How to create fluffy grunge? Junk journal pages from 2 idea-ology fabric journals dyed with sprays

- In this video, I want to show you how I created the pages for my fluffy Halloween grunge journal, which I designed for Tim Holtz's idea-ology Halloween 2023 release. I'll walk you through step by step, demonstrating how I took apart two idea-ology fabric journals, stitched them back together, and then dyed them using distress oxide sprays and distress spray stains.

Love your idea of using a hair straightener for ironing! So much smaller & easier to handle than a regular sized iron. This journal is amazing! Can't wait to watch the rest of the videos on how you made it!
I use a hair straightener that I thrifted to iron ribbons.
You are so creative with words, I love that. “Threads are hugging each other” (14:11) 😊. “This journal is talking to me, it’s moving”… (18:50). I stopped using my straightening iron long ago and it was just sitting there in my bathroom storage unit. This video gave me the idea to move it into my craft instruments station and start using it. Thanks a lot for that tip!
Very exciting. Seam rippers are less than $1 and last forever. They have blunt tips and when I am fraying fabric I do it while watching television. No need to pay attention to sharp edges. The ones that come with sewing machines are tiny. Ordinary ones are about 6" long, easier to handle. I machine wash any fabric that I am going to dye or paint to remove any manufacturers finishes. These first steps seem fairly easy, but will take a long time. Can't wait to start.
A little prep goes a long way with fabric
This is so cool!!! For those who don't have access to the TH fabric, you could try a drop cloth (for painting) from the hardware store. First, you have to wash and dry it. I've used it for curtains, pillows, piping for pillows and cushions, etc. You won't believe how good it looks after washing (kinda like linen). I've also used it for covers of journals and mini books. Don't know how it would respond to inks.
I have thought this every time I see these little journals in the store. Customize your own. 😊
I bought duck cloth at Hobby Lobby. Actually found two remnants (75% off). I washed and dried it to get rid of any sizing. Just spent HOURS fringing the edges. @@SaltLifeGypsy68
Those drop cloths can be a bit pricey but it is good sturdy material....
That was fascinating, watching the canvas curling up as you were spraying the paint……..🤔🤔🤔🤔
I love this video! Watching your process was so helpful. I was so happy for you when I watched Tim Holtz flip through your makes during his video. You could see how amazed he was with your creativity. Congratulations to you for that and thanks for your detailed process and tutorial on your creation.
Just received o e of these journals. Think I’ll go to the fabric store and get more of this fabric and create pages. Love the grunge effect of your journal, and this is what I was thinking for me. Looking forward to seeing how you decorate yours. I have some halloweeny stuff in my stash, as my younger daughter loves decorating for Halloween. I may also just mess around and make an eclectic journal following some kind of general theme. Enjoy your weekend, Luise.
You are a great inspiration to me. I am greatfull to have come to know your you tube channel. Not only for junk journals but as a unique artist in many mediums. Hugs to you Luise!!!!
It called a seam ripper.
The sewing tool I use the most.
Hello Luise. You have a great sense of humor. It is a pleasure to listen to you. I can't wait to see how you attach your signatures. What a great beginning to a journal. Thank you for sharing.
I love this! Your work is so inspiring to me. Thank you for sharing your creativity with us! By the way, the English word for the tool to open up sewn areas is called a seam ripper here in the USA. ❤
This is so exciting watching these videos on this journal. I thoroughly enjoy all you create.
Luise, there are creative people, and then there are people such as yourself. You are an originator, a visionary, a true master of art. ❤
seam ripper! Thank you for this inspiration! I have a bunch of canvas that I can make these signatures on my own! I love the idea of staying the color on as a base.
I love anything Halloween ! This technique is fascinating to me.

Omg I don't know why I never thought of it before?!?!!? Using a hair straightener is ingenious! Cause I never iron my fabrics and such because I don't want to drag out the iron the board etc. But I use My hair straightener everyday!!!
You are so imaginative, creative and inspiring... totally beyond words. I am in awe watching you grunge up the edges of those pages, and the coloring of them... WOW!!! I love what @TubeYouLena said below... your terminology makes my artsy heart happy. I've never heard of a straightening iron before, but one may be in my future. Really, Luise, these pages are truly amazing, and thank you for sharing their coming together with us.
As usual I love it❤.
Great video! I like the idea of deconstructing the Tim Holtz fabric journals to make your own.
Such a fun journey here.. some new ideas to try across the journal spectrum. New to journal stuff in the last year.. this fabric thing is fascinating! I love multi media and cross over textures…
Thank you!!

Oh my gosh I love watching you grunge the fabric pages! The frayed edges look so good all grunged and the curling on some look great! Good combination of ink color. I'm anxious to try this!

I just love hearing you explain the steps. You are so upbeat and cheerful! And i love the german lilt in your voice. Makes me so happy!
I agree. I really love to just hear you. I'm really tempted to listen to the videos in German after I watch them in English.
Thank you for sharing 💕🙏🏼🌷
I love the hair iron tip! The pages look awesome!
Luisa, how many signatures did you end up using. I tried to keep track rewatching the flip through. Was it three? That would be 12 pages plus the covers. It was so much work fringing the edges that I don't want to make more than I need. Thanks.
Yes, there are 12 pages in total
I hope your going to show how to bind the signatures.
Hi Luise, It has been incredibly bad weather in Tyrol, I hope you weathered it well!

Your process is amazing and so carefully thought out as always. I can’t wait to see your next steps. Thanks. 🤗🇨🇦🤗
Very fun!❤
Thank you for sharing your process and experience. It is wonderful watching your journal come to life and I am excited to see what comes next.
Love it
Oh! A seam ripper is probably what you’re thinking of.
They are easier to use than scissors mainly because they come with a slim poky end that slips under a stitch pretty well. Exception would be embroidery scissors or any other small scissors that are rather skinny.
I do find it easier to sharpen scissors than to sharpen a seam ripper.
I love it! Super inspired by everything you do ... really great to see how you got this journal started. I really want to try these techniques!!!
Wauw!!! 🤩🤩🤩
Will there be a second video on this process?
I have some more videos about this journal coming soon
So beautiful love the colors also thank you for the tips on doing the edges have a groovy day
Thank you, Luise for showing us this. I would love to see the rest of it decorated.
