT has always been a dream. Did you like NOBO? Advantage = sun at your back?
@@jeffandre3007 we definitely want to do the CT someday. This summer we are planning to hike the High Sierra Trail, going to try to get the permit for July next week. NOBO worked out really well for us. Over the 21 days hiking, (22 total with one zero) we averaged just under 13 miles but as you'll see in Part 2 we had a 4 day stretch where we averaged 17+ miles per day, VVR rest day was much needed after that. I think some of the passes are easier NOBO but some are easier SOBO. Biggest advantage it seems of going NOBO is not having to do that big climb out of Yosemite Valley. That said, we would like to go SOBO someday starting from Tuolumne Meadows. I might consider a different resupply strategy next time. As you can see in the vids we did the resupply trips to Onion Valley/Independence and VVR. These resupply side trips added 30 miles and several days to the trip. Might do resupply at MTR/Reds/Tuolumne if I did the JMT again.

Thanks! Yes, I can send you a spreadsheet of our itinerary. We spendt the night before we started at Horseshoe Meadows which is at 10.000'. The first day wasn't too bad with 1700' of gain and were able to get acclimated a little more. Felt fully acclimated by Guitar Lake. We live in San Diego, basically at Sea Level. Got your follow request, accepted. Living in SoCal gives us a chance to see how we do at high altitude. Lots of hiking above 9000-10000 feet near us. Good luck with your permit.
9:17 this is not Trail Crest, but Trail Junction. You never reach Trail Crest if you do not leave to Whitney Portal. Trail Junction is about 13.2k or 13.3k elevation.
Hi Henning Rech, yes, I got this wrong. I realized later that Trail Crest is another quarter mile or so down the trail and a few hundred feet higher. I did manage to get it labeled correctly in my HST video. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching!
What a beautiful trip! I've seen countless PCT videos, and the JMT part always stuck in my head. It definitely is one of the most beautiful hikes I've ever seen. But I never thought it could be a thing for me since I'm in my early 50ies and the body hurts here and there. But your video ripens the decision in me to tackle it anyway. At least the planning. It's a dream, but hey, dreams are not out there to stay dreams, they are out there to become true! By the way how was the moskito situation during your trip? Best regards from Germany. Hi Reiner - You should definitely plan to hike the JMT. I'm 58 and wasn't sure initially that I was up to the task. I'm so glad I hiked this beautiful trail with my wife. Fortunately we encountered very few mosquitos which I believe is due to the low amount of snow that fell in the Sierras last winter.

When you select the permit you pick a starting Trailhead. We got a permit for Cottonwood Pass as our entry point in the Inyo National Forest. The permit doesn't actually say anything about Horseshoe Meadows. You can also get a permit for the Cottonwood Lakes trailhead. You can get to the PCT via either trail. Hope this helps.

Thanks! Yes, I can send you a spreadsheet of our itinerary. We spendt the night before we started at Horseshoe Meadows which is at 10.000'. The first day wasn't too bad with 1700' of gain and were able to get acclimated a little more. Felt fully acclimated by Guitar Lake. We live in San Diego, basically at Sea Level. You can private message me on Instagram (rsarpolus) with an email address and I will send you the spreadsheet. Are you planning to hike the JMT this year?
@@RickandAndreaGetOutside thank you for the quick reply! I would love to get a copy of your spreadsheet. My friend and I are planning to hike the JMT this year if we can obtain a permit. We are looking at different options to achieve this, I.e NOBO, getting a walk up permit (if they do that this year), or starting at Lyell. We both live at basically sea level (1200 ft) and are worried about acclimating. I just sent you a follow request on IG and will send you my email after approval. Thank you!
Got your follow request, accepted. Living in SoCal gives us a chance to see how we do at high altitude. Lots of hiking above 9000-10000 feet near us. Good luck with your permit.
9:17 this is not Trail Crest, but Trail Junction. You never reach Trail Crest if you do not leave to Whitney Portal. Trail Junction is about 13.2k or 13.3k elevation.
Hi Henning Rech, yes, I got this wrong. I realized later that Trail Crest is another quarter mile or so down the trail and a few hundred feet higher. I did manage to get it labeled correctly in my HST video. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching!
What a beautiful trip! I've seen countless PCT videos, and the JMT part always stuck in my head. It definitely is one of the most beautiful hikes I've ever seen.
But I never thought it could be a thing for me since I'm in my early 50ies and the body hurts here and there.
But your video ripens the decision in me to tackle it anyway. At least the planning. It's a dream, but hey, dreams are not out there to stay dreams, they are out there to become true!
By the way how was the moskito situation during your trip?

Hi Reiner - You should definitely plan to hike the JMT. I'm 58 and wasn't sure initially that I was up to the task. I'm so glad I hiked this beautiful trail with my wife. Fortunately we encountered very few mosquitos which I believe is due to the low amount of snow that fell in the Sierras last winter.

Great video, one question. What was the white clip dangling from your strap. I was curious what that was used for.

what did you label your starting point as on your permit? i know horseshoe meadows but is that what it says on permit
When you select the permit you pick a starting Trailhead. We got a permit for Cottonwood Pass as our entry point in the Inyo National Forest. The permit doesn't actually say anything about Horseshoe Meadows. You can also get a permit for the Cottonwood Lakes trailhead. You can get to the PCT via either trail. Hope this helps.
