  • As promised this is a video showing how the solar powered pond filter is made and the parts list can be found below.
    Solar powered water pump (Ebay): ebay.us/U7ofCD
    Solar powered water pump (Amazon): geni.us/M22pjdB
    Better version of the Solar Pump on Amazon: geni.us/jdKjbr
    The pump is the 200 lph / 1.5W version.
    Foams, Biogravel and mesh bags: www.filterpro.co.uk
    I used 1.5kg Biogravel split between 2 mesh bags.
    Foams and fine pad would be a set of coarse, medium and fine if bought from FilterPro (Foams page) but they're available all over the internet and from any good pond supplies shop.
    4" drainage pipe (any pipe of similar diameter will do)
    Decent alternative media would be either the 25mm Alfagrog: geni.us/kTwG
    or Eheim Substrat Pro: geni.us/98euQaB as the Alfagrog works very well in muck and the Substrat Pro is as close as possible to Biogravel.
    For a normal wildlife pond it will be fine to have the filter on the bottom of the pond, outlet pointed up, but I used steel 'S' hooks and paracord to suspend the filter about 6" up from the bottom of the container I use.
    The water coming into there is from my pond filters and it contains lots of sediment which settles on the bottom

    Just made and fitted mine in my little garden pond, the fishless one anyway. Cheers chap!
    Just to note, the pump from Amazon doesn't have a connection socket to the solar panel, it's all one cable from pump to panel. Not an issue for me here, but thought I'd mention it if it's a necessity for someone else.

      The design of the pumps seems to change slightly so that's no surprise. I bought the first one I have from Amazon but since have been getting them from Ebay - I've now got 4, lol
      I'm glad you've given it a go - nice one.

      (my other channel) Having a small solar powered pump in a water feature / small pond can only do good. If we get any sun this week I'm intending to set up a simple solar powered 'ebb and flow' hydroponics system over the water container in this video. I've got all the gear but no sun.
      Best of luck with your pond.

      (my other channel) The newer solar powered pumps are much better and I show that on the Thousand Yard Stare channel. They have a proper sized 10w panel which works even on dark days and there is also a battery back-up under the panel. Even through the Winter the new pumps and panel worked from sun up to just after sun down so it's a way better system than the solar pump shown in this video. At the time of posting they were around £30 for the pump and panel but definitely worth it. I bought 2 of them and wouldn't change back to the cheaper system.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  2 роки тому +2

      I don't see why not as even in conditions which aren't sunny the pump still 'pulses' water out and therefore draws some water into the filter to keep it working. It's raining here this morning and the pump is pulsing water out which is very surprising.
      The only downside is that it shifts nothing on a night.
      You can get systems with bigger panels, battery back up and the pump but unfortunately the pumps are scaled up with the system so they use way more power than this little one. Those larger pumps only tend to run for a few hours at night even when the battery has been fully charged during the day so it's the same problem of getting the pump to run at night.

    Hey Richard , the wave of the new content is so Awesome and each new one feels like a loose slot machine 🎰 I was wondering if this filter could be scaled down for a standard sized aquarium with a heater inside ? Something is telling me I might have seen such a DIY combo , but it would have been years ago 🤔 Thanks again and hope you are finishing up that 1 thing since you have the other thing , then those things are ...,. Just kidding . You stay busy but the relaxing &:rewarding is important too. 💙💚😎

      I'm working on a filter now for emergency use that can be powered by solar pump, usb pump or air but still pulling all the gear together for that one. It won't have a heater in as that consumes way more power that is usually available in a power grid failure situation unless you have a back up plan for more power (battery power station, generator etc.)
      With regard to the extra videos I've been getting up shortly after sunrise each day for weeks now so it's enabled me to get through all the work and have some time to make videos - there's still a very long list of videos I want to make.

    Hi Pondguru (not sure what your name is). I hope you can help me/us? We retired to Thailand and had a koi pond built. We made a filter for it as you directed. Our dilemma is brown water. We started using village water( from a giant man made pond). The water is brown. We added our rain water but that didn't seem to make a difference. Can you tell us what to do to get clear water? The filter pump seems fine and we also threw in bagged charcoal. Thanks in advance.

    Thank you for your help. I have a question. You use a pump right? Doesn't it pump out air? So how is the water drawn into the filter? Sorry if I seem a bit dense in this endeavor.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  Рік тому

      Water is drawn in through each end of the pipe through the foams. The pump moves water from inside the pipe then the water is replaced by whatever is drawn into the sides of the filter (ends of pipe). Air escapes from the filter as it is placed under water.

    • @selftaopath
