    Upgraded my RAM and SSD today. Your videos were very helpful. The SSD caused me some trouble, I tried using a Time Machine backup to the SSD but that didn’t work. I somehow managed to restore the HDD to the SSD and that worked. Other than that, the RAM install was super quick. My laptop is moving so so quickly now! I’m so amazed at these small changes making a huge difference to my 2012 MacBook Pro.

    This is a very clear and to the point video. I especially liked your method of putting the screws back in. Turning the screws backward until you hear a click is something I learned 60 years ago when I was working as a radio repair technician. We had problems with screws in aluminum and plastics when they had to be repeatedly unscrewed and re screwed and the threads became striped if you did not hit the right thread. The same actually applies to all small screws, if you don't find the right thread, you'll end up in trouble. I often wonder if technicians are taught this simple technique or if each individual has to just find this out for himself.

    • @Rickmakes
      @Rickmakes  2 роки тому +1

      I found it out for myself but I did deal with cross threaded lug nuts occasionally when I was an auto technician so I already had an aversion to cross threading. As annoying as cross threading is when a person uses the wrong size socket or screwdriver and screws up the fastener.

      go on and do it, just upgraded mine from 4gb to 16gb and it has been running like a dream, none of the previous problems whatsoever. More RAM solved my problems and I don't have need of an SSD given that most of what I do is just multitasking. But one thing you have to be prepared for is your Mac starting to heat up more often.

    • @Rickmakes
      @Rickmakes  2 роки тому +1

      If the screws are stripped, you could google "rubber band stripped screw" to see a tip for removing them. If they aren't stripped yet, I would make sure you are using a properly fitting screwdriver. Then make sure you are exerting force inline with the screw. Put a fair amount of force down as you are turning. Needless to say, you need to be careful so you don't slip and injure yourself or damage the computer.

    I have a macbook pro mid 2012, 4GB ram 1600MHz. I want to upgrade to a Kingstown 8GB DDR3 or 16GB. Which is better? Some people say that 16GB will not work fully properly, the processor can heat more. On the other hand, 8GB is cheaper and processor can run more efficiently. It we compare both performance, 8GB and 16GB in a such old Macbook doenst change a lot. And with the money i saved, i can replace my old HD to a SSD. What experts thinks about this? Cheers!

    Rick, for home schooling for remote learning, is 4 to 8 GB sufficient or is 16 recommended? Thanks

    • @Rickmakes
      @Rickmakes  3 роки тому +1

      Remote learning typically just uses a web browser. As such, you can probably get by with 4GB but I would keep other applications closed. If you need to switch between applications frequently, an upgrade to 8 or 16GB can be advantageous.

      RAM is most useful if you are switching back and forth between applications frequently. If you are usually doing one thing at a time, it is not as important.

      Yes. Apple states the max is 8GB but it works with 16GB. I have been running it that way for around nine years with no problems.

Without 5G for me yet, and given that the microprocessor itself is not upgradeable (correct?), what can I do to speed up my machine (pretty much identical to this one) to stream current live video without problems, and downloading websites with a great deal of data? Will anything make a difference with 4G?

    • @Rickmakes

      The Macbook Pro supports dual channel mode so it is going to give you a speed boost if you install RAM in matching pairs. That being said, it is probably better to have more RAM via an unmatched pair than to have less RAM but a matched pair.

    For RAM at Apple support
    it says max memory 8gb Is this true?

  • @Limian0

    What about performance now? Big differences?

    • @Rickmakes
      @Rickmakes  3 роки тому +1

      Having 16GB of RAM is advantageous if you run multiple applications at once. For instance, if you are editing a photo in Photoshop, then you switch to a web browser to look something up. After that you start composing an email. Having more RAM allows your computer to switch between applications more quickly and can help them run smoothly. I prefer to max out RAM so I know it is running as optimal as possible. If the computer is just being used for web browsing and not much else, a RAM upgrade isn't as likely to make as big of a difference. My parents have this same computer and I upgraded them to 8GB as they aren't really power users.

    What’s with the screen ratio!?

    • @Rickmakes
      @Rickmakes  3 роки тому

      I tend to do screen recordings at 720p (16:9). This makes everything larger and easier to read. The Macbook's native resolution isn't far off from 720p but I change it to keep things uniform.
