This package of solar panel, battery and pump seems to be a really great option for off-grid solar powered hydroponics systems.
It's certainly way better and more reliable than the small panel and pump I was previously using as it will run from first light to an hour or so after sunset, even on dull or rainy days.
I will upload update videos to the Thousand Yard Stare channel to keep you guys updated but I'm expecting great things from these systems this year.

I've been looking to create a small babbling brook and mini pond in my back garden, that is on a slope. Have been looking to buy a little solar pump to bring this project to life and swiftly found I could spend very little to a lot with no idea what I need? This video has been a great help. Just three questions (appreciating this video is a year old), what sized plastic pipe did you use to connect to the pump? Would that fountain pump be good enough to push water about 2-3 meters up a small slope? and lastly What is the black soft mesh you have over the submerged pump?
There is no way this pump will be good enough for a stream of any sort as it will only pump up (vertically) to around 50cm.
The pipe which fits the pump is 10mm internal diameter and the black mesh could be the coarse foam?

If you're looking to build a stream then I'd say go for a mains powered pump which will allow the system to run 24/7

Timer gets amazing results.
Certain Veggies grow better
Than others like yellow, Zucchini Squash, Cucumbers
and Tomatoes go crazy.
I've found that anything which produces fruit comprised mainly of water or has fleshy leaves will do will in hydroponics systems but I've not had much luck with woody herbs so far. They always seem to do best in the garden.
Hi Pondguru (not sure what your name is). I hope you can help me/us? We retired to Thailand and had a koi pond built. We made a filter for it as you directed. Our dilemma is brown water. We started using village water( from a giant man made pond). The water is brown. We added our rain water but that didn't seem to make a difference. Can you tell us what to do to get clear water? The filter pump seems fine and we also threw in bagged charcoal. Thanks in advance.
It sounds like it could be clay could be clouding it so the pond could require a bigger filter with finer pads to catch it.
The only issue I see with this in Summer....That 4inch waste pipe with water in will get to boiling temperatures. This hot water does not want to get to your plants.
That's a fair point although the pipe will be shaded for the most part by the plants I'm putting in there (tumbling tomatoes) and the reservoir is a decent size (and is regularly refilled with cold water).
I reckon it would be too warm for lettuce but the tomatoes should be fine.
You're right though, Ideally the pipe should have been white but that would look awful in the garden, lol
So what happens after the battery dies at night?
The pump shuts down but that's OK since the pipe in which the plants have their roots always has water in it and there is no sun to overheat the roots. Ideally I'd have used a white pipe for this system since the black pipe does get warm in the sun.
Does it work in winter?
It worked in the rain, snow (as long as the panel was clear), frost and any conditions as long as it is light - as the panel is good quality it doesn't need direct sunlight to work. Even dull days will see it pumping no problem.
Any small future projects I do will use this panel and pump as it's so much better than the previous one I was using which had a tiny panel which only worked in direct bright sunlight. I suppose that's the difference between a £10 system or a £30 system but I'd much rather spend the £30 to have it working all day every day.

That was the disappointing thing with the smaller panel and pumps I was running but that's not a problem with this one - it runs all day even when it is raining as long as it is light.
