Reviving a $10 Scrap Snow Blower (Vintage 80's Toro 521)

- I bought a $10 1980's Toro 521 snow blower. It did not run, did not have a fuel tank, had the dirtiest carburetor I had seen in years, and looked like it had been sitting for several decades... can we get it running?
I just handed down a Toro 421 that I bought in 1980 to my son and in the 40 years I had it I replaced one belt , rigged a cable for the drive handle , a carb ( seals dried out )and did oil and grease changes . knock on wood still starts on ONE pull. Those are great engines !!!!

We rebuilt small engines in shop class in high school. The teacher would check compression after we put them back together and I remember him grabbing a kids arm and touching the spark plug wire just as he pulled the starter rope. Kid got shocked and we all laughed. Oh those were the days. Probably get jail time for that now.

When I lived in NJ I found a real oldie (50’s maybe 60’s) Exposed real chain drive, no clutch (if she was running the auger was spinning) the only safety you had was a slip joint on the auger where if it’s stopped....if it stopped (most likely it would eat your finger clean off first)... it would bounce around to keep the motor running. This thing was an animal, and would throw snow like no other. I paid it forward to a neighbor when I moved still running like new.
Holy heck bud. Sounds like a MONSTER! I had an opportunity for a similar 3 stage unit from the early 60's, but missed out.
Just inherited one of these, changed the gas and gave the carburetor some love and it started right up! But it spewed oil from the crank case breather so I checked the cylinder and it was perfect, suspecting seized piston rings. Well, still long time to the winter, so I will occasionally start it and give it some WD40 in the cylinder in between!!
You did a great job breathing new life into that ole unit. I noticed that you did not put some anti seize on some of the smaller bolts like on the starter switch. One of the ways you could have dealt with the starter wire would have been to simply cut a channel into the tank mount. I hope you made a video of all that you did underneath the unit to grease her up and breath new life into her.
Doug, you could have unscrewed the oil dipstick to slide the E.S. wire out of the way in order to avoid those 1/4 bolts, done it a time or 2 when i was worried about snapping them.

I just sold a Toro 5hp 21in I replaced the drive wheel belts chute with craftsman/Murray chute carb. Scraper blade and skid shoe's and replace the muffler screws with stainless steel screw's

NIce save. I've purchased Hooai brand carbs and they seem to be of decent quality. There is at least one aftermarket carb manufacturer with an adjustable versions of that carburetor: Part number 632107a
Yea, I have purchased a few brands recently and they did not hold up like the Hooai ones. Thank you for the part number! That is huge!
@@DougvCarburetor, don't go solely by that part number, though. Some carbs with that part number have the spring loaded adjustable jet and others are fixed jet. The Hooai 632107a appears to be a fixed jet. The Aitook 632107a appears to have the adjustable jet.
I am in favor of sticking with the original Tecumseh carburetors where possible. When I took over maintenance of my landlord's 421 (basically the same engine as this one) it had a lawnmower carburetor swapped onto it by a neighbor with the heater box removed and as a result was almost impossible to start. I took a look at the original one and found that it just needed a good cleaning and a replacement needle valve and seat and I restored everything back to stock. Five years later it is still running well as I make sure to take all the gas out of the machine in the summer. However in many cases the carburetor is beyond saving and I would stick with an adjustable carburetor as a replacement.

I have to replace the gear in the gear box. They used regular bolts for shear pins. So I have all the parts. Are all gear box all the same. For my toro 521 is there a certain way the case and the shaft have to go together ? I seen a guy rebuild a craftsman and he said make sure you line this mark up with the mark on the case. So any input on me putting this thing back together. Today my parts will be here. Thanks
My dad bought another old ariens and when he started to work on it he found out that the spark plug was stripped out. Gonna try a helicoil, but was also talking about throwing another head on and keeping this one for just incase. Merry Christmas my bearded bears brother.

My front propeller unit thing never fully stops moving. It definitely slows down versus when it is engaged. Toro 521
Any ideas?
Belt too tight likely. If it is not stopping the engine is engaging the pulley to some extent when it shouldn't
What’s your suggestion on making it go I press down the drive handle and she creeps I checked the belts good with tension

Right off Amazon. They are usually under $20, though the quality is not the same as OEM would be.
Can you do a video how to tune a 8hp tecumseh that revs high. My Ariens St824 I feel runs a little high and the speed limiter. Doesn't lower the rpms much. Since my younger brother "tuned" it for me with out asking.
Its had gotten a brand new carburetor on it that is adjustable about 3 years ago now.
Haha.. Gotta love it when family "helps". Usually an over revving issues is a seized or sticky linkage issues. After that would be suspicious that perhaps the governor linkage was not installed properly when the carb was replaced. These are just the first two things that come to mind. That's odd, the carb i bought had the adjustable jets. Why not just put the adjustable ones into the new carb u got?

Slow down. It's not a race. Good video. These Toro snowblowers are decent little machines.
I use one that is over 40 years old. The engine is a bit tired (it didn't get good care for most of its life) but it starts easily with the recoil (it doesn't have electric start) and does a decent job and is reliable. Toro sold a lot of them.

When I start getting Mustie1 and BleepinJeep view numbers, perhaps. HAHA. Until this it is side work and a hobby
Carbs are so cheap, I'd just buy a new one. Those machines will last a life time if taken care of unlike this one.
