[For basketball] If you can move, you really only need a 50mm 1.8 prime, if you can't move then a zoom is ideal with another cam on a wider Prime.
A setup I've used before when shooting for a university
    NIKON D300s 70-200 F2.8
    Canon R10 with either a 28 f2.8 or 50 f1.8 prime

It was easy to find decent shots when I first started because I grew up on basketball and was just recapturing moments I've seen before. My only issue is that my technique sucked so I don't have many of those photos.
The best places for photos to sit are on the sideline around the 3-point break to the corner. The baseline about a quarter of the way in (seated) and next to the stanchion while seated with a lenser as wide and fast as possible. Also experiment if the venue is large enough, I've gone up 10 or 15 rows opposite the benches. If you capture an electric play, you'll get the audience in as well.
I normally don't comment because I'm fairly new to the act photography, but I love basketball and felt knowledgable on this one.

Appreciate your feedback, great tips and tricks. I know that photographing sports can be tricky as every sport requires its own approach and positions and know when and what to expect.

I missed you brother, Haven't seen you publish in a while. Hope all is well. I know things can get crazy. I took 1 month off youtube and it was the best thing in a while. I havent done much sports but I know my portrait photography would kick in and I would probably pull the player off the court and start posing them instead of capturing the game. thanks for your insights on sports photography. take care. nice shots btw.

Yes, took a short break as well. Working on videos, exploring and learning other genres of photography.

For indoor basketball I use a 70-180 f2.8. I get your speed argument but I like the zoom to get in tight, and for me at 1.8 the DOF is too shallow; more DOF also helps if you just miss focus a little. I shoot RAW and process out noise in Lightroom. I can’t always stand on the end line because the gyms are small and you get in the way. Also, I like to get shots from varying heights, including the top bleachers…carefully standing. If we are crammed in to a small gym I use a 24-120 f4. Thank you for your perspectives.

Thanks. I totally get the zoom lens approach. I have a few shoots with 70-200 2.8 that are good. I’m just finding that with 1.8 lenses I get great shots much more frequently. But I do agree that at the end of the day all shots are needed wide and close ups. Keep shooting my friend. Enjoy your craft.

    Less distortion
    Faster Apertures, mostly
Crop in edit vs Zoom in game

Always bring a 1.8 or 2.0 prime along with 70-200 2.8 just in case those lights are down or next thing you know is you shoot at 8000-12000 iso in jpeg lol

Yes, it’s easy to slide into that high range of ISO with low lit sports arenas.
