In 2018 when my 15 year-old son and I finished our JMT hike on the top of Whitney he said, “Dad, why are all the adults crying?” Such an emotional experience and for different reasons for everyone. You guys are great film-makers. Excellent work!
You aren't kidding. I was one of 3 or 4 people at the time we went up that was getting emotional. Friends we made along the way said the same thing. People finishing after multiple attempts cut short by injuries, section hikers who'd been chipping away for years, and some people that were just in awe. Thanks for watching! Gracias! Nothing too extravagant planned. Heading back to the Sierra in a June for a couple days, glacier np for a backpack and hoping to do rim to rim at the Gand canyon in the fall. Our thru hiking days may have already come and gone
Thanks for the video! I've seen a couple of times in preparation for my own trip next year with my daughter. I'm always looking for clues to help us prepare. What packs did you guys use for this trip? Also was wondering- was there something different your wife was doing to avoid foot injury? Was her pack lighter or did use her trekking poles more? Or perhaps a better shoe and sock fit? Thank you!
It’s an amazing and brutal experience! Totally worth the effort. I used an 70L Osprey Aether and my wife sported an Exped Lightning 60L (I believe). Both skew a little towards the heavy side on their own. My pack clocked in at a hefty 48lbs when loaded, Katys was around 36ish. Definitely would cut some weight if I were to do it again but it wasn’t the worst. I’ve done a handful of backpacks with no foot issues but perhaps some good old fashioned wear and tear was the culprit. Maybe the heavier boot/fit. Recovered well though. Happy to answer any specifics you may have about your future JMT experience. If you have that itch, scratch it!
